I have two beautiful baby lionhead girls, about 6 months old. When i got them from the luv n buns rescue they had just been spayed and were doing well with their litter box inside their cage and out but they are making a mess in their cage everywhere sometimes and just peeing right in the middle of the cage or pooing in the opposite corner. Ive moved the litter box if they go in the other corner but what do i do about them going right in the middle of the cage??They are pretty good with outside of the cage except we have had a few accidents on my bed but thats understandable because of the scent and i just have to watch them closely.

What is your cage set up like?  If they are not using the litterbox what are they peeing on in the cage?  newspaper?  blanket?  bedding?

they do use their litter box i see them going pee in it but sometimes they just go on  the floor (i put newspaper down on the cage floor) and when i see they went i just replace the newspaper. Im not really sure if its because they are young and just having afew accidents or what is going on. ?? thanks

I would line the bottom with newspaper. Mine love to pee on newspaper another reason I didnt want to make a dig box! What is the bottom of the cage plastic?

How long has it been since their spay? Have you noticed any behavioral changes between the both of them. Could one be hogging the box forcing the other pee outside of the box? I know my bunny Jack can get very bossy with a particular box and so I have two.

It your cage is lined with newspaper and even in the litterbox has another type of litter in it-  they may be getting mixed signals and think newspaper is OK to pee on.  You could try removing the newspaper and see if that helps.

yes i think i will try taking the news paper out. its been about 2 weeks since they have been spayed and the bigger one (daisy) who really loves her smaller sister (Winnie) does pust her around kind of alot, she takes the food right out of her mouth, will lay right on top of her and they usually arent in the litter box together. so if daisy isnt letting winnie get a chance to get her turn what should i do??

If one bun isn’t letting the other use the box, you might just have to get a 2nd box. I use a towel on the floor of my Monkey’s cage, she has only peed on it once, and thats because I was in the process of cleaning her box and she didn’t know where else to go

I also would try a second litter  box and removing the newspaper from the floor of the pen.  What I did to not confuse the buns but still have a protection for the flooring was to put fleece on the floor.  Fleece is absorbent and if they pee on it it will sop it up and keep the floor dry and fleece is easy to just throw in the wash to freshen it up.  And the buns LOVE it and as an added bonus for your furry buns..it helps to attract the fur, this way there is more of it in one place rather then all over the place.  My Drue is a BIG shedder and it’s insane in his area when he’s going through a shed but if there is fleece around a lot of it will stick to that…then I just bring the fleece outside, pull off the extra fur and let it fly away for birds to grab and then through the fleece in the washing machine so that it’s like new

My bun sometimes aimed over the edge of hers as well, we’ve gone through a few different sized plastic storage containers finding one she likes and has high enough edges on it. Granted, my bun is tiny too You could try a cat litter box with the scatter guard on it, if you need a larger box.

You can try litterboxes with a little lip, or even covered boxes.  (mine don’t like covered boxes, but some members have had success with them.

I had a lipped version for a while – worked well.
