Hello all, as I’m sure some of you know, my boy Dylan is going to be pretty big when he is full grown. He’s nearly 4 months old now, and I’m starting to introduce greens along with a huge handful of hay and dried grass, and three handfulls of pellets in the morning, topped up at night (pretty much unlimited still) and obviously fresh water all the time.

Anyway, following a link from another thread I have just discovered thehayexperts.co.uk – it’s amazing! I didn’t think the uk was really geared up to good bunny care, but this website is going to be my lifesaver – no more trips to pets at home! So what I was wondering is how much should be looking to feed him when he’s fully grown? Is a 25lb bale of hay reasonable, or is it going to arrive and have the neighbors thinking I’m keeping a pony in the cellar?! Or will I order a 9lb bag and find it only lasts a week? I know I can cut out the pellets if I’m feeding loads of hay and greens, but he does love his pellets. I’ve read on here about people feeding their buns 1/4cup of pellets, but I’m guessing they’re ‘normal’ sized – Dyl is 8lb already, should I multiply amounts by the increase in his size or doesn’t it work like that?!

As for greens – think I’m going to have to turn my garden over to bunny food or strike up a friendship with everyone on the local allotment!

Thanks for the help, off to give Dylan some carrot to make friends again after his 2nd jab this afternoon!

        Charlie

Well he’s young and he’s still growing so you don’t want to cut out the pellets at this point.

I think you can start reducing pellets after he is fully grown which could be a few more months and 1/4 pound is what is usually recommended per 5 pounds bunny.

I think Sarita means 1/4 cup – not pound per 5 pounds of bunny! 1/4 pound would be a lot of pellets!

LOL! Good eye Bunnyluvr… I didn’t even notice that!

I recently got the Oxbow 50lb box of hay, and it is not as huge as you’d think… about 4 feet tall, maybe 18 inches wide and deep. It sits in my walk-in closet and honestly, it does not take up much room. My guess is it should get my two buns thru about 6 months or so… they weigh a total of 9 pounds together. If you can get bulk hay, DO IT!!! I get giddy when I think of the money I’m saving by buying in bulk. It’s still the same great quality hay that my buns love from the smaller bags, just more of it!
