I can usually tell because I can see the bun’s nails poking out through their fur.

Wow, yours are that short? On some nails, I can see Leroy’s quick past his fur! Though… his nails were really long when I adopted him, so we’re working on getting them down to a better length, and he doesn’t have much fur on his feet either.

maybe because he’s a rex, his nails are different? max’s feet fur is quite long, like a little shag rug around his ankles

For normal-furred bunnies, once the nails start coming through the fur, it’s probably time for a nail trim. I’m not sure about rex bunnies…probably a good idea would be to clip when the non-quick portion of the nail starts looking long.

Yes, the rexes are quite easy to tell if they don’t have dark nails but you do have to be especially vigilant with keeping their nails trimmed. My rex is fortunately white with white nails so it’s very easy to see the quick of the nail for trimming. And she really enjoys a good manicure – NOT :~))
