I had sent the hubby to the store for crinkle cut carrots (I call them carrot chips…you usually see them in the organic produce aisle) and he brought home instead, actual carrot (and sweet potato) chips!

They are organic, and I tasted them, they’re actually delicious. But they are preapred with canola and safflower oils. I would guess that, just like real potato chips, they are probably NOT healthy snacks for bunnies?

I am wondering though, if I had one of those fruit drying machines, could I dry things like carrots or sweet potato or other fruits myself and make healthier snacks for my bunnies than the stuff you find at the store?  If so, what woudl be the best items to try first? And what would be the best way to reduce the sugar content of these items? Suggestions?

If it were me, I would just give them fresh carrot. I think fresh just tastes well, fresher and they are more fragrant.

I think mrmac made some banana chips this weekend too that she posted about in the lounge.

Are those chips the Terra Chips? Those are SO GOOD! I wouldn’t feed those either to my rabbits but I’d eat them up myself. I don’t even think my rabbits would eat them if I offered them.

I love Terra Chips- pretty much all flavors!

When it comes to drying fruit there really is no way to reduce the sugar content- if anything drying concentrates the sugar content since the same amount of dehydrated carrot is smaller than a fresh carrot.

Short of juicing and pressing carrots or apples and using the “pomace” to make treats- I don’t think a dehydrator is an option to make low sugar treats.

I have dried some fruits and veggies for my parrots, bunnies and myself. The bunnies get such a little amount of anything I can dry it is not worth it to do it just for them.

Terra chips… yum, we don’t buy them too often because they are so addicting! I am not much of a chip person, I prefer sweet things, but terra chips… *drool*
I think its better to feed bunnies not dried out things because they get more that is less calories because the water in a not dehydrated food has no calories.

Hey Mimz!!!! Remember me??? My 2 cents here on the subject: While dried goodies are really yummy, I give my two some dried fruit once in a while, the sugars are really concentrated and so if dried, should only be offered as a treat. You are abosolutely 100% right that the fried terra chips should definately not be given to your bunnies.
