        Hi everyone,

I came across this site when I was looking up some information on bunnies, and I was so impressed by the information here as well as the supportive forum, that I decided to join =) This is rare for me – I don’t use forums often.  However, I just got a new bunny – his name is Leroy and he is the sweetest, nicest, most adorable little bunny I’ve ever met. Ok, aside from Little Suger.  I had Little Sugar when I was much younger and she was a great bunny – put up with whatever I wanted to do, let me hold and pet her, she wasnt even too bad about having her nails done. Despite the fact that my parents never let me get her spayed (like I said, I was only in grade school when I got her so what my parents decided was law, since I had no money ) she never had any of the territorial issues commenly seen in unfixed buns that I’ve been reading about.  She lived to be 8 too, which, I’ve now found out is old, given the fact that they’re prone to reproductive cancers.  Anyway, I didn’t know too much about rabbits then – like I said, I was little.  I’ve been dying to get a pet for some time now; it’s just too quiet around the house without one, and a rabbit seemed like a good choice.  I’m determined to do things the right way this time around, and as much as I’ve been reading, it seems like I still have questions…

Anyway, first a little about my Leroy.  He’s a mini rex, broken grey and white.  About a year old.  I got him from a local humane society, so he’s been neutered.  He has such a quirky personalitly and warmed up to me right away.  When I’m lying on the floor reading, he’ll come over and sniff all around me and sometimes hop up and sit on my back.  When I’m on my laptop on the floor, I have a problem though, he gets a bit jealous and will climb all over the keyboard and try to bite at the screen – he actually ripped out two keys once when he was particularily upset about me not paying enough attention to him – fortunately, they clip in and I was able to put them back.  He loves being petted, and he’ll tolerate being picked up, though once I’m holding him, I can sit still with him in my arms forever and he seems to enjoy it.  It’s holding him to trim his nails that he sometimes struggles.  But I’ve been working with him.  Sometimes I’ll just hold him and get the clippers out and pretend to snip each of his nails and then let him go – he always gets a crasin for nail trims, even if I didn’t really take anything off.  The little bun has the BEST litter box habits ever.  He’s only ever had one accident outside the box, and that was on the day I brought him home.  He peed on me bed; I think in part that was just marking his new home becasue when I brough him home, it was only 2 weeks after his neuter surgery, so he might have had some active hormones left in him, and also I think he was a little scared and overwhelmed.  Other than the occasional poop being flung out of the litter box, I haven’t had any problems with him in that regard.  He’s a voracious eater and will eat almost any veggie I give him – expect spinach.  I tried a few leaves with him a couple times.  the first time he ate one whole leaf and then ignored the rest, the second time he started eating a leaf and spit it back out.  It didn’t seem to disagree with him – he didn’t have any runny poo or anything after he ate the leaf, but maybe he just doesn’t like the taste I’ve been working my way though the list posted on the House Rabbit Society website, so far he seems to really really like cilantro, and as a treat, he loves having a fresh cherry (pit removed first, of course) – they turn his lips all red   He also eats tons of hay, so I’m hoping we won’t ever have any GI issues.

As far as pellets go, I’m not sure how much I should feed… He’s 2.23kg which is 4.9lbs, according to Google.  I’ve been giving him 1/8 cup in the morning and 1/8 in the evening, but I don’t know if that’s enough… I know he likes his pellets, but he always seems so hungry when I go to his food bin and he realizes he’s getting fed (I feed at about the same time every day, and he’s started to wake me up on the weekends when it’s time for breakfast – he doesn’t know I don’t have to work those days and that I’m allowed to sleep in! lol).  He gets unlimited hay and veggies when I go home for lunch and then before I go to bed, so about a cup and a half a day of veggies. Anyway, the thing about the pellets is, that I accidentally bought the wrong kind and was unable to return them… they’re alfalfa based – at least, I think, that was the fiorst ingredient listed – which I know is richer than he needs, which is why i was going to limit him to 1/4 cup per day instead of giving him closer to 1/2 cup.  As for the details of the pellets, crude protein min. 17%, crude fat min. 2.3%, crude fiber max. 22%, calcuim 0.4-0.9%, phosphorous min 0.3%, salt min. 0.3-0.8%.  What do you guys think? Should I just buy a different kind, gradually switch him over, and then trash the rest of this, or will it be ok for me to finish the 10lb bag?  Also, there were the dumb little colored “treats” and dried carrots and papaya in there, and I know theyre not supposed to have those – couldn’t tell from reading the bag that it was going to have those things.  Anyway, I sat there and sifted through all of it and picked out all those bits, and now use them as very rare treats.

Ok, now for my biggest question.  I’ve noticed some raw patches on his hocks.  From everything I’ve read, it sounds like he has “sore hocks” but theyre just pink and missing fur, not open wounds and Leroy doesn’t seem to be bothered by them.  He’s had them since I brought him home from the shelter, so he probably got them from sitting on the hard, stainless steel cage floor.  His cage here – yes, I have to keep him in a cage when I’m gone becasue my roommate isn’t too comfortable with him and she usually gets home from work earlier than me, so he has to stay in his cage unless I’m home.  But he gets out to play in his big pen (I don’t know how big it is, but it takes up half of our large living room) for at least 4 hours every night, and about 45 minutes when I come home for lunch – sometimes in the morning too, but I’m always in such a rush, I sometimes can’t let him out ).  Anyway, his cage does have a wire floor, but i’ve completely covered it with cardboard, he has a big litter box in one corner and a fleece cat bed in the other (and lots of toys!), so he should be ok on those surfaces, right?  He loves lounging in the bed, does flops all the time.  When he’s out in his pen, he’s on carpet – which I’ve heard might rub his paws raw, but I don’t know what else to do about it, I’ve been looking for those big square foam ish tiles that I saw in some of the pictures here, but cant find them in any local stores… Any suggestions?  Also, the little bugger thumps alot, I’m not sure why, a lot of times, he thumps with seemingly no provocation (he thumps sometimes after I’ve been holding him and he was getting impatient and wanting down).  I’ve head that might aggravate it.  Also, when I got him at the beginning of this month, his nails were fairly long… I’ve been working to get the quick down so I can keep his nails shorter.  I know because he’s a rex, it might be just that he has less than adequate fur pads.   Also, I clean his litter boxes twice a day, so he’s never sitting in filth, and like I said, he doesn’t go anywhere but his boxes.  Anyway, I’ve heard a lot of different home remedies for this – since they’re not bleeding or anything, just lacking fur, I want to try some home fixes before taking him to the vet.  Any suggestions for what works best?  New-skin maybe? Or just cleaning with soap and water?  I don’t want to make them worse which is why I’ve been hesitant to try anything.  I’ve been monitoring them, and they don’t seem to be getting bigger… about the size of an Alleve pill is the only way I can describe it… about the size of these smiley faces (depending on your screen res though, that might not be accurate)…

Ok, sorry for such a long post – congrats if you got through all of it, lol. I’m just so excited about my bunny!  By the way, he’s gotten used to me now so he runs up to me when I come to play with him in his pen!

        Thanks!

thanks for your advice! yeah, i think splitting up their meals like that is best. come to think of it, Leroy won’t eat bananas – though I only tried a slice once.

Welcome to the forums Barbie! I gotta say, I’m impressed. You seem to know just how to handle rabbits and Leroy appreciates you for it. He sounds like a doll.
As he’s still young, the alfalfa pellets are ok but yes, I would transition him onto adult rabbit pellets. The protein/fibre ratio is not bad for young rabbit pellets. In the adult pellets, aim for something like 14-16% protein and upwards of 22% fibre, fat content under 3 % ideally. You can always donate left over pellets to the Humane Society.

The hock issue is common to rex breed because the lack of fur on their hocks like you said. His longer nails probably contributed to these areas forming. If the skin is not broken, I would not worry overly. In time the fur may grow back or he may just have those permanent spots. You’ve already given him soft surfaces as a preventative measure. Just keep an eye on them and continue to get those nails shorter.

As to the thumping….who knows. Leroy sounds like a fairly secure bunny and maybe it’s his way of communicating with you. If the thumps are not the “warning of danger” type, they’re often the “warning the human slave that I’m peeved” type!

Thanks Jersey Girl – I’m definitely trying =)

I’ve heard a lot about Oxbow pellets, they seem to be the pellet of choice among the bunny community, what kind of pellets do you use / would you suggest?

If I didn’t worry so much about him aggravating his hocks, I’d think his thumping is cute – it’s usually not aggressive, at least, he’s never charged at me or bitten or anything like that in conjunction with the thumping.

Barbie, you definitely seem like you’re doing your homework! Congrats on your new furbaby!

Sad that Leroy has to be in a cage, but it sounds like you’re giving him plenty of out-time and making it comfy for him. Is it still big enough for him to move around a bit in? Just want to make sure he’s not getting sore hocks because he’s forced to be too stationary…

If he has room to move in his cage, then it’s probably just the way he’s built. Rex’s are prone to sore hocks. My Lizzy isn’t even a rex, and her pen is lined with woven-cotton rugs, and her “loft”–she has a hutch she can go hang out in–is lined with towels, so she’s only EVER on soft surfaces, and she still has a couple little bald patches on her back heels. As long as they don’t get bigger, and don’t seem to be scabbing or bleeding, he’s probably ok…

The pellets I use are Kaytee, but a timothy-based Kaytee. Lots of people swear by Oxbow. I, personally, don’t feel the need the spend the extra money when the nutrition-value appears comparable.

And some bunnies just communicate in different ways, so thumping may just be his thing.

I’m glad you found him to be your friend!

                      Welcome.

I have a standard rex named Emmy. One thing with Rexes is that they have a tendency to gain weight for some reason (maybe it’s their build, I’m honestly not sure why, but they seem to have a slower metabolism) so I would definitely do very limited pellets – 1/2 cup a day is way too much pellets (if I’m understanding what I’m reading). Really the bulk of his diet should be the hay and you are feeding him a good amount of veggies too. It’s true that rabbits love their pellets too and sometimes using them more as a treat is a better idea.

Almost 5 pounds is a bit on the larger size for a mini rex, I think the males usually top off at about 4 pounds. Did the rescue say he was overweight? That of course can contribute to sore hocks.

I have a female mini rex (she weighs 3.75 pounds) and she has always had calloused heels. Once they have it, it’s unlikely that they will go away, but you do want to check that they don’t become overly red or inflamed.

Well, I check his hocks every evening, when we’re out playing. I’ve had him for nearly a month and nothing has changed about them, so I think I’ll just leave them alone for now and make sure he has plenty of soft surfaces to sit on and, of course, continue to monitor them.

As far as his weight goes, he doesn’t look overweight… I can feel his ribs and backbone and his haunch muscles though a thin layer of fat, but they have to have some body fat, right? My scale at home isn’t accurate enough to even register him… I weighed myself and then stepped on holding him, and one time it said he was 4 pounds, another time it said 10 pounds and I KNOW that’s not right. He doesn’t feel like even 5 pounds to me… next time I go to the pet store, I’ll bring him and compare him to a 5lb bag of food or something =P

The 2.23 kg was written on his medical records that I got printed otu, so… I’d think my vet’s scale would be accurate, right?

Light Chick – his cage is plenty big for him to hop around in, and I’m working on making a bigger and better one with those wire cubes =)

Sarita – he’s actually getting a 1/4 cup total… 1/8 in the morning and 1/8 in the evening. Is that still too much? I can always up the veggies and cut back on the pellets… He eats a ton of hay, I don’t really measure it, because I just top off his pile in his litter box whenever it needs it with a big handful… I’d say he eats at least 3 handfuls a day

Beka – No, no one said anything to me about him being overweight.

1/4 cup should be fine because he’s young and active and if he eats tons of hay that’s great too. I don’t measure hay either – more like you by the handful :~)

Just based on the photo he doesn’t look overweight to me either. Weight scales really can very from scale to scale but I do imagine that the medical records for him from the vet are surely accurate.

He’s really a gorgeous rabbits – I love the rexes.

I really like this guide for checking if they’re too tubby

How do you know if your bunny is fat? Many house rabbits are, and they are not at all embarrassed by it! Rabbits store fat inside their abdomen, which makes just eyeballing them for love handles ineffective. Run your hands along your rabbit’s side, feeling the rib cage. When you reach the end of the ribs, your should be able to feel a slight inward slope, the waist. Fat bunnies will balloon out instead. Remember that the ribs are palpable in even quite obese rabbits, so don’t let your bunny fool you into more snacks!     Astrid M. Kruse, DVM

Thanks for the info about how to tell if your bunny is overweight. His tummy doesn’t balloon out like they said, but I couldn’t find much of a slope… I’ll keep an eye on him and maybe reduce his pellets a bit until our next vet appointment. =)

How do I post pictures in a thread? I wanted to put some more of Leroy up so you guys could see, and maybe give me an opinion on his weight.

                                            Hi, Barbie!
He looks beautiful. I had a mini rex for 8 years.

But I was told he was a Mini rex, and I began to question the mini part after he got to be 8 lbs. as a full grown adult. Information about breeds can be sketchy at best. If you’re vet says he’s healthy, and he looks it, go by his own physique rather than strict guidelines. I agree with Sarita. Keeping him on a good diet will keep him well built, active and healthy. Even if he turns into a moose.

For some reason people think that all Rexes are Mini Rexes but I think most Rexes are really Standards which are 5 pounds and up.

I think Sarita’s right. But it’s more to love, and all of it velvety soft.

Thanks so much for rescuing a bunny He is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! He looks very healthy as well. If you are looking for something in-expensive and soft for his feeties, try going to a store like Ross or Marshalls and buy some cheap fleece blankets. My bunnies love these, and they don’t chew on it as much as other rugs because there are those little strands of carpets that they like to pull on. As far as pellets, my bunnies get one tablespoon in the morning and one at night. While they don’t need it, I like to feed it because it lets me know if any of them are not feeling well because if their tummy hurts they won’t eat their pellets.

Though most of your questions have been answered, I wanted to at least stop by and say Welcome to the BB Forum and congratulations on your new bunny! He’s beautiful! Another cheap(ish) way to get soft fleese is from a fabric store. I seem t have more pattern and color choices there, and get more bang for the buck there.
