my brother was holding my rabbit waffles last night and she kicked out of his embrace and fell like a foot onto the his bed and ended up fracturing her hip or her pelvis.. i took her to the emergency vet last night and she didn’t really help much. they charged $300 for X rays and didnt really give us much information, so i was looking for some here..
has anyone ever eperienced anything like this? shes dragging her back feet and cant move them, but she can still feel them, and her organs and everything are working fine.
when she goes potty i have to wash her off in the sink, but i’m concerned if she isnt completly 100% dry, can that lead to more complications? i’ve been wiping her when she goes, and if her pee gets anywhere i’ve been giving her a miniature bath, but shes fidgety when i try to towel her off completely dry…
she doesnt seem to be in any pain, shes still eating and playing and trying her damndest to run around my room with only two legs!! shes a trooper! but i was just wondering if anyone has even experienced anything like this and can tell their story or give any imput/ advice? thanks!
I have never had anything like this happen but will try to give you some advice.
First of all I would get her to a rabbit savvy vet. Did the emergency vet give you the x-rays? If not, get them to show to the rabbit savvy vet. Did the e-vet do anything for her besides the x-rays? Sounds like they don’t know much about bunnies.
As for the potty problem. Instead of washing her in the sink (which might hurt her anyway) try using cornstarch instead. Just pour some in your hand and gently rub in to the fur that is wet with the potty. This will remove the urine and dry her as well.
How is she doing now? That’s good that she’s still got some spunk in her but I would try to keep her more confined so she doesn’t hurt herself more.

I agree get her to a vet. I saw your post on the Diet & Care and sent you a link to the New Jersey House Rabbit Society list of vets.
I think the other vet should be able to get the x-rays as well like bunnyluvr said.
Also just because she doesn’t seem like she’s in pain doesn’t mean she isn’t in pain – rabbits are prey animals and hide pain well.
Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear about this! Yes, take her to a vet asap, and like bunnyluvr said, bring the x-rays, that way you don’t have to pay for them again and so the bunny vet can assess her and start treatment right away instead of being delayed by doing the x-rays again. I wouldn’t be surprised; however, if the bunny vet has to take x-rays again, anyway. From what it sounds like, the e-vet didn’t know too much about bunnies and probably didn’t know what they were looking for, so the x-rays might not be of the right parts or the bunny might not have been positioned correctly to see anything in the x-rays. I’d try to restrict her activity as much as possible, not only do you not want her to hurt herself further, but you also don’t want her to start rubbing raw patches and sores on her legs from dragging them around. Until the vet can get you in, monitor her eating, pooping, and peeing. I’m no vet, but I wonder if she did damage to a tendon or ligament that might be preventing movement in her back legs… those wouldn’t show up on an x-ray.
PS….

Sounds like your e-vet doesn’t know buns. Take her to a good rabbit vet asap! If she’s fidgety when you dry her off its likely that she’s feelign some pain when you do so, so try not to wash her off with water. Try the cornstarch like bunnyluvr said.
*snuggles for poor little bun*
Also, make sure to teach your brother how to properly hold a bun, if your bun was able to kick out like that!
You should get her to a rabbit vet ASAP- depending on what the x-rays do or not show show the bunny should probably be treated for spinal cord or disc injury/inflammation time is of the essence when treating these injuries~
I’m so sorry to hear this! Like the others said, definitely get her seen by an experienced rabbit vet, or better yet a specialist if there is one they can recommend… They have to do *something* for her…
(((WAFFLES!)))
OK! i have an update! i called the e-vet back up and they gave me anti-inflamatory stuff to give her. i have her confined in a travel carrying case so theres less room for her to move around. she’s eating, pooping, peeing and playing normally. [i bought her a little set of balls with bells in them and shes been playing”basketball” and tossing them into her food bowl, its so cute] and shes starting to move her legs!! shes able to stretch them and move them a little but still not walking on them. i don’t have time to take her to the vet today but i’m going to call and make an appt for tomarrow ![]()
That’s good! I’m glad the e-vet was more helpful. Do keep us updated.
I’m glad to hear that the vet gave you something to help out, it must be really scary that she can’t move her back legs, I would assume that means that they hurt a lot. I hope that she is feeling better soon!
Any updates? Did you get her back to the vet? How is she doing?
ok i have another update! i’m sorry its been a while, but with the semester just starting at school its been hectic!
but, waffles is walking!!! she looks like she’s going to be fine! she is a little lopsided and is working on getting her balance back in order after about 3 weeks of not really moving around at all but she can in fact walk, and is now relearning to use her litter box! she’s moved back into her big cage with enough room to get up and stretch and walk a little but not enough room to run around and get to injured. she’s making major steps toward improvement and should have a full recovery!
thanks everyone for the healing vibes ![]()
That’s great news!
