Does anyone else feed oats? For several months I’ve fed oats (no more than 1 tbsp/day, 5 pound bunny) to Mr. Bunny. I’ve recently read that oats aren’t so great to feed and they can cause over-production of cecals and nonstop shedding.   Mr. Bunny doesn’t have any more cecals than he can eat – but I have noticed that since I started feeding oats daily he seems to always have a very very light, tufts-of-fur shedding on his butt. Is it a bad thing for the shedding to be happening? Should I stop feeding oats?

Well oats are carbohydrates and should only be fed as a treat – I’m honestly not sure if the oats and shedding are related – that could be the season (longer days).

If it were me, I would not feed the oats every single day only every once in a while as a treat.

Rabbits do love oats for some reason too.

I sometimes give oats as a treat, but just a few crumbs of it. Did you mean 1 tablespoon? That’s way much. Don’t know about the shedding connection but oats are high in starch so they will make a bunny quickly fat amd can compromise his digestive system.

I give Bambi oats- 2 tbsp once a week. It was recommended by my Bothell vet as part of his baby bun diet; he’ll stop getting it once he turns 6 months.

Hmm…Mr. Bunny is actually a pretty skinny bun, so I don’t think he’s getting fat from the oats…
Eh, either way, I’ll start getting him off the oats. He’ll probably be mad at me…

I think the oats need to be fed in moderation due to the fact that they are a higher carb treat- and higher carbs lead to increased sugar in the gut.  I give my bunnies 1 teaspoon about once a week.

Sammy’s absolute favorite hay is the Oat Hay. You might try that as a daily option with the actual oats only an occasional treat.
