My Bonnie Lee has found a new game she is enjoying.   She is jumping up on my sofa table.  First she jumps on my sofa, then on the back of the sofa, then onto the sofa table which is just behind my sofa.   I have removed everything from the sofa table and she still keeps returning.   This is not a good place for her to be.  She may fall.  Bonnie Lee is deaf … so I can not teach her “No no”.      I thought about using a water bottle & spray her but I thought this might scare her to the point she might run and fall off the table.   I got a rolled up newspaper and “gently swat” it at her.    In doing this, I was close to her and would catch her if she fell … but she did run for the sofa and jumped over the sofa and back to the floor … but once I left the room, she jumped back on the sofa table.  She has continued to do this on and off for a couple of weeks now.   Any suggestions?

Also note, Bonnie is an excellent house rabbit.   She stays out of her cage all day & has free range of our home (I am home all day).  She does not bother anything.  She does not chew on furniture.  She has excellent litter box habits.   She does not jump on other furniture… just on the sofa every once in awhile.    I lock her in her cage during the night for safety reasons.

Is the sofa table between the sofa and the wall or is there nothing on the other side? The only thing I can really think is that you either restrict her access to the couch all together by blocking the sofa with an xpen, or remove the sofa table. But then she could still hop to the back of the sofa and fall off of there… Is the table very slippery, is that what you’re worried about? You could lay a blanket or towel on it for some traction. If it’s a very high table, I wouldn’t think she’d try to jump off, but I’ve seen buns do stranger things. You could make a step that she could hop down from the table.

So I’m probably no help at all. She could fall off the table, but honestly, there are many things she could fall off of. Does she have a history of losing her balance and falling? Is there something else that concerns you about this?

I find if I load up table tops where I don’t want them to go it helps. At least from the ground level when they assess it, it looks too hard to get on. Not sure if it’d help though if Bonnie Lee is getting on it from the sofa.

Maybe try a diversion – create a more attractive option for her. If she is enjoying climbing up high, give her a series of cardboard boxes to jump up onto. My girl loved this when I had one set up near the window. She could jump up on it, then onto the window sill.

You could temporarily put a carpet runner on it- the kind with the nubs to hold it in place.  Cut a piece to fit the table- and put it on it nub side up- it should be unpleasant on her feet.  To keep the plastic runner from sliding off you can put some of the shelf liner that is rubbery/foamy between it.  The shelf liner provides traction and help the plastic to stick.

We use shelf liner at work to keep x-ray cassettes in place on the slick table when we are x-raying small pets.

You could also throw a plastic sheet, like a shower curtain liner, across the couch to make it less appealing as the first step. If she doesn’t get on the couch, she doesn’t get on the table.
