Well, hearing from you guys I am taking banana off the list of “eveyday” food, and I’m putting in celery, my question is if i give 1/2 a carrot, unlimited hay, and 10 % pellets, how much celery? 1/2 a peice? 1/3 peince? 1/4 peice? And I realize that your supposed to cut them in 1 inch peices because of the strings. And what else can I add into his diet? If I have to.

Cut down ont he amount of carrot as well, carrots are more of a treat than regular food. Give your bun more leafy greens, like romaine lettuce (NOT ICEBURG!) instead.

Celery is not very nutritious for buns, not like dark leafy greens are. I would feed the celery sparingly, maybe a few pieces a week, same thing with carrot, just a little bit as a treat. The main part of his diet, after timothy hay, should be about two cups of leafy green veggies. About one big handful a day.

My buns like romaine, escarole, endive, green-leaf/red-leaf lettuce, collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, watercress, parsley (they prefer that flat-leaf over curly) and cilantro. I feed them 3 or 4 of these every day for a week, then the next week I will pick some new greens. If your local grocery store has a good produce selection, you should be able to find all of these at reasonable prices and very fresh.

Well all that they really have is cilantro, but I’m giving him celery and spinach everyday now and everyother day I give him carrots and everyonce in a while I give him about 2-3 grapes, or 1/3 of a banana or little slice of a orange.

I wanted to add Kale to the list but only a half pc a day — it is high in calcuim and the buns and start to leave white powder-ee deposits around from it. My buns love it but again I only give them half of a decent size pc per day. It’s sorta a blue-ish green leaf with thick stalk/stem and is curly like it’s wearing a ruffled dress or skirt –not too expensive usually either.

hehe okay i’ll try to get my dad to buy it or have him use my money on it, how much is it? Like if i wanted it to last for 1 or 2 weeks how much $$?

I’m not sure about how expensive kale is, since I haven’t tried that yet with Leroy, but I know that Leroy loves loves loves parsley and cilantro, also romaine lettuce. Bunches of cilantro and parsely are only $0.75 each at my grocery store, and two bunches will last him about five days – if that’s all I feed (though I try to diversify his selection). I usually give him some celery, as well. I know it’s not very nutritious, but I can’t help it! I love the way Leroy’s breath smells so sweet after he eats celery. He’s a lover, and will come over and lick me, and, if I’m lying on the floor, he’ll come and sit nose to nose with me. =)

What do you all think about feeding tomatoes and cucumber? I know the leaves and stems of tomatoes are bad, but what about the fruit/vegetable itself? Is it high in sugar, so should I limit how much I give? What about cucumber – I saw on one list that I can feed him the cucumber peel… what about a slice of it instead of the peel?

Ohh, thats great hopefully it’s that cheap at my grocery store. I used to give tomatoes to my rabbit but found out its not good for him, and I used to give him a little cucumber to but stopped.

Tomatoes are a fruit (technically) and it is safe to feed the flesh (no seeds, vines or leaves). It has to be in a very small limited amount, but many bunnies (mine included) won’t touch it. I’m sure wild rabbits eat tomatoes in gardens that they might venture into, but mine just don’t like the taste. ;o)

Hmm ok, maybe I’ll try a small piece. But if Leroy does like tomatoes, should I feed them sparingly, like a treat, since they’re a fruit?

I think tomatoes are more like a treat type food. It seems like the best vegetables for rabbits are green leafy type vegetables. Tomatoes have lots of vitamins that I think would be beneficial to a rabbit and alot of people feed their rabbits those little tomatoes which are usually sweeter – you probably want to cut it up and just squeeze out the seeds (don’t need to be precise though). I think the fragrance of the tomato will entice them to try it so cutting it open will help with that.

I don’t think either you can really compare a wild rabbit’s diet to a domestic rabbit either.

Pepper likes tomato but I don’t so she rarely gets any.  I’d think it’s kind of sugary so only sparingly.  She loves cucumber,

Things I feed include cilantro, kale, romaine green or red lettuce, carrot tops, celery (cut smallish so there arent any long strings), spinach, mixed salad greens, cucumber, green pepper (occasionally), etc.  I also have a container garden on my deck planted with her in mind, so she gets fresh things like greens, spinach, carrot tops, mint, dill, thyme, rosemary, lemon balm, dandelions, and marigold flowers.

Yeah, I feed a lot of leafy greens too, I’m just trying to find things to make his diet less boring and to make sure he’s getting all the nutrients he needs. Someone just gave me a baby sage plant, and I’ve been growing that; once it’s big enough, can I feed Leroy sage leaves?

My rabbits also love mint, basil and dill. I sometimes feed arugula too – they don’t love arugula but they will eat it.

Oh, arugula is ok? Hmmm wish I knew that a couple weeks ago… my roommate bought a spinach/arugula mix and wasn’t going to eat it all before it spoiled so she said I could give it to Leroy if I wanted (it hadn’t spoiled at the time, she just wasn’t eating it fast enough on her own)… Well, since I knew spinach was ok, but I wasn’t sure about the arugula, I sat there and picked out only the spinach, and after all that work, Leroy decided he didn’t like spinach and wouldn’t eat it anyway, lol. My parents have some mint plants at their house, so next time I visit, I’m going to make sure to grab some for my bun =P

Well, he doesn’t always eat new foods from my hand, so then I just set it in front of him and leave him alone for a bit. He usually will give in and try it. That’s what I did with the spinach. The first time I tried giving him spinach, he ate one leaf and left the rest of it. After a couple hours, it was starting to get wilted and yucky so I took it out. I tried again the next day and I mixed the spinach leaves in with some romaine lettuce and bits of celery, which he loves. He ate around the spinach and finally when everything else was gone, he started on the spinach leaves but spit them out =P So I’m fairly confident that he doesn’t like spinach lol

I think the list of greens Beka mentioned are particularly good.
