› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Gracie’s not eating! **Update**
If anyone’s on right now, please help me out! Gracie ate this afternoon, she didn’t run around that much but they mostly sleep during the day. I heard some gurgling sounds coming from her stomach but thought she was just digesting her food. It’s almost 1am and I went to feed them around midnight. She looooves her food and is always excited about it but she didn’t seem interested in her lettuce. I tried to give her a piece but she refused. I thought maybe Sandy was distracting her so I put the cardboard between their cages….still nothing. As Archie was pigging out on the lettuce I tried giving her a raisin, she ate that but not as excited. I tried giving her pellets, nothing, I held out a papaya tablet and nothing! She LOVES those. I still here gurgling. I took her out of her cage and laid her on her back and massaged her stomach. I’m thinking maybe GI Statis?? Would that sound right? We did give her a butt bath yesterday and she licked herself most of the day so I also think maybe she has some hair in her or has gas.
I have to get to bed soon but will check in the next few min. for a responce, I know people are probably in bed by now but thought I’d try. I’ll see how she is in the morning and if she’s not eating I’ll call the vet since they’re open until noon tomorrow. I don’t want to wait since they’re not open on Sun. and I can’t afford to be going to an Emergencey Vet Clinc (wherever that may be).
Thanks guys!!
It sounds like a stasis type thing. I would just keep and eye on her, if she still isnt better then take her to the vet. She ate a raisin, so thats always a plus. Have you seen her drink or potty at all?
Has she been pooping?
Maybe, if you suspect gas you could give her a little simethicone. When my bunny’s had bad gas before, it worked very well in relieving it.
I would probably keep encouraging her to eat things and, as long as she doesn’t show signs of bad pain etc, see how she is in the morning…
Thanks guys for the quick responses!! It’s hard to tell with pooping since there are two in there and the liter wasn’t changed today. They have mostly been in their cage today, I should have noticed better. She did drink earlier today, I do know that since I was watching her drink. She did something 2 days ago I believe….she was sitting weird with her back legs, almost looking in discomfort and I was going to post something but she only did it twice and she was fine, hoping around and eating (maybe it was the start of GI), almost like she had to poop. There were cecals in the litter (I think from yesterday) but figured someone just forgot to eat it. God I feel like I haven’t paid enough attention to what was happening
I will check in on her again before I go to bed and let you guys know what’s going on in the morning.
Fluffy, what is simethicone exactly, do you get it at a regular store? I know we’ve fed my first rabbit Mineral Oil when he was having some pooping problems (I probably wasn’t suppose to do that…but didn’t know back then)
Simethicone is a drug used for relieving gas in infants and can be used for bunnies. You can get it at most drugstores – look for infant’s Gas-X or liquid simethicone.
How come she had a butt bath-is her bum wet/poopy? Definitely give semethicone-it can’t hurt. Just buy baby gas drops that contain it. Keep tummy massaging and watch. If poops completely stop or the bunny is grinding her teeth and huddled up-vet time. Keep us posted!
Hi Ski, I don’t know if you’ll check back in….. Try get her to have fluids – maybe a tiny bit of juice in water. Simethicone is the ingredient in gas relief meds. You can give infant formulas to rabbits. Mineral oil can/has been used for getting intestine content moving before – but if contents are already dry, the oil coats it and makes it harder for fluids to soften up the mass. It is probably better just to up the fiber and fluid intake.
If she ate and drank this afternoon, that’s good, she might be feeling a little uncomfortable right now. If she won’t eat in the morning though and it’s been 12 hrs – you should take her to the vet. Stasis can come on because of some other issue. i.e. if she has discomfort from something else, she may lose appetite, gut slows down because lack of intake. How is she behaving generally?
(((Gracie)))
edit: oops, we 3 answer same time. I find this article really helpful to have on hand. http://www.mybunny.org/info/gi_stasis.htm
Well, i know you must be sleeping now and you’ve been given some good advice – sounds like gas but it hard to know for sure of course, so we’ll be eager to hear the update. Sending healing vibes!
This is Ski’s husband posting.
I just woke up and fed them their pellets and she wouldn’t move from her corner on the second floor. I grabbed a handful of pellets and tried hand feeding her but she turned away. So I grabbed a raisin and she sniffed it for a moment and then turned away again. I noticed too she was sitting like she had the other day and there was a tiny poop behind her. It was much more tiny than what she usually produces. Unfortunately we weren’t able to get Simethicone or use any of your other suggestions due to the lateness of the night. I fear now if we waited to long. She last ate a raisin before Ski went to bed around 12:30 am and it’s now 7:00 am. Our vet opens in an hour and we’ll be taking her in ASAP.
Please keep us updated. Vibes to Gracie.
You’re probably not back from the vet yet, but please let us know how she is. You are doing the right thing, and getting to the vet this morning will get her under the proper care for the rest of the weekend.
You might want to locate a 24 hour drug store (my Walgreens up the street is one) for future reference. It’s good to know for both humans and furbabies. I know they sell simethicone. I had a false alarm of gas once with Sammy, so just bought it to have in the house for emergencies.

Hey guys, my husband filled me in. No vet yet, and actually we called Niles but the rabbit vet wasn’t in today! So we called the one by us (the one I didn’t care for…) and they were suppose to be open but we just got the answering machine >< So we called another one, they didn't deal with rabbits, we called the one next door to the one right around the corner and they didn't deal with rabbits but said to try next door. I said we just got their answering machine and she sounded confused and gave me a few other places that might deal with rabbits. We tried next door again and we finally got through (betting the other vet went over to inform them they forgot to turn the answering machine off). The earliest we can get in is 10am. I really don't care for that vet (if we're seeing the same guy, most likely) but they're the closest (and probably only other) vet that deals with rabbits. Why do they have to consider them exotic, geez! Still little poops and she wouldn't take anything I gave her. Husband said her stomach was really loud this morning too. We'll go out and get that medicine for the future! But it was so late and husband was asleep and I was so tired I couldn't drive. So now we'll always keep that on hand just in case.
Any updates?
Sorry for the delay…we started out at the vet and ended up at the ER.
We took Gracie in and they gave her an iv for fluids. The dr. also gave her a shot of…I can’t remember the name but it started with an R. He gave us some meds called Metoclopramide and to disolve it in water and give it to her by syringe. Does that sound right?? I’m not up on rabbit medicine
I have to give it to her in a 1/2 hour.
So on to the ER part…I have no clue what happened, I get this way about once or so a year. They were putting the IV in Gracie and I started to feel a bit weak, then sick, then I got really hot. I knew then I had to sit down because next part is usually darkness and I always sit down during that part and then I’m fine. Well this time I sat in the chair and closed my eyes to calm down, I guess that’s when the darkness came and I just remember feeling like I was falling out of my chair and then feeling my glasses hit the floor (as I thought “oh no my glasses!!”) and feeling my head hit the floor. So yup, I fainted!
An ice pack, water, and a few embaressing moments later I was a bit better. We dropped Gracie off at the house and decided to go to the ER because you can never be too careful with hitting your head! We were there for 6 hours! They did an ekg, 4 tubes of blood, tested for low blood sugar, put an iv in my hand in case I felt like I was going to faint again (OWW!!!), hooked me up to some kind of monitor (those sticky things hurt so bad to get off!) and did a kat scan. The results…..nothing, I’m fine. Which is good but at the same time I wished I knew why that happens to me once a year. *sigh* So that was my “relaxing” Saturday
While I was in the ER I had my parents come over the house and feed them and when I talked to them my mom said that Gracie had eatten some lettuce!! When we got home she ate some more and had some pellets! There’s little poops all over so I think she’s getting better! I’m so happy!
Oh dear, I’m sorry you fainted. Your under alot of stress with this and I admit I cannot stomach some of the things they do in vet’s offices and doctors offices either so I understand why you fainted. Hugs to you.
Metroclopramide and reglan are the same drug – they are gut motility drugs so that sounds right. I know you can get Reglan/metroclopramide in a injectible and an oral form…never heard of a powder form in this but I have in cisapride which is another gut motility drug.
Did they give you any pain medication for her or give her a pain shot?
Fluids are good too.
Wow, glad you’re both feeling better.

It’s in a pill form but it just dissolves in water. She took it really well. They didn’t give her any pain meds or shot but she hasn’t looked in pain. She was a lot more lively once she got fluids… She’s in her spot again laying down, but hopefully she’ll get up and moving soon.
Wow, you’ve really been through a lot tonight. I’m glad you’re feeling better now.
At first I was thinking it sounded like you were having a hot flash. Which led me to wonder if they checked your hormones. Mine were terribly difficult at times and I went undiagnosed with Endometriosis for 25 years. It’s not common, but hormone related illness can have symptoms like that. I never passed out though. Just a thought.
Whatever it is, glad you and Gracie are both getting some care and comfort at home.
Sarita- for gut motility drugs Cisapride/Propulsid was taken off the market for humans making it near impossible to get thru regular drug companies- but an exotics specialist near me said that they are able to order it thru a compounding pharmacy. But Reglan/Metoclopramide is so widely available and obviously must be effective. My vet mentioned that Reglan and Cisapride works on different parts of the GI tract for motility. I know that she just had some compounded for a cat with Megacolon- which Cisapride should help where Reglan would not.
skibunny- Glad to hear that Gracie is doing better! and that she takes her meds well for you- that can be such a struggle. I love Gracie and Archie- they are such an adorable couple!
What a day! I’m glad to her Gracie is feeling better, and you’re ok too!
Oh Ski! What a night! Glad Gracie is getting better. Hope you can get to the bottom of the fainting episodes. Rest up!
Oh wow! I’m so sorry for what you had to go through! It looks like you are both feeling better now. What a treasure hunt for a vet! Your persistance though obviously has helped Gracie recover! The fluids and gut motility drug seemed to have done the trick so far, so that’s good. Hopefully it was enough to get things back on track permanently. . She may be resting now just because of the stress of it all. You get some rest too and give us updates when you have a chance.
Thanks guys!
A couple Tylenol and I’m feeling a lot better today, just a big knot in my head, at least it’s not black and blue
Gracie has been pooping everywhere haha! Last night my husband called me in and said he thinks he knows what was making her not go to the bathroom and pointed to this long thing of poop almost strung together with other poop….it looked like it would have been quite painful!
She’s getting back to her old self, I think she just likes sitting on the second floor because she can look down at Sandy and see what she’s up to hehe!
Yes, hopefully someone can get to the bottom of why that happens to me…I’ve had it since high school but have never actually gotten to the point where I faint, just almost black out and then I’m better….hmmm…
EDIT: I almost forgot…they gave us like 30 of those pills but the dr. never really said how long to keep giving it to her. She’s eating pretty good now, do I give her the whole bottle? I was going to ask the vet tomorrow to when I go to take Sandy to get her staples out (yay!!) (different vet)
wow. what a stress. i am relieved for you to see Gracie well again. and you, too.
well, one new thing came out of it: your husband posted! ![]()

He doesn’t post much but he sure does read them! He’s as bad as me, he’s always checking BB for new comments (and likes seeing everyone’s pics of their buns hehe!)
Everytime I get gut motility drugs, if it was just a one time sort of onset thing – not like an illness or post-surgery that can cause a continual slow-down for a while, then my vet has always said it is okay to stop when appetite and pooping are back to normal. Of course, you should call your vet and double check with him/her just in case your vet feels, in your bunny’s case, that you need to continue.
She’s doing much better now. We called the vet and he said as long as she’s gotten her appetite back and is back to normal we can stop giving her meds and just keep them on hand if it happens again.
Glad to hear that Gracie is feeling better!!
Petzy: your pic is creepy!!
Haha! Petzy… that picture totally reminds me of Donnie Darko!
Donnie: Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?
Frank: Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?
Lizzie, it’s from the other thread, JerseyG’s.
