Well, Rui got back from spending the night at the vet today. In addition to being neutered, he also had 6 teeth removed, his four incisors and 2 peg teeth. If that wasn’t bad enough, he also has an ulcer in his left eye, which he got sometime during the surgery, possible just from laying on that side for so long.

Despite all this, he doing surprisingly well. He’s eating some pellets and wolfs down all the veggies I can give him. Haven’t seen him touch the hay, but he usually doesn’t go for hay if there are other options. Other than that he’s been sleeping pretty much exclusively.

I have a couple questions that may or may not be answerable.

        1. He’s on an antibiotic and a pain medicine which are orally administered and that’s fine because I think Bactrim might be his favorite thing in the world. But I’m supposed to put an antibiotic ointment, chloramphenicol, in his eye twice daily. Now, I know that if I were Rui, and someone tried to squeeze some gunk in my eye when it hurt and I felt awful, that I would not go for it. And that’s pretty much what happened. First of all, I got all the medications ready and put a towel in my lap, but when I opened the cage and reached for him, he backed away. Rui doesn’t like being picked up, but he normally tolerates it just fine. I’m guessing that this is just because he had a rotten two days and all kinds of strange people have been picking him up and doing unspeakable things to him. I waited for him to come out and then put him in my lap and wrapped him up. He wasn’t a fan. He took the oral medications fine just as expected and then shut his eyes tightly and tried to burrow deeper into the towel when I tried to put the ointment in his eye. I did my best, but I don’t think that I really got any in. I gave him a raisin then let him into the safety of his cage. So my question is this: How in the world am I supposed to get this stuff in his eye? Any advice at all? I have to say that I’m not expecting much, but I thought I’d ask.

        2. I’m also supposed to restrict his activity for two weeks. The problem is that Rui has never really been interested in toys, no matter what I give him. He’s a very active rabbit. He likes to run, and binky, and chase, and jump up on things. Restricting him to his cage for two weeks might send him over the edge. He’s already put his mouth on the door and tried to pull at it, very gingerly, but I’m afraid he’ll hurt himself. It doesn’t help that Emrys comes and sticks his nose in at Rui, presumably wondering why he isn’t coming out to play. I guess I could move the cages to separate rooms, but I’m afraid that they’ll unbond if they don’t get to see each other. So does anybody have any advice as to what I could do?

        3. Is there anything else I can do for my miserable little bun? I plan to spend a lot of time near his cage talking to him and giving him new and interesting things to eat, as well as giving him thorough nose rubs when I take him out to give him his medicines. But right now he looks as if he’s had all one little bunny can take

Wow, poor Rui – lots of stuff to have to deal with.

          1. Regarding putting eye ointment on: I am sorry, I will have to call in some help on that one. I haven’t had to put anything besides drops ON eyes, and that’s much easier. You might also call your vet.  I’m assuming that just putting it on the edges of the eye – when eye is closed if that will be just fine – that it will seep into the eye. ???

EDITED TO ADD THIS LINK:   I just found this article that talks about how to apply meds which includes eye ointments(you’ll have to scroll down once you are on the page) http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/medicating.html

          2. Do you have access to an xpen. This will help you restrict exercise without having him being confined to a cage. (depending on the size). Otherwise since he chews on his cage, you might put a phone book or a pieces of cardboard ziptied to the area where he chews on the cage. That way he can spend some time messing with that.

2a:  So was he COMPLETELY bonded with Emry before this? If they were a bonded peaceful pair that lived together, then I don’t see any reason that they can’t be together. However, there are two things to be cautious of. If you did not bring Emry with on the car ride home to help Emry get used Rui’s new “vet” smell then Emry may not recogniz Rui right away and see him as an intruder. Even just short visits to the vets can make the “returning” bunny smell funky to the other and this can cause fights. So you will want to watch that.

Also, it’s not unusual for a “sick” bunny to get picked on, but many times the “best” buddy can help with healing if the bond is strong.

Otherwise, if they weren’t fully bonded, but just getting to know each other then the way you have it now is just fine.

          3. Awe, sounds like your plan to just give him some extra love and attention is perfect.  He’ll need quiet time to rest too, and so maybe some extra compfy soft bedding if you don’t have any now.

Feel better Rui!!! What a lot to go thru for such a little guy! He’s very lucky to have you!

That is great that he is eating already, especially with getting all of those teeth removed! It may be necessary to cut his hay into smaller pieces to get him to eat it, I believe that is the issue when getting front teeth removed… his pellets should be fine b/c he will use his molars to grind them up.

Restricted activity for boys is sometimes more of a suggestion than a requirement. Spays in females are invasive, so they need to be confined for 1-2 weeks. You can make the call depending on how he is behaving/recovering whether or not he can be allowed out for short exercise sessions. The xpen idea is good! If he can have a little bit more room to stretch his legs, that will make him feel better, but if he seems to overexert himself or tire out easily, you might want to limit that time to about 20-30 minutes.

Keep us posted on how he does!

            ((((((((Rui!))))))))

I used to have an ointment to give to Spockie’s eyes several times for a repeated blockage. It was the kind where I put a drop of the cream into the front corner of his eye, and it melted with his body temperature so it actually flowed into his eye and duct as that happened. Not sure what kind of eye med you’re using, but I would try applying it to the corner so even when he squeezes shut, you can get it in there.

Maybe put a hanging kabob with a bell on his cage on the inside. He can chew it, bat it, ring it, and generally make a tasty playful fuss. Love the phone book idea, too.

Thank you all so much for your concern and helpful tips. Rui’s doing much better now. He’s eating pellets, hay, and veggies. I think I’m giving him more vegs than he can eat though. He’s still sleeping a lot and his left eye is all squinty, but I still feel like he’s recovering nicely. It seems like he’s having a little trouble getting used to life without front teeth. He has a little trouble picking up food. I think he might not be eating as much as he was because he’s getting frustrated. But really his front teeth were messed up, the bottom left one stuck almost straight out, and gave him a lot of trouble too. I think in a few more days he’ll be fine.
When we did the medications this morning he struggled a lot, but I think I managed to get some of the ointment into his eye. It really pretty thick stuff, so I think the only way to do it is to pull his eye open and put it on. It’s really difficult when he doesn’t want to cooperate.
I don’t have an x-pen, though I would like one. Rui’s cage is big enough that he can stretch out comfortably with plenty of room to spare. I’m thinking that I might let him out for a bit tonight though. I’m just afraid that his energy is going to build up so that when I do finally let him out, he’ll go nuts zipping around the house. It seems like letting him out now, when he’s still sleeping a lot would be better. He just really isn’t into toys at all. I have a kabob with wood chew in the big cage Emrys is in now that they used to share, but I never saw either one actively interested in it. Emrys is into tearing up phone books, but Rui never tried. He likes pulling up carpet, and eating it, an activity I strongly discourage. He’s very curious and likes to know what I’m doing, which is why I’m sitting on the floor next to his cage right now. I figured giving him different kinds of new veggies would be interesting for him. The only thing that I ever gave them, besides chew sticks, that they seemed to like was a large piece of fabric that they like to dig at and rearrange. Hmm, I could put that into his cage.
As for his bond with Emrys, it’s really like a big brother-little brother relationship. Emrys loves Rui, he follows him around, imitates what he does, and generally makes himself a nuisance. Rui likes to play with him sometimes, chase mostly, but he’d rather hang around me and pretend that I’m a jungle gym. They’ve been in separate cages for a little over a week because of Emrys’ persistent mounting attempts. He gave Rui some nasty scratches and pulled out his fur while I was at work. But I’d been letting them both out when I was home and could stop anything to serious from happening. Emrys keeps going to visit Rui when I let him out though. He shoves his nose into the cage, and I think he was trying to give him some licks. I think that it would be nice to let them out for a short supervised time together, but I hate to outright ignore the vet’s instructions.

Rui just got back from his post op check up and the vet says everything looks good. His eye is still a little red-rimmed, but that should clear up soon, especially since we can stop irritating it with the ointment. The vet also said that I could let him out of the cage now. I didn’t tell him that I had been letting him out for ~20 min each time after I gave him his meds. But I was careful and didn’t let him jump on things. He didn’t seem to really feel like running, but he was very happy to be allowed to wander around and sit with me.
Thanks again everyone for all your concern.

With his veggies you may try cutting them up in 1″ slices (if you don’t already). When I adopted Rucy, she was missing one front incisor and this is what they suggested, so I can imagine that have NO incisors, it may be helpful to have them cut up so he can just pick them up with his lips and get the pieces back to his molars.
