Reese has started shedding for the first time since I’ve had him, almost 3 months.

I don’t generally brush him but is this something I need to start doing? It’s summer, so I suppose the shedding is normal?

        Thanks!

they shed about 4 times a year   2 big sheds.  This is the first shed and yes it helps very very much to brush her.  That keeps her from ingesting all that hair and having string of pearl poops.

Brushing daily right now is a good thing to be doing for her.

Brushing a couple of times a day really helps as BT said. Also, there are some good combs you can get for it too. You can even dampen your hands and run them down her body so the fur sticks to your hands. The shed could go on for a couple of weeks at least, so don’t worry and keep vacuuming the house and cage.

I am an awful bunny brusher. I try to do it twice a week during non-shed times, but I tend to forget. When they are shedding, I have to brush everyday. The volume of fur is unbelievable with my lop. With my mini rex, it’s not as bad. The best way I have found to brush is to do it on a high counter (bathroom or kitchen) but make sure the bun is blocked and cannot jump down.

In months with weather permitting I brush my bunnies (and cat which are indoors only) on our upper deck.  I have my husband out with me so I can keep a hand/or comb on the pet at all times.

My bunnies fur especially makes a huge mess-  it is very light, fine and floats off in clouds when they are shedding.  I like being able to groom them outside since that is less mess in the house to vacuum up and the bunnies are more out of “their element” and they tend to be more cooperative.  For the bunnies I mainly use a Zoom Groom and a Hairbuster Comb- they don’t seem to like the Furminator- so I use it on my cats that DO like it.  Oh, and I use my hands a lot too- I “pluck”/pull the problem areas (areas of thick fur) and even if I don’t get clumps I can get a small pile of loose hair out.  Cotton seems to settle down and enjoy it with some tooth purrs towards the end, and Schroeder had his first outdoor grooming about 2 weeks ago and he seemed to like it also.

It took Schroeder about 6 months to grow in a soft, thick, beautiful haircoat- when I adopted him in January his coat was thinner and harsher due to not having top notch nutrition I am sure.

I did try out a new brush that I bought when I was in Chicago- an Umbra brand dog brush- it is rubbery- less so than the Zoom Groom and the teeth are gentler nubs- the bunnies seem to prefer it over the Zoom Groom- but it does not hold much of the bunny hair so it makes more of a cloudy mess of hair.  But when they are shedding- I don’t care as long as I have them outside!  (The following link is NOT where I bought it from- only a website that shows the same brush).

I’m not as good of a bunny brusher as I should be – but fortunately my husband is an excellent “plucker” – as soon as my bunnies get a little bit of loose fur he will pluck all their loose fur of for hours! When I notice one is starting to shed I will brush every couple days, and also do the pat down with damp hands as often as possible.
