Hi yall, i just moved back to school, and the buns came with me. They have their play pen all set up and nice, but they won’t come out of their cage!

Are they scared? What should I do to encourage them to come out??

        I’m so worried

If they are eating, drinking, pooping & peeing, don’t worry, just give them time to adjust & maybe a few extra treats.

I agree with Furface – just let them get comfortable. It’s scary going to a new place and their routine has been changed up for today and they are probably tired.

they are eating drinking and pooping. they’re just very nervous, there were lots of big noises, and an 1.5 hour car drive. they’re now perching up by the entrance of the cage, so i think theyre doing better.
i just want to kiss and love them and make everything better

I’m sure they know that & that in itself will help them adjust, after all their favorite slave is with them to protect them from evil noises & such.

Sounds normal. When we moved, it took Jack about a month to explore the rest of the house. Rucy was checking it out after a few days. Just let them get compfy and feel safe and secure in homebase, and I bet you’ll they’ll eventually come out and check things out. Treats always are good reasons to come out an explore too.

                    Keep us updated.

After we moved Gizmo went exploring within the hour of being moved in

We had already moved her house to the our new house and she was temporarily living her old house in our old house (hope that makes sense)

We let her out in the room with her house in and she went in to get a drink – then went exploring the non Gizmo proofed room, it took her a little while to move into the other rooms downstairs, but once we had the sofas in she was upto her old tricks of squeezing underneath the reclining ones (nice big void under there for her to sleep in lol)

Sounds totally natural to me for them to be a little wary, if you’ve got the room rabbit proofed, i’d leave the front door of their cage open and let them explore in their own time, dependant on the nature of your bunny, either stay with them as a comfort, or (if like Gizmo) leave them to it so that they think they can get upto mischief

If they usually have toys out in the room then put them out also, and if you’ve got something familiar that they used to play around (like a side table or something) it may help to give them some slightly familiar surroundings

                      Matt

I was also going to suggest just leaving their cage door open so they can choose to venture out. You might put a nic cube fence or an x-pen just around it so their area is larger, but not the whole room yet while you bunny proof it.

Once I took Spockie to work in his small cage from when he was a baby. It was a tiny shop I managed. He stepped out for a foot, then went back inside. Then he stepped out for about 3 feet – turned and went back. Well, I watched him do this for about an hour, adding more feet each time, then checking back with his cage each and every time. It was really funny. He was doing a sweep of the place in ever widening circles.

Just give them time to know it’s OK and you’re there. Remember, they have much better hearing so noises you don’t notice outside your room can be heard by them, too.

thanks guys soooo much. I have their cage inside their play pen with the door open 24/7. their playpen has all their favorite toys and litter boxes, as well as some treats scattered about. i think they will just be more like jack, and take a little longer to get used to the new area. and i do live in a dorm, so they probably hear things that i can’t. that makes total sense.

i pet them in their cage and give nose rubs and treats so they feel comfortable. last night, i layed in their play pen for about an hour, just talking on the phone. i think that helped too.

i will definitely keep y’all updated and with pictures of the new place too
