So here’s a funny story to tell your grandkids…or just your bunnies maybe….

Mind you, this occured about a week ago, when we were first having to do Mimzy’s Pen-G shots (I remember it had to have been the night before-because after this happened I was worrying how I was going to carry Mimzy to the couch without dropping him from pain) I had been walking through the front room of my house headed for the computer. Not a really fast clip, just my normal rushing. Anyway, one of our snow boots (the kind with the steel heels and toes, apparently) was a little too far out in the lane and WHAM! Smacked it good with my left small toe. (many expletives deleted)  I was hopping, needless to say and yet a little while later it didn’t feel too bad so I figured I’d just given it a good stub.

Well, after being online for about an hour, I try to stand up and HOLEYMOLEY….could hardly put my foot on the ground, much less give it weight. I looked down at it and sure enough…VERY purty…all sorts of lovely colors and it was swelling. (To date it is still actually black and blue all the way down to the middle of the top of my foot and the toe area is bruised with red color-you know how a bad bruise gets?) Well, the hubby has broken enough bones in his lifetime, so I called him up at work and asked him what to do about it. He said the doc wouldn’t be able to fix it, so I should just stay off it.

Despite trying to ‘stay off it’ it is stil painful and looks like I got hit with a baseball bat. Yah….so I just now looked up how long you’re supposed to ‘stay off it’….three to four weeks??

Not possible. I have too much to do each day. Taping it up is not an option, it just makes the pain worse. Shoes of any kind are pure hell. I take some pretty strong meds for daily pain and if I skip even one, that little bugger is excrutiating. I’m beginning to wonder if I should’ve seeen a doctor already (duh!) but now the point seems moot.

It should heal on it’s own…right? 0_o I can hobble around okay…sort of, but it’s not always fun. I don’t want to have surgery on it or anything, but I suppose if I don’t cut it some slack it’s never going to heal and I have to wonder if I am tearing anything up in there with sharp broken bone edges? I would think I’d be in significantly more pain if so, though.

So my big question is…what do any of you do when you’re gimped up but still have to take care of things (like bunnies)?

Sorry this has turned into more of an opinion poll than a real post, but I’m just curious how y’all manage?

My husband did something like this. Before we were married when he was in one of his Marine Corps school/training things he “stubbed” his pinky toe and he went to the doc and they put a needle through his toenail (slowly twisted it in…he told me that you could do it yourself EEK!) to release the pressure and blood from his toe (he said it didnt hurt) from the swelling, but said there was nothing that they could do more than that besides tape it/brace it. They said it was just a fracture, but his toe was swollen and all sorts of colors. His toenail eventually fell off and re-grew.

I broke my pinky toe like twice in a row in middle school. You walk on it but walk with your foot at a 90 degree angle from how you usually hold it. This way you don’t bend the toe and hurt it. It’s fine now but not quite as bendy as the other one

I would ice it to try to relieve some of the pain and swelling.  I have never had any luck with taping toes or anything involving my feet- your skin moves so much in response to walking that you can go to peel the tape off and find out the tape preventing the skin from moving so the underside of the tape is lined with your skin that is no longer attached.  And that just makes everything hurt more!

For support you could try using Vet Wrap or on the human market I believe it is called CoBan.  It does not stick to your toe- but will stick to itself and can provide some support and maybe relief.

Yikes! Maybe you should go to the doctor, just in case? I’m such a wuss when it comes to things like that.

I’ve broken the same pinky toe twice and it just healed on its own. But I don’t think it was ever as painful as what you’re describing! I would definitely ice it, and go to the doctor in a few days if you still can’t walk on it. Good luck!

I know that there’s nothing much you do for a broken toe, but I’m just concerned that it didn’t stop with the toe bone. There are so many bones in the foot that I’m worried it broke another bone attached to the toe. In that case, you’d probably need a Dr. to at least xray the damage and see how badly you’ve hurt it.

That said, why don’t you buy (or find) a cheap pair of sneakers like Keds used to be. I think Kmart type stores have them for about 5 bucks. The canvas type. Then cut a hole around your little toe so it isn’t being touched. It’s one way to keep your foot covered and supported and anything from touching the sore toe.

{{{{{{Healing vibes for MM’s Pinky Boo Boo}}}}}}}}}}}}   Tell Mimzy to kiss it, make it better.

I’d also be concerned that you managed to whack more than just your little toe. I broke my foot a few years ago by trying to step over a baby gate (up to keep the bunnies from leaving the room) and tripping over it instead. Broke a little bone along the outside of my foot and ended up in a cast for something like 10 or 12 weeks. Believe me, I remember the pain from that very well. Definitely go see the doctor in case more than just the toe is affected, because if it is you could be making things much worse by leaving it untreated.

Wow – I have never broken a bone, which is amazing cause I’m a total klutz.
                        I cant imagine the pain.

Awes! You guys are all so sweet! Thank you! (and your bunnies too!)
Pam…lolz. I can just see Mimzy kissing my toe. And then clamping down on it with a big nip or digging at it. lmao!

That was something I was worried about, that other bones had been cracked as well, but then I shouldn’t be able to move any of those toes or the foot bone itself, should I?

0_o *gulp!* Man, those Marines! This is just like…a fun afternoon jaunt to the VA doc for them isn’t it? I can’t tell you how many painful things I’ve watched my own hubby go through (USMC from 79-honorably discharged on medical) and I just wonder sometimes if that hospital is a care facility or a torture chamber! 0_o lolz… OO-rah! ^_^

haha I know LOL! Those Marines….oorah!  I asked him last night what they did for his toe when I read our post and he was like ‘oh she can just do it herself, it won’t hurt!’ I was like are you kidding me!

When I broke my foot I could still move the toes and the foot. It just hurt a hell of a lot. I broke the 5th metatarsal, I’m attaching a photo of an xray (not mine) showing the location.

Immediately after I broke it I thought omg I think I broke my foot, well no I can’t have I can still move everything I just sprained it but man it hurts. Then I decided that I really should get it checked out, but being my right foot there was no way I was driving. Scooter was at work, had just gone into class to teach so there was no way he was coming home soon so I had to wait. So while I waited I thought well if it IS broken then there’s a bunch of stuff that won’t be easy to do with a cast, so I had a nice shower and did some laundry (laundry room was in the basement so it meant going up and down the stairs with a foot that turned out to be broken).

I not only broke the bone, but put a 3mm gap in it which is why it took so long to heal. Go get it x-rayed and checked out, please.

I had a toe issue when I was marching in drum & bugle corps. They told me I had to stay off of it too…and I had a show to preform in! I was in the middle of no where in the Midwest, I mean we wake up and don’t even know which state we are in anymore since we drive in tour buses overnight. It was going to be very hard to keep it clean to even try to get it to heal (ingrown toenail). We went to the Emergency room and had it removed. I just had to get it over with. I couldn’t soak it 4 times a day like they told me to. I stayed off of it for about 4 days then had to join back in. I also got sick from the vicodin; a nasty head cold. I was a mess. It was very painful so I understand where you are coming from. You just gotta do your best and I found a way to walk without putting pressure on it so I could still get around. It was especially bad with the drum corps because when you march it is all about foot technique and posture, so for the 10 minute show I was just in complete pain but…I think it was worth it. Also, I wore soft fuzzy slippers and flip flops. Good thing its summer right now! I hope it starts to feel better for you soon.

Soo, did you ever get it checked out? I think you should, even though a cast is no fun.
Hows it feeling now, any better?

Ouch!!! I am pretty much an old rookie when it comes to broken toes. My left pinky toe has been broken so many times I lost count, it’s permanently weird looking due to all the trauma. It’s part of the territory when you work with horses. My former horse was a cantakerous old race horse and she did it on purpose, I swear!!! And trying to get her off your toe was next to impossible. She was all like “What? Why are you pushing and yelling at me?”

Broke my little fingers several times too. I count myself lucky though. Never broken anything else. Toes and fingers are nothing compared to say a leg or a couple of ribs.

I’ve yet to be too gimped out to take care of my buns (knocking on wood…) but I worry about that. Their daddy could take care of them but it just wouldn’t be the same. No baby talk or nose kisses with the supper…lol

I’m doing much better actually, thank you all!
I’ve been rubbing (get this) Bengay on my foot for the last few days and the bruise is disappearing exponentially. I don’t know why that works, but I’ve used it on bruises before and it really seems to do the trick to break them up and move them out. (A big thing for me, since I’m taking medication that tends to clot the extremities.)
I can stretch the toes without pain now. I still don’t feel comfortable in a shoe, but that will get better. It’s not nearly and painful as it was the day I made this post.
It’s good it’s doing better, because the hubby and son are going camping here soon and I would be without a chauffeur to the hospital! ^_^
Thanks for all your healing vibes and feel better Joshua!
