        Hi-

I have had my bunny Samson for almost 4 months now.  He is such a sweetheart!  I am moving soon to a new bigger apartment in which he will have full access to the downstairs floor. I think it would be a great time to introduce another bunny to him so that he can have a friend.   I found a girl online that is looking to get rid of two male bunnies (neither are fixed- yet).  Samson is going in to get fixed on Tuesday and the girl offered to help pay for the other neutering.  Two questions:

        1) Do you think it would be a good idea to bring Samson over to her house and have him meet (separately) her two bunnies? I was thinking of maybe doing it in the bathtub or someplace that they bunnies normally dont roam at her house.  That way he could choose which bunny he liked better?  I am nervous because they will all be unneutered for this meeting.

        2) Do male bunnies have a good success rate of bonding? Or should I continue to look for a female friend for him?

        Thanks!

        Rachel

FYI- The reason she isnt looking for them to go together is because they dont get along. She rescued them from two boxes in a parking lot in the hot hot Texas heat…. poor guys!

I would recommend that you not consider bonding any rabbits until all are altered.

Really the best scenario is a neutered male and a spayed female.

They probably don’t get along with each other because they are not fixed – I would think if they don’t get along with each other at this point there is a huge possibility they will not get along with Samson.

Maybe you can suggest she get them neutered since she has offered that anyway and try to bond them together after that. That is sad that someone left them out in the heat in a box :~(

I dont plan on bonding them until at least a few weeks after they are both neutered I was just more hoping to see if anyone had suggestions on if Male-Male bondning is commonly a success. The girl needs to get rid of these two guys asap and Id hate for them to end up in a shelter or worse.

So does anyone have suggestions on if Male-Male works….

Actually a male/male can work – I just thought she wanted to find a home for one since they weren’t getting along as a pair.

You just have to go through the same stages of bonding as you would for any bonding. Neutral territory – bathtub, car rides, those type of situations and be consistent.

Of course there is always the risk that 2 rabbits may never get along and that is something you will want to think about if you would be willing to keep them separate if it never does work out.

Figured Id update everyone…. We went on our bunny date tonight and it was a success. The bunny that I LOVED was a lop and he absolutely HATED Samson. He chased him around and around trying to seriously bite him. Not chasing to mount just chasing to bite. Even when he was being held he was showing his teeth at poor Sammy. So we knew that was not a good match. Next up was Ivy an albino bunny? They ignored eachother for quite some time until we coaxed them into a smaller space. There was lots of sniffing and then the humpfest began. Ivy usually got top and Samson didnt fight him off. Samson mounted him a few times as well and once he mounted Ivy just sat there and let him hump away. It was quite funny. They also actually did a few mini grooms as well. Even though I wouldnt have picked Ivy as Samson’s new buddy Sammy and him seemed to get along really well. So thats whos coming home with us in a week or two. They both are going in to get fixed next week and then I will let them both recover before reintroducing them. Hopefully they are as nice to eachother next time. YIPPIE!!!!

That sounds very promising! I love the albino rabbits and find them to have really great personalities.

Quick question….After they both are neutered how long would you guys recommend that I wait (for healing) until reintroducing them?

Well I would wait a full month to actually start anything for healing and hormones.
