Cost is always surprising when looking at stuff for rabbits. I literally was shocked calling for spay prices-and shocked as well that not all vets do it(they’re sold in petstores-so I *figured* all vets treated them, as they do dogs/cats! ~silly me)
Cost can really really range-I’ve heard of people paying as little as fifty dollars, but 250$ is about average.
I cannot overstate asking what’s included in the procedure when you phone around. My vet is costly but she has three techs with epinephrine pens ready for every surgery in case they crash, as well a heated blanket (rabbits can get hypo very easy in surgery) and continous monitoring of all vitals (not just machines but techs watching carefully)-then there is a tech one-on-one with my rabbit until they wake up AND eat. I think this is HUGELY important because one of the very very minute risks is them waking in ‘fits and starts’ and they can injure themselves if they freak out. I belong to a disabled rabbit mailing list and there are two bunnies on there who had that. Some vets just put them in a cage after surgery and then you come get them hours later.
Sooooo-point of me going on and on and on (Sorry!!
) is you might find a vet who’s very cheap-but doesn’t give pain meds or monitor after surgery. It’s personal how much we can afford, but it’s also a personal preference how much attention you want your bunny given when they are in for surgery. So ask lots and lots of questions-and make sure you feel comfortable with the level of care and the vet!
And->A vet who recommends fasting before surgery-hang up the phone and cross them off your list! Your rabbit should eat right up until the surgery
