I was doing one of my regular cage/condo cleanups and noticed that their willow tunnel has become the place to poop.  There was a mountain of poop inside.  I don’t usually dig around in their tunnel and tend to just vacuum the tops & sides.  I actually have the tunnel zip tied to their cage b/c it’s a ramp to a different part of their cage.  I don’t know how long this has been going on.  I cleaned it out, returned it and within the next hour it was pooped up again.  I have since taken it out of their condo—-which makes Jessica VERY MAD!

Why do you think this happened and how can I change  this?

I think the only way you can change it is to take it out. I’m sure it does make Jessica mad because she got away with pooping in there. I don’t know why it happened – I can only guess just being lazy – it’s dark in here, I’m comfortable and I’m not moving even if I need to poop.

Sounds like she thought it was a round litter pan. Does she use her litter box only now?
I’m sure Sarita’s right. The only other thing I could think of to do is wash down the tunnel in vinegar so it’s not as pleasant to hang out in, without the smell of poop. She’ll probably poop it up again, though.

They both have been litterbox only bunnies for some time now.  There are occasional pee spots in areas that I assumed where some form of marking (i.e. near the hay bin, near Leo’s favorite hidey spot).  I suspect that Leo is the pee’er, maybe just b/c he’s male.  So I’m not sure who the pooper is????  I suspect that Leo does get lazy at times.  I did a vinegar/water spray & wipe.  I’m thinking I will do a major spraying w/ the vinegar/water and just let air dry.  We’ve kept it outside of the condo since the poopy discovery.  Now it sits in front of their condo on the living room floor.  Jessi comes out to run through it in the evening/night.

So if they start to potty in bad places are you just resolved to accept it?

No, no noooooo. I am not resolved to accept it – Coco and Jackson are caged at night because of their joint decisions to pee and poop everywhere during the night.

Coco was always free roam – until Jackson. Now SHE is the pee’er – and he poops to cover up her pee – so I know if One starts, the other will kick in their part

They have been very very good since I started caging them at night – when Coco does pee, I clean it as soon as I can. I did have to take away one grass basket that Coco peed in because I couldn’t get it clean enough and It wasn’t worth the battle.

But I have to say it IS really tiring to keep on them this tightly – but there really isn’t any option for me – as they are free roam for the rest of the day and I want them to be, so we all have endure the litter training smackdown

I don’t know if you are resolved to accept this but I do think in order to make a change you must be on top of their behavior. Obviously you did not know they had been doing this so they accepted this was okay to do. So only if you can catch behavior that you feel is unacceptable can you train them. I think now it’s become an accepted routine so now it’s up to you to try to change the routine. Are you willing to do that? If not, then you just have to take the tunnel out. I guess it’s like potty training any baby (which I have never personally done) but I do know it takes persistence and routine with those that are hard to train.

I have found with my bunnies that once they get in the “habit” of pooping somewhere, it is very hard to stop them from doing so. I think that it may be because the area they are pooping in starts to smell like their litter box, so they just think its another “poop area.” The way that I have had the best luck to prevent this from happening is by making sure that anything I put in their areas doesn’t have a bottom to it, e.g., I use the tent tunnels, or cut the bottom of the cardboard boxes out. This means that I can keep the floor of the cage very clean with the weekly cleaning I do, and it keeps them from creating a new “poop area.” Maybe you could consider cutting the tunnel in half so that it they can’t poop or pee on the willow where it is impossible to get completely clean?

I wouldn’t accept it-especially when they are young (ie. not ten years old!) and easier to train. I’d keep the tunnel out and then in maybe a few weeks try it again-if they continue pooping in it-then it’s out

I totally agree with removing the tunnel!  I found the easiest way to get through the potty training was to remove as many toys as possible from the litter area.  While litter training sometimes things that are close to the box tend to get attached/scented in to the potty area, and then if they are moved, they take the area with them.

We also have a texture issue.  My rabbits room is black fabric on one wall, which he loves to go behind and snuggle at night. It’s bedsheet weight fabric and I’ve found a few spots where he’s left surprises in the same type of fabric.  Repetition was the key here, and after about 10 days we’ve got it nearly solved!  *knock on wood*

UPDATE:  I took out the tunnel and no poops since its been out.  However some bunny started to potty in another corner of an upper shelf.  The shelf that the tunnel was on.   I cleaned it and have now blocked access to it w/ a big cardboard wall.  Today they’ve started to potty on the next shelf down in the far corner.  Similar to the location on the upper shelf.  DH says we should block access there too.  That would mean that they can only use the potty floor or the food shelf.  Is this the way to go to retrain them?

I too had the problem of potty bunnies when out running around the house at night.  I began locking them up at night to restrict their access.  I believe that went on for about 9-12 mos. and then we started to slowly give them access back.  They are now good bunnies at night.  We haven’t had any major accidents b/s occassional poops…Knock on wood

If it were me and my bunnies (and they challenge me similarly at times) I would at this point add a second litter box in the area they chose to potty. They might just want an extra potty spot.

The title of this posts sounds like a movie title.   Hey anyone want to go see Poop Mountain?

Yeah it is playing at  skunklionshow’s house.

Well we may have the sequal in “Escape from Poop Mountain,” or “Revenge of Poop Mountain.”

So I tried blocking off the poop/pee areas.  Each time they just found another close to it spot.  I took Petzel’s advice and added the 3rd litterbox near where I have found the poops & pee.  That worked well, but then they were also using the other shelf.  I just added a 4th box to that shelf.  Today No One has used the 4th box.  I think Jessica is offended by the whole litterboxes everywhere intervention.  I think I’ll leave #4 in for another week and assess again.  Too bad I don’t own stock in litterboxes!

Petzel:  You seriously gave me a heart attack.  Your profile pic freaked me the heck out.  I thought it was a real rabbit.  Please tell me that’s art?  It’s kind of a scary carical cat rabbit????

a heart attack? I am beginning to see why Jerseygirl hesitated to use the hare-do for her signature. She must have had a sense a sanity in the moment. — Skunklion, I am so sorry if my “art” offended you, made you need medical assistance !!!  I liked this thing so much… it did remind me of my rabbit Mops a little, only enhanced!

Please read where I got it from to change your opinion about me you possibly now have (Petzy=totally sick )

OK, 4 litterboxes is too many. I would assume that the removal of their poop tunnel has really ticked them off. I woud diligently clean up the any stray droppings from the shelves. They might just be off their routines as one routne was pottying in the willow tunnel. — you could try just two litterboxes but have one of them be a covered, hut-type litterbox, like a pet carrier. If they loved the tunnel so much maybe you could convince them into liking a cozy litterhouse.

If you re-arrange their house, will they still go to the same areas? Or are they randomly picking spots?

Petzy:  Thanks for the clarification.  Since I’m knockin’ on the 40’s door, I can’t trust my eyes like I used to.  Since the avatars are so small….I have found that sometimes I see things that aren’t really there or I just misconstrue the image.  Boy that made me sound a little psycho!  This reminds me of an art story…..

My roommate during undergrad was an artist specifically a painter.  She often painted bones and bone structures.  So…..I was cleaning up our studio and doing some rearranging.  I picked up a big bucket w/ a towel on it and low & behold….it was broken down body tissues and fur.  I almost threw up.  It was totally a CSI gross out moment.  Turned out she found a piece of a furry animal on a hike and thought that it would be an awesome skull to use for her artwork.  She was getting everything off the bone.  She actually knew what she was doing as she came from the sticks in the first place.  Got to love art.

Anyway update on the poop.  They seem very happy w/ 3 litterboxes.  I have the fourth still in place and if it hasn’t been used by next weekend, it will leave.  I think they just wanted a potty box up on their top floor for that “Detrol moments.”  (FYI:  Detrol is a med for bladder control issues).
