So Nova is a little absurdly picky when it comes to treats. She really only eats the old oxbow papaya tablets (haven’t tried the new ones, but I haven’t run out of the old ones yet). She will actually take them from my hand. This is the only thing she will eat from my hand. I’ve tried pellets and greens, but those are things that in her mind are only safe to eat from a bowl, on the ground, in it’s normal place. Due to this, training her with any speed is basically impossible because she only gets one tablet a day (I might be parinoid about giving her too much sugar?). All I’ve really taught her is how to stand on her hind legs, and part of that is so she doesn’t bite me when she takes the treat. Clicker training doesn’t work because I can’t provide any reward. Normally I’m pretty good with training dogs and even cats, but I am able to train them with their dinner, and I’m not afraid of them like I am this rabbit (yes, I’ll admit it, she scares me a little lot). She is much better about just being pet right now because I haven’t been picking her up on a daily basis to go out on the lawn. So she trusts me right now as much as she ever does (will?).

Anyways, during my radiation my mom got me these great little organic lollypops. They are supposed to be sour, but they aren’t really. The ingredients are: Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Tapioca Syrup, and/or Organic Rice Syrup, Citric Acid (from beet sugar). The flavors vary, but may include: Black Carrots, Apple, Wheat Grass, Black Currant, Carrot, and Pumpkin.

If Nova likes the flavor could I let her lick one as a reward? It seems perfect as it’s on a stick (keeps my fingers safe!), and the ingredients seem safe to me, but I wanted to check here first.

The suckers are made with different forms of sugar it seems- but a lick here and there should not hurt her at all.  I am guilty of letting my bunnies have a lick of a popsicle if they seem interested- and they usually are.  Schroeder even took a small bite of a strawberry fruit floe (fruit bar) from Trader Joes and chewed it upped and looked for more.

I agree that a lick here and there of that cannot be harmful.

            What flavor is Black Carrots?

the evaporated cane juice would be the substitute for sugar.
              SCIENCE LESSON OF THE DAY:
cane juice is the main ingredient in sugar, so when it is evaporated, it takes out some of the more harmful chemicals that you find in basic sugar. so when evaporated cane juice is used instead of sugar, you are getting a basically watered down version of the taste of sugar.

Well she doesn’t like them anyways! Poo on her. Black carrot must be something to make one of the other actual flavors, as there are only 4 (Apple, Strawberry, Grape, and Cherry). That is really interesting about the cane juice being better, I just assumed it was sugar! Well I tried the Strawberry one today, maybe I’ll try another one. I even put a papaya tablet on the sucker and she ate it off it and left the rest of it untouched. She just doesn’t trust me at all. She gets excited when I shake the tablet container and runs out to see me, but after she gets one she runs right back into hiding. Now mind you, she doesn’t hide from me all the time, only when I sit down near her cage and look at her. I’ll admit, I’ve been kind of neglecting giving her proper attention (but not care!) for a while with school being rough last semester and then my whole thyroid thing. She always has stuff to do (toys to shred, hay to eat/dig), but she doesn’t get a lot of out time, or time with me. I’m hoping that will change soon as I’m rearranging my room to make it easier to clean/more bunny friendly. Gah, I guess that I just need to give it more time, take things slow, and maybe she’ll start to eat things like her greens from my hands. The important thing is that I keep trying, and that I can keep trying now that my life is slowly going back to being normal!
