I just bought some banana chips for myself…and was thinking that maybe banana chips would maybe make a nice snack for the bunny to crunch on as well.

Has anyone given banana chips to their bunnies? Of course, I’d only be giving him a super small hunk. They have coconut oil in them, is that alright for a bun to have?

I give them to mine all the time, but I usually dry them myself. Check the label and see the sugar content. Usually the “people” ones have more sugar.

I don’t know about the coconut oil. Generally speaking, dried hard banana chips are going to be rather high in sugar – itsy bit of a plain dried banana chip should be okay as an occasional treat, but you don’t want to offer it as a regular treat. A bit of fresh banana is high in sugar but at least it’s better because of the water content.

Again, as far as the coconut oil, I don’t know, I’ll have to check on that if someone else doesn’t know the answer.

EDITED TO ADD INFO ABOUT COCONUT OIL:  Okay – with a quickie google search, I just found  that coconut oil is just much too high in fat to be recommended (now this is just with a little quickie search so it’s not like I’ve done a major research on this or anything)

I also found an response from Dana Krempels regarding someone putting coconut oil as an ointment,   and she was worried about the bunny licking it off – here the part of Dana’s response regarding the oil:

“There are few oils as unhealthy as coconut oil.  It’s loaded with saturated fats, and I would *never* put it on a bunny where it could be licked off.  Rabbits are strict herbivores that should get minimal fat in the diet.  Coconut oil is a terrible choice for rabbits for any reason.”

I give Banana chips but like-one at a time. They don’t really like them. Mine are some sort of organic things with nothing but the fruit-no oil on them.

I’d say-eat the banana chips yourself this time and see if you can find some plain ones next time
