hi, guys, something made confused and i would like to listening to your advice.  there is an old saying in my country that rabbits can only eat dry veggies, any water drops left would cause death. i’m not sure about it and evidences seem to be controversial. some people said that’s for sure as they suffured that kind of loss. while, i also read that dampen veggies are effective way to cool bunnies down in hot summer. is the quality of water the key factor? if so, i would wash greens next time with cooled boiled water , thus not to wait several hours till all water evaporate. Thank you all!

I’ve never heard this – it must be an old wives tale where you live or just a coincidence that the rabbit passed away because obviously the real reason is unknown when they gave them wet vegetables.

I honestly don’t worry about the water from my tap – it has so many chemicals it would kill anything.

I don’t believe either that damp veggies are going to cool rabbit in the hot summer either just possibly keep them hydrated. The best of course is always clean fresh water in their bowl.

Lancy I thnk  you live in china according to your other post.    No wet veggies won’t kill the bunny.   Unless the water is really  bad.  A good way to keep bunny cool in hot hot weather  is a frozen water bottle that they can be near or lie against.   Also a bunny turban a cold towel around their ears.

Buns are suceptible to heat related deaths.  That may be what killed their bunnies not the water.  I agree wet vegies cause death sounds like an old wives tale.

            Hope this helps

I’m guessing like Sarita said, it’s just an old wives tale b/c of a bunny that passed to something entirely unrelated.

If the concern is the water, you could maybe use filtered or bottled water? I also drink from the tap (and water my bunnies from the tap), where I live in the US, our water quality is rather good.

I’ve heard from other random sources that it is (or was) believed that rabbits either don’t need water, or need a very, very tiny amount. My buns drink an average amount, I’d say at least 4-6oz a day, more if they eat a lot of hay.

That’s really help, thanks a lot! i just can’t imagine dringking from bottle or veggies has any difference.
my Fluffy, a 3-4lb lop, drinks as much as 500nl water daily, besides a cup of greens. i think he must be a dolphin in his last generation.
i also used frozen water bottles and ” ice bags ” (which were said to containe polymer and the cold would last longer ), but not very often. i live by the sea in the north, so hot summer and cold winter are rare. there are around 1 or 2weeks when the temperature outdoor reaches over 86, and over 79 indoor.
one thing would puzzle is my bun accepts boiled tap water, mineral water but filtered or distiled water. He won’t drink any drop.

Sometimes bunnies can develop tastes for certain things and be picky it sounds like you have a water snob bunny! But really, your bunny can drink whatever water you can drink as far as I know. That is so odd that people think that the bunnies can’t have water….I would think it would kill them to NOT have water.

I came across something like this just last week. A site that did not promote feeding vegetables (& wet food) to rabbits… I found it odd and it can be confusing with all the information about. I think the thing you really need to be careful with is storing dry vegetables. They perish easily and may grow harmful bacteria if left overly moist. Sometimes stores spray the produce to make it look appealing but it really lessens the life of the produce unless you dry it of before you refrigerate.
Personally, I think it’s a good idea to wash the vegetable just before you give them to the rabbits, I usually then give it to them wet to increase their water intake. If you have concerns about water quality, play it safe and wash anything in the cooled boiled water as you suggested.

Very often it’s recommended to wash the veggies if a bunny is not drinking enough water to get hydrated, so it’s not true that it’s harmful. However, it may have a basis in fact if the water used was not good to drink, and a bunny might have died long before a human would.

I like the idea of giving boiled water. I’d suggest boiling a lot and keeping a large pitcher of it in your fridge. That way, it will be handy, and you might need to switch to it yourself on occasion.

I would not use the cold packs, because I am concerned that bunny might take a bite out of it. Just one puncture and the stuff inside could ooze out. That would be harmful, but a frozen, plain plastic bottle, like a coke with the labels peeled off, works just as well.

I keep my bunnies cool by filling a metal dog dish full of ice and about half with water then they can lay up against it or drink it. Plus I have a lil desk fan running all afternoon.

i fed Fluffy wet veggies last night and he was doing well this morning. i’m going to post this in my local forums, since most people still believe the old wives tale, even those experienced. the hotest day in this summer came yesterday, 88 outside and 80 inside. i froze 2 bottles of water for Fluffy. my wife was kidding that bottles of Zero Coke would be better as Fluffy’s a little big over-weight. but he did not care about heat, left the bottles along, just chasing food and treats.
i buy veggies daily, for my bun and turtles and tortoises, but don’t need to store. they would eat up anything very quickly and bite me if still hungery.
