I discovered tiny little spider like bugs crawling around a bit of hay on the floor.  They are reddish brown and bit smaller than a  poppy seed.  I think they might be spider mites…these don’t seem to be parasitic.  Any clues to what else they may be or where they come from?  I thought perhaps they have come in with the hay.

Hay can contain live mites even if stored for up to a year. Not sure if those are what you’re seeing.

I’m not sure if they can harm a bun, (I wouldn’t think they could) but I had spider mites on my houseplants recently, and they were white, a little smaller than a poppy seed and had feather-like webs around leaves near eachother…do you see any webbing on the hay? I would throw out the hay they were on and inspect it carefully before feeding it to the buns.

Ok… you got me interested, Jersey! I did some looking up. Spider mites have a reddish appearance and are a common pest on Timothy hay. They live on plant juices, not on blood. They will not infest your rabbits. I wonder if there is a way to get them out of your hay, if this is their origin. –do you have indoor plants?

No plants – they never last with me. I’ve yet to check the hay. I’ve had it for couple months but not noticed anything before. Rabbits seem fine too, no mad scratching etc.
