Hi everyone, i’m new here. I am going to get a house rabbit soon,

its been quite a few years since i last had a rabbit, and a lot has changed so i’m just trying to gather as much information as i can before i bring my new rabbit home.

My last rabbit used to be really selective when eating, and would only pick out the bits that she liked, so i was thinking of feeding my new rabbit the Excel pellet food. Is this a popular type of food?

Any advice on which type of food would be a great help.

        Thank you

Welcome here! That’s great you’re thinking of getting another bunny!

I have never heard of the Excel pellets. Most of us here recommend Oxbow, American Pet Diner, or Zupreem brands. You want a pellet without any extra bits (no seeds, nuts, cereal pieces, dried veggies). Just a plain timothy-based pellet.

Binkybunny has diet info. Here is the page: https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/Diet/tabid/60/Default.aspx

These are the nutritional values you want to look for when choosing a pellet:

Recommended Nutritional Value: (Compare these against yours)
          Fiber 18% minimum (20 -25% best)
          Fat 1 – 2% max,
          Protein 12 – 14% max (long-haired breeds,angoras, need higher)
          Calcium 1% max

Edited:  I tried to do a search for Excel rabbit food and it’s bringing up “Burgess Supa Rabbit Excel”.  It looks like it may be a UK brand.  Is this where you are located?  If you are out of the US, I don’t think the brands I recommended will be available for you.

That’s the website… I do not see nutritional info for the different types of food.

I second the vote for Oxbow, though when I lived in New England I used a brand called Big Red Rabbit Food. Both had good nutrition, just plain timothy hay pellets and not added things mixed in.

Be sure to keep us posted on who ends up being your new bunny. We love pictures.

That’s all I could find as well on this brand. Are you in the UK?

Assuming you are in the UK, you might find this link useful.  It’s shows a nutritional chart of various rabbit feeds including Burgess Supa Rabbit Excel.    http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/care/rabbitfood.asp

Watch for fat content in feeds along with fibre and protein.  For example, a feed listed in the chart I mentioned shows a great fibre content of 27%, protein 14%.  Great – but……….the oil content is 7.60%.  You really want to keep it under 3%.

I learned somethign new today  I didn’t know about the oil content.   Worth me looking at the bag of food to see.

I have zupreem so I am sure it is ok.
