        Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum.  I just felt like I had to share how low I feel.  I’m so upset – I have just come back from the vet and my darling boy Mr. Flopsy has had to stay in today and over night.  I feel so helpless!  On sunday night he was acting strange, lying about in places he never normally goes, he stopped eating and hasn’t pooped since and he’s drunk hardly anything.  So we took him to the vet on monday morning and she injected a saline solution into him and gave us rehydration sachets for his water.  She said she could feel his poops and told us to keep an eye on him for the next 24 hours.  Well keep an eye on him we did – I have hardly slept a wink.  We massaged his stomach, kept him warm, fed him water through a syringe and generally looked after him.  He seems lifeless compared to how he normally is – he’s always running around, nose in everything, binkies all the time and now he’s just lying there looking so sad – I guess he must be in great pain.  We took him to the vet this morning and she said she will keep him in and give him another saline injection and if there is no improvement they will give him an x-ray or a blood test tomorrow.  Its so infuriating – its a waiting game – why can’t they just find out what’s wrong with him now?  It doesn’t feel right coming home and him not being with us.  I can’t help feeling so pessimistic about the whole thing.  Just wanted to get my feelngs down so sorry if  I come across as miserable but that is how I feel at this point in time.

Hey there, Hope all goes well for you and the little guy. I have to take Jimmy to the vet today and am also scared as hell.
I am sure all will be ok, he is in the best place he can be, so if you look at it that way it might help.
Let us know how he goes on, I am sure he will be binking back into your life in no time.
          Matt

Hi Flopster, welcome to BB, even if its on a bad day for you.

Sometimes its best for the vet to keep your bun overnight so they can keep a good eye on them and monitor your bun’s situation. If anything changes, they’ll be right there to help. I’d feel miserable if my Monkey-bun was at the vet all night too, so don’t feel bad about lettign it out ehre, we’re all bunny-slaves here! We knwo exactly how you feel.

How old is your bun by chance?

Hi, Welcome to the forums – sorry about the circumstances that brought you here though. I would imagine most of us can understand your feeling of helplessness. Treating the GI issue right now is priority and what better place than at the vets. Did your vet give him any gut motility drugs? Hopefully, if there’s a blockage, the extra fluids will break it down. Once that passes, he should be feeling a whole lot better.
Please update us on how he is. (((((Healing Vibes))))) for your Mr Flopsy.

Thanks for welcoming me and thanks for your kind words, they have made me feel more optimistic and I realise he is in the best place he can be. I just feel so helpless and I miss him so much, you get so used them being around. Apparently he has drunk some water of his own accord this morning and the vet is phoning me this afternoon with a progress report so I have my fingers crossed for good news.

Jerseygirl – I will ask if they are giving him gut motility drugs, the only thing the vet did that I know of is inject a saline solution for hydration.

Monkeybun – my bun is 17 months old now – still young!

                Thanks once again!

Thanks guys for your lovely words and healing vibes!

Well the vet phoned yesterday afternoon and said that she x-rayed him and couldn’t find a blockage but could see gas and bloat and air is in the stomach and building up in his intestine so she has given him something to help soak up the gas.  She has also given him painkillers and more fluid for hydration.  She also said that she has taken a blood sample which has been sent off to the lab.  She found his blood glucose high but thinks that is from the effects of statis rather than diabetes.  On the plus side she said he’s drinking of his own accord and that he seems interested and alert considering.

He is a stong litle fella and it is sad that he’s so young.  We have to phone up the vets this morning so fingers crossd that we get to bring him home today and that there is an improvement!

Sorry to hear about your little guy. The fact that it’s not a blockage is a really good thing. My Mini-Lop recently went through a terrible statis and we nursed him non-stop for 3 days and had to go to the emergency vet. We thought we were going to lose him but he fought and pulled through. Never give up on your bun, they can be real little fighters!!!

Well we phoned the vet this morning and she had good news for us – Mr Flopsy had pooped and peed in the night and he was eating!  The relief we felt was enormous.  We have picked him up from the vet this afternoon and the little guy was so happy to see us, it just melts your heart!

Our vet is very good actually, we are lucky cos we have come across some useless vets in the past.  She showed us his x-rays and his belly was so bloated the poor thing also the blood test came back fine and we have to give him a course of anti-biotics for the next 5 days.  She said he is still on the road to recovery and we have to keep a close eye on him,  he’ll be back for a check-up on Saturday so between now and then I hope he goes from strength to strength!

He’s already peed on me and done some (loose) poops and he’s had a munch of his favourite parsley - we are over the moon that he is home.  Mr Flopsy and I thank everyone for their kind messages of support and making us feel welcome on the forum ((((sending bunny hugs)))) we really appreciate all the positive comments made, they really helped xxx

Sorry I didn’t see this until now, but welcome Flopster and Mr. Flopsy!!!

I am so glad he’s doing much better and back home. Now we can look forward to pictures and stories of your spunky bunny when he gets back to normal.

Did the vet have any suggestions for changes in his diet? Some bunnies get gas from things like greens in the cabbage family, and others don’t. I’m wondering if it can be traced to something he ate when he first got bloated.

Great news! Gas episodes are tricky and can be the beginnings of a more serious GI slowdown. Obviously pushing those fluids through helped alot. Have you heard of simethicone? It’s used for infant gas but can help bunnies with gas. If you suspect a bit of gas, this is easy to give them at home to give some relief.

RabbitPam – Thanks for the welcome! Our vet suggested we up Mr Flopsy’s fibre intake by adding Protexin Pro-Fibre to his diet – I don’t know much about the supplement but its something to think about if it helps him in the long run. We do give him plenty of Timothy hay and veg – he loves parsley and romaine lettuce. We also feed him Burgess Excel pellets which he goes mad for – we did get Oxbow Bunny Basics but they were always left at the bottom of the bowl in the attempt to gradually switch him over – maybe we should be more persistant as I think they have a higher amount of fibre in them. We never feed him on the more gassy veg like broccoli and cabbage. I really don’t know what could have triggered it off – he started eating his pellets as normal on Sunday night, I noticed he didn’t have as much as normal before he was out and about again and then it all happened. Actually he hasn’t been interested in the pellets since and he ate only 1 pellet this morning – is it possibile he’s gone off them and that they were the cause? He usually wolfs them down so maybe we should give them in 2 sittings rather than 1 large one?

jerseygirl – I have seen simethicone mentioned on this forum and on other articles about GI Statis but don’t really know anything about it. I will look into it further and purhase some incase he should ever get it again (touch wood he doesn’t). The vet has given us Baytril for him – it seems to be the prefered anti-biotic here in the UK but although Mr Flopsy is very affectionate he is not so keen on being handled unless he’s getting stroked so we have had no luck in administering baytril to him today – the vet said to give him 0.4ml baytril in 100mls of water instead of syringing it into his mouth – I fear our attempts at doing it this morning may have annoyed him to say the least as he hasn’t come out from under the guinea pigs home for most of the day but on the plus side he has eaten nearly a full bowl of parsley and romaine. He’s mainly been eating a load of hay which I guess his system really needs.

The problem I see with putting the baytril in his water is how can you ensure he gets the entire dose unless he completely drinks the 100mls of water also? Others have mentioned Baytril has a nice flavour I think. Maybe put some drops on a treat and get him interested in the flavour. Then hopefully he’ll take it from a syringe more readily. I wonder if you could mix the 0.4mls into applesauce? Surley he’d lap that up! When I’ve syringed meds before, I’ve put the rabbit on it’s back in my lap and slowly syringed meds in side of mouth, then sat them up.

I hadn’t heard of Pro-fibre before.  I did a quick search.   Sounds interesting.
