I am getting my new flemmies on Saturday and the area that I have for them is 6’x7.5′ with an additional 4’x6′ space beyond that (it’s hard to explain) and a friend of mine recommended getting some indoor/outdoor carpet to put down.  The area is already carpeted and I’m trying to figure out if an additional layer of carpet is really necessary or not.

        Any input would be appreciated.

We have a large area rug down for our buns in their main area (where their litter pans/food dishes/houses are). I prefer it this way because if they chew or dig on the rug then they are not destroying the main carpet. Plus if they have an accident outside of their litter pans, or make a mess eating their veggies then it’s just on the rug, which is easier to clean.

I personally don’t feel that indoor/outdoor carpet is necessary, ours is just a nice large area rug, that doesn’t look bad or clash with the decor Also, we managed to find it at one of our local dollar stores (!?) for only $15 and it is 6′ x7′. Good deal.

I strongly recommend an additional rug down over your carpeting. It’s an insurance policy. Even if your buns are PERFECTLY littertrained and NEVER chew, there are other things that can happen. A missed cecal can get ground into the carpet. Wet veggies can fall from the dish and get green smears on the carpet. One day I did not tighten the water bottle cap enough and the ENTIRE bottle drained all over the litterbox and floor. Fur will get into the carpet just from the buns walking around and laying down. A littertrained bun can still have accidents and pee over the side of the box, or if a bun is sick they may stop using the box. Not all buns chew carpet, but some do dig it up and that can be just as destructive.

Definitely get an additional carpet. I’d make sure it is somewhat soft tho b/c the buns are going to have a lot of weight. You can also do pieces of fleece blanket or pet beds to give more soft places to relax.

I bought on of those nice fleecy soft pet beds…and Chubs never once layed in it! lol He prefers to sleep in his box house on the regular carpet. I even put it in the box house and then he slept next to it…Haha. Gotta figure out what works for your buns!

Oh and then when we brought new bunny home, I thought, well maybe he will like it! And it must have smelled like Chubs from the times I put him in it to see if he’d warm up, and so new bunny peed all over it…haha. They showed me…They both prefer the simpler floor beds!

I agree with Beka like two hundred percent. Even perfect bunnies can ruin your carpet The other carpet layer is a great idea!

I think it is good to have a second carpet over the first for chewing and destruction reasons.
I use a outdoor rug, it works well because it is hard for the bunnies to chew on so it is not as “fun” to chew on. It is a bit hard and not very cushy but I have a softer rug running along the side of the wall. I find that for my bunnies things are only in danger of being chewed if they are blocking the bunnies from getting somewhere, (rug on edge of their pen) So I covered those places with tiles. Somehow my bunnies only chew on things that they are supposed to, strange, I am used to having bad animals Thistle has taken to chewing the grass mats, which is kinda annoying because that means I will have to buy more at some point, but its fine. Sorry about talking randomly about my bunnies, ive been feeling a bit down because all my friends get bored when I talk about my buns….

Well, we certainly don’t mind if you talk about your bunnies

I completely agree with Kokaneeandkahlua! Even good buns have their bad days and its always nice to have them on something that you can clean when they do have accidents!
