Are fresh Stevia leaves safe for bunnies? I can’t seem to find them on the rabbit safe lists. Thanks in advance!

I don’t know, since I go by the safe list also. Did you check the safe list on the House Rabbit Society website too? http://www.rabbit.org

My general rule of thumb is to only give foods on the safe list, since that is already proven to be OK. Kind of like when you try a very different food or spice yourself – it might be fine, but if you’re allergic it could be a sudden emergency. With my pets, I’d rather be certain and safe.

When we bought our house there was an herb garden already in the yard (most we couldn’t use and got rid of) and one of the plants was Stevia.  When I looked it up it said it’s used to make this sugar that’s suppose to be good for you or something.  But anyways, I’m guessing since it makes sugar and is probably really sweet it probably isn’t good for them.  That’s my guess though.

Yes, Stevia leaves are used to make a sugar that’s much much sweeter than regular cane sugar. If you chew a leaf, it seriously tastes like you just swallowed a cup of sugar. I was thinking it was a bit sugary to give to bunnies…I was just curious if anyone’s ever given it to their buns.

Stevia is also new on the market as an alternative sweetener to sugar.  I think it has less calories.

I am horribly sensitive to artificial sweeteners like Splenda, aspartame, sucralose, etc- gives me an awful headache.  The neurologist I saw said that this is common side affect of artificial sweeteners for many people.  I have not tried Stevia yet.  I can taste artificial sweeteners in any drink almost immediately- one sip and I can taste it and I know not to drink more- and even 1 sip can result in a headache.

Even though it has less calories I think it would still be pretty high in sugar- because I think it is a natural sweetener- and even though you use less Stevia than sugar I still think it would promote bacteria or yeast overgrowth in the gut.

Never heard of it either-then again my green thumb is black

Also-it’s being shown that artificial sweetners are treated by the body the same as regular sugar even though they don’t have the calories they cause an increase in insulin and fat storage-soo likely not ok to give.

I don’t know about the safety of stevia for bunnies, but it is not sugar, and it is not reactive to the body I’m the same way as sugar or other chemical artificial sweeteners. It’s extremely important to not spread false information. Stevia is not a chemical sweetener and does not contain sugar at all. It has a sweet taste to it, but it is not the same as sugar at all.

Hi, Dusterbean and welcome to BinkyBunny. We ask that members please not respond to old threads (this one is from 2009) as it causes confusion and some of these members are no longer active. Thanks
