So, I don’t remember, is getting hay from a barn/farm good? I was looking around for local barns that I could buy hay from. Is horse hay just as good as the bunny hay? I wanted to buy a lot of hay cheap because Thistle is such a crazy hay eater.

I think they only way you can know is to check the quality by seeing it. I’ve never had an success with this but they don’t grow any hay in Texas.

Sometimes you can pay less for bunny hay if you order a bale online, then store it well.

I think the horse hay is OK, but the bunny hay may be processed a bit more carefully and taste better to them. If you find barn hay, maybe you could take a sample to see if you bunny likes it before buying a bale.

I used to own horses, and the bales of hay that are “horse quality” are usually Timothy and should be about the same as the stuff you buy specifically for bunnies. As long as you’re not buying “cow quality” hay, you should be fine. Cow hay is not as thoroughly processed as horse hay and has more non-hay material- stuff like twigs, leaves, rocks, and other things that you wouldn’t want your bun to get into.

Yea, I will look at the hay to see if it looks good quality, I mean you can’t beat the price at three dollars a bale! What do you mean buy a bale online Rabbitpam? Where could I do that?

The place I was looking at sounded good. I can’t remember exactly what the advertisement said.

Oh and is it better to get fist cut second cut or third cut?

Second cut and third cut are progressively softer, so older bunnies or those with problems with their teeth prefer those.
I’m thinking that you might do very well with their second cut hay.

The kind you can order varies, but I think I immediately thought of these Mini Bales BB sells. She said we shouldn’t push things from her store, but this always looked to me like a great option – not the huge size of a regular bale, but plenty to last longer than the bags in stores. It’s not the same reduced price as in your ad, obviously.

Mini Hay Bale – 1st Cut TIMOTHY
A super compressed mini hay bale of fresh Timothy, (1st cut – highest fiber).
                      $7.25

Hmmm. I thought I saw some other rabbit food sites that sold bales, but I just checked my saved favorites and it wasn’t where I thought it was. Maybe someone else has a good source.

I like the sound of your ad, and the fact that they have a variety to choose from. I think it’s worth checking out.

My only concern about that ad is that the bale is a mixture of grass and alfalfa (legume) hay. If you can find some place that has pure timothy hay, that would be your best bet. i think most buns prefer the second cutting. I agree, if you have a place to store it safely, you CANNOT beat that price!

Ok so I bought the hay and it looks good! But it has some flowers in it, weeds. I know clover is ok but is trefoil, vetch and Queenannes lace ok? The hay even had nutrition test done on it.
                              Moisture <12%
                              Crude Protien >9%
                              Crude Fiber <30%
                              Crude Fat w/ oil >2.5%

                              Calcium>0.5%

Don’t pay attention to the fat content because they added oil to the product they tested, (they made a special compressed hay and added oil to it. I might get it for the bunnies as a treat sometime.) but the same hay was used for the product so everything else should be accurate.

The hay is nice and green and smells nice, but do you think a couple of weeds in it are ok?

The oil thing is odd – but maybe with larger compressed bales that is a standard. I don’t know about the rest since with smaller bales and packaging, that stuff is more easily filtered out.

OH, and actually there is another thread you started concerning this https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aff/2/aft/106271/afv/topic/afnp/123204/Default.aspx

that may help keep answers focused to one place.
