        Hi there,

One of my rabbits, the one that hasn’t had any health problems up to this point, has really been sneezing a lot. He’s always done it every now and then, but today, he’s really been going at it. Every now and then he’ll even sort of try to hack something up.

It’s 1:30am, so I can’t really take him to a vet, and it’s a stat holiday tomorrow, so my regular vet (and the other bunny vet I know) are closed. I’m not sure what to do.

Is this something normal? Does he have a cold? Seems to have his nose dry. He’s eating his hay and pellets as vigorously as usual, and going to the bathroom.

Just kinda freaked, and can’t go to sleep (and keeping him awake too, I think) cause he keeps sneezing. =( Should I take him to a vet ASAP?

Is there any discharge?  Or just sneezing?

Also, is he eating and pooping normally?

Finally, is he lifing his head to try and get more air in, or just making wet miserable noises?  The head-lifing is an emergency!  The rest are serious but if he’s eating and pooping okay then tomorrow may be fine.

No discharge, just the sneezing and the occasional hack (which is what worried me most.)

He seems to be okay now, seems the worst was last night. But when he was sneezing, it jsut seemed like a sneeze, not really a wet noise either. He wasn’t lifting his head either. Was just doing his own thing, sneezes a bunch of times and that’s it, sometimes ending with a hack (like he’s trying to throw up a hairball). But didn’t seem like he was having trouble breathing.

He’s eating and pooping okay. I’m still keeping a close eye…

              How is he doing today?

My little guy is a sneezer. He sneezes often throughout the day. The vet said there is nothing wrong with him – it is probably hay dust. He does like to bury his head in the hay.
I also get sneezes/hacks from both my bunnies when the put their head in their food bowl before I finish pouring in the pellets!

                He’s doing good, thank goodness.

I still wonder what set him off. The hay has never affected him before, nor was it fresh put in when he started. =/ But I suppose he was just reacting to something.

He’s going at it again. But I think I figured out something that may have triggered it: the new Oxbow papaya pellets. He started reacting last time after I gave him one, and same thing today… They are a bit powdery. But they never bothered him before…

hmmmm. That’s strange. Well, you could try sifting them a bit first since they seem to be a little more powdery and see if that helps.???

If it’s an allergy, then the papaya dust may be doing it. I was thinking pellet dust earlier, because sometimes both hay and pellets have dust settle toward the bottom of the bag, so when you come near the end you can easily scoop it into the dish. But your papaya theory makes sense.

You can shake or wipe his food before putting it in his bowls. However, if it is the tablets and an allergy, I’d just stop giving it to him for a couple of days. If he stops sneezing, then that’s it.

As for not doing it before, in humans allergies build up. So they can come on after all has been well before. I would expect the same can be true for bunnies.
