Monkey seems to have developed a watery eye issue, her left eye is always teary,a nd has matted down the fur around it a bit. I’ve been keeping an eye on it, and it hasn’t bothered her yet, but as I don’t seem to have permission to touch her, I can’t get a close look. Was thinking of taking her to the vet, but wanted to get opinions first. Any thoughts? Should I be worried?
A watery eye could mean several things – how long has it been going on???? She could have simple gotten something in it that is irratating it or perhaps scratched it or it could be a clogged tear duct, just to name a couple of the more common bunny eye issues!!!! If it’s enough to concern you, then I would call the vet and at least talk to them over the phone. More than likely they will probably wnat to see her!!!
Yeah, it’s been a couple days now, I figured I’d call anyway in the morning just to see what my vet says. I’ll do that ![]()
Let us know what they say!!!! My Lola has issues on and off with clogged tear ducts, so I know how frustrating it can be!!!! I also am a vet tech for a veterinary ophthomologists – so I have the advantage of just sneaking her in when needed as well as a good discout!!!!!!
I had a rabbit with an elognated incisor root that caused his eye to water all the time. Keep us updated.
her appointment is for Thursday at 1, the soonest I could get her in without it being an emergency. So I’ll keep an eye on it til then.
Please keep us posted, but until then {{{{{{{{{{{{{{no more watery eye vibes}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Actually I didn’t even think about a tooth problem (what can I say, I was up in the middle of the night w/ insomnia and nothing better to do than sit on the computer!!!!!)
She seems to be eating fine, still doing binkies after peeing on the floor (love teenage buns! *eyeroll*) and dancing for her treats, so its not hurting her any, whatever it is.
Rucy had watery eyes due to two reasons – teeth issues and a blocked tear duct. Hers was more chronic though. This sounds like something that has just recently developed for Monkey right? Sounds like she’s doing just fine though until her appointment.
Does her nose look runny at all?
Let us know what the vet says. Hope whatever it is, is just an easy quick fix.
(Keeping fingers crossed)
her nose looks fine, and she doesn’t seem all that bothered by it. And she’s being a little piggie like usual, so her teeth don’t seem to be bugging her either. So it’s probably the tear duct thing. Or she’s an emo bunny. lol.
While it could be either, it does sound like blocked tear duct is most likely. The vet can tell that with an exam. Spockie had one, and we had a cream that I dabbed into the corner of his eye. It melted into the duct with the heat of his body and flowed to heal it. It worked pretty quickly. It was a recurring problem (maybe every 6 months over the years) but that cream worked really well so once I had it in the house he was fine in a jiffy.
Mine has a runny eye, and we think it’s due to irritation as he doesn’t really blink that eye (it’s cataracted and blind). There’s no infection or anything, and his buddy keeps it pretty clean for me-but a watery eye is definitely worth checking out as it could be major or minor or nothing but you never want to wait
Keep us posted on what the vet says!
Oh and a tip, sounds like he’s a bun who doesn’t like to be handled. What might work is putting him in a carrier and taking him for a car ride. That usually sets them up to be nervous and then they are easier to handle -you could ‘bunny burrito’ him after a car ride and likely get a good look ![]()
Well you will want to know why the tear duct is blocked as this is the result of many different things – dental, infection, inflammation and you definitely don’t want it to get chronic. The area around the eye can become inflamed and that can be painful.
Initially with my rabbit Bunbun the vet did a flush and it continued to run and then after some x-rays she determined that the duct was clogged due to the dental problem. I never could keep his poor eye area healthy. So if it doesn’t clear up you MAY need follow up visits to get more tests or x-rays. It really took a few vets to figure out his problem.
I’ve also heard of rabbits who have these problems because of a misshapen eyelid or some other abnormality.
There is only one tear duct and it is very tiny as you can imagine.
Well, I am prepared to do whatever it takes for my little Monkey girl
She IS much more subdued after a car ride, she lets me pick her up afterwards, whereas I can never do so any other time :p Never tried the bunny burrito thign before, as I can never get a hold of her to try! lol
Tomorrow we’ll find out, at any rate ![]()
My poor Monkey bun has an ulcer in her eye
We’ve got to put drops in it every 6 hours for 14 days, and next week we gotta take her in again for a check up. Poor baby.. she’ so mad at us right now, she hated her drops ![]()
Ouch! I’m sorry she’s mad, but I’m glad you know what is wrong with her. Better to know.
But I know how she feels with the eye drops, I hate eye drops myself and I know putting them in a rabbits eyes can prove quite the challenge.
Do you think she has some photo sensitivity in her eye due to the ulcer too?
Its possible, when I turned her light on today, she hopped into her grass house immediately. But that may just be because I interrupted her nap by turning the light on, and she wanted darkness to sleep in. She’s napping in her cage right now, ignoring her carrot treat… she must be really mad at us to ignore the carrot…
Gosh good luck treating that. I have 3 buns all with constant eye issues where we administer drops. It can be challenging for sure.
Its going to be super challenging. She hates to be picked up or touched at the best of times, never mind every 6 hours >.<
I’m glad to hear you got to the vet and got an answer. You do want to make sure that you treat an eye ulcer as instructed – if left untreated, they can get pretty nasty. I have seen them where they have “melted” all the way through the surface, causing the eye to rupture!!!! You alway want to watch and make sure she’s not pawing or rubbing at it, which could also cause problems!!!!! But it does sound like your a doding bunny slave and will make sure she gets all her treatments!!!!!!!!!
Good stuff you have an answer!!! Keep us posted on the recovery!! {{Monkeybun}}
Well, it’s been challenging on day 1 to get the drops in her eye. She’s realized that when both me and the hubby are in there with her, it means nothing good is coming out of it, so she lunges and scratches at us. Even bit me last night. 2 weeks of this is gonna be rough
My poor baby is so confused a to why we’re being so mean! *cry*
MonkeyBun – I feel your pain. My dwarf female was smart enough to figure that out too. We had to block off escape routes and sort corner her. You might want to try to catch her and then wrap her in a large bath towel. Like a bunny burrito. We always give all buns a treat after someone gets meds….they all like that part. Good luck with it and keep at it.
Yeah, we’ve been trying the bunny burrito, but all our towels are too big! lol. So at her 8 am eye drop this morning, we trried soemthign else: wrapping her up in my hubby’s shirt instead. She likes his shirts, so it worked a little better, and it wasn’t as big. Her next drop in about 10 minutes may be more challenging, as this time I’ve got to do it alone, as hubby is working… *crosses fingers*
I feel your pain MonkeyBun. I have a lionhead/angora mix named Fuzzy that hates to be picked up as well, let alone be touched. About a year ago he got a scratch on his left eye (the vet thought it was from the hay) and I was to put drops in his eye twice a day for ten days. At first it would take my husband, my daughter and myself to catch him to do this and it would take quite some time of chasing him and trying to corner him. The poor little guy would panic and run and squeal (horrible sound!) when we would catch him. After two days of this he stopped eating and then went into GI stasis. I thought (and the vet agreed) that it was due to the stress of us chasing him – he would get so upset – that he stopped eating. Since he had the GI stasis and I had to force feed him, give him medication plus put the drops in twice a day what I decided to do so the catching him wouldn’t be so stressful for him was to confine him to his cage. I hated doing this because all my buns are free range bunnies and are never in cages. He only uses his cage as a toilet and to eat his hay and that’s it. But by confining him it meant we didn’t have to stress him out so badly 5 to 6 times a day. He did much better and was eating and pooping in no time but still had to stay confined for about six more days until we were done with the drops. Boy was he doing binkies all over the place when it was all over and he got to come out!
I even did a couple of my own binkies because I was so happy to finally let him out of there!
The weird thing about my little Fuzzy man is that he hates being picked up, absolutely hates it but once you are holding him and petting him he just melts like butter and seems to love it. I swear I would give anything to know what goes on in his little bunny head! ![]()
Bunnyluvr – cage confinement – well I can see where that wouldn’t stress them so much. We are doing eye drops right now with our male lop Dino who is about the sweetest thing from a distance. He does not want to be pet, touched or picked up. Only his girl Gracie and touch or kiss him apparently and my touch is like fire — he runs away so fast. As soon as we are done with drops he runs into his binky bunny house and sticks his head out for his treat. I would try that cage confinement for awhile if she is getting really stressed out….
Well, it went better when it was just me giving the eye drop to her. Maybe I’ll have to do that, keep the hubby out til its done.
i just took my shelby tot he vet today for that and they said she had gotten something in it and it was tryn to b washed out n there tear ducts r so small they have trouble washing it out so i was clogged they flushed her eyes and gave her eye drops and an antibotic for 10 days
poor monkey! when i first got mj, he had an eye infection. it was hard to get the hang of putting the drops in his eyes at first, but we finally got it down and his eyes cleared right up. i hope she gets better soon!
YAY her ulcer in her right eye is gone. Took her in for a check up today, and its gone
So, just to be ont he safe side, we checked her left eye. >.< Little ulcer in there too… sigh. So, another 2 weeks of eye drops. One week remaining in her right eye, 2 weeks in her left. getting tired of beign tired… every 6 hours is hard on the sleep schedule.
