I have to say, we’ve had some of the hottest days I’ve experienced since moving here near Fairbanks. Broke the record for the high yesterday with 91 degrees! (I liken it to about 110 in the shade in California…not to mention the humidity and heat index on top of that!) It was the most miserable day I have had to deal with in a long time. Luckily the inversion sucked in some t-storms last night and it finally cooled off a bit, but the house still feels like a pressure cooker and I don’t like how that must be affecting the buns.

For example, during the hottest days this week, Mimzy tended to sleep very deeply, with one eye open on his side and twitching his face a lot. I would have to really make a lot of noise to wake him and at first was terrified the heat had caused him to stroke or he was having a seizure. But he is all good today and, albeit still a bit too warm for him, he still manages to get up and get uppity for his favortie treat foods. (Thank God, I’d be seriously worried if not!)

Besides my tower fan, which oscillates and was going all night last night, plus multiple freeze bottles and the window wide open for as long as we all could take it without Mimzy starting to sneeze, I am running out of ideas for keeping them cool and want to be sure I shouldn’t be worried about Mimzy’s comatose naps. Wet towels are not really an option as all three bunnies like to eat fabric and I find more holes in anything that comes near them, including Fiver’s lovely pet mattresses. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what lengths you go to when keeping your bunnies cool?

Do you have any old tiles about? I read recently that you can pop them in the freezer then put them on base of cage. Even slate or pavers could work. With pavers, you could just poor ice cold water over then and the stone should soak it up.

I’m also a big believer in the temporary cool down of the ear turban.
You take a cold washcloth that’s only a bit damp, wrpa it around both ears so it touches both outside and inside the ears, and let it stay on for several minutes. Spockie used to hand out with it on for quite a few minutes. Eventually they may shake it off, then take it away before nibbling commences.
It seems the insides of the ears in particular are sensitive to getting their bodies to cool down. Kind of like the back of our necks. Maybe he’ll take a calmer nap afterwards.

Ear turban? I will have to try that sometime.

Ear turban is a very good idea. Their ears are so huge that has to help so much. And the freezing of tiles is also a good idea. If you haven’t got any tiles, go buy a few from the store. They’re cheap. Just not if you want to do your whole floor =) You can touch them all and pick the one that feels the coldest to take home, since different stones/compilations radiate heat differently

You can buy cooling pads and stuff that stays “cold.” Then if the bunny tends to chew it or is freaked out by the chill you could just lay tiles on top to make it more natural.

                chillo seems good!

Thanks guys! Yeah, I had tiles for the buns to sleep on, but Mimzy will actually grasp them in his teeth and try to shatter them on the pen wall. I’m scared he’ll break his jaw on it. >.<
I looked up the first cooling mat, sounds like a good idea, but I may try a little more searching to find one I like. If nothing else, maybe I should take the bunny beds I put down for Fiver and Pip and stick them in the freezer for the night and use them during the day. (I have more than a few, so I can rotate them out.) Even that would be better than nothing.
I’d forgotten the ear turban. ^_^ How much you guys want to bet that it’ll take Mimzy exactly 5 seconds to fling it across the room? xD Worth a try though, thanks!

Well my rabbits are generally “comatose” when they fall into a deep sleep. I’m not exactly if the body heats up or cools down when you are asleep but I know I usually wake up colder when I wake from a deep sleep. It might be beneficial though if he is getting a deep sleep as his body is rejuvenating itself. I’ve read when animals hibernate their body temperatures cool down so maybe this is cooling him down but obviously rabbits are not hibernating animals. Also are your days shorter now? That could be why he’s getting deeper sleeps as well.

Mimzy + turban – It forms a funny image in my head! Can you put things under the plastic cage bottom also? Surely the coolness would transfer thru the base.

Now I’m thinking of one bunny cage – on ice, thankyou.

For humans, we do cool down during sleep I think.  Good point Sarita.

OH my Mimzy tries to break the tiles.  Goodness what a charactor.

I didn’t know alaska got humid.  I thought Alaska was all snow and ice. You do have hot weather there after all.

Mimzy sounds like a very particular bun.  Likes things a certain way.

How’s Mimzy today? did any of our suggestions work? Did Mimzy borrow the keys and drive to the nearest hotel with AC?

I don’t know if it helps any, but Little-Bit sleeps deeply and twitches all the time. I’m pretty sure that in itself is normal, like REM sleep.

                              Thanks guys.
Well we had a brief respite…then today it got really hot again. I had the fan going so much yesterday that Mimzy got up all boogery this morning, so I made an appointment for Saturday for him to see his vet. (She’s out of state till then.) I have to keep to ways to cool him that don’t cause him to be in a drafty situation…so I thought maybe his ‘hanky’ would make a perfect turban, Pam. (He doesn’t like my heavy washcloths.)
I guess we’re going to do the amoxi shots. It’s the only thing that will supposedly knock out his branhamella. And while I’m there I can be sure the heat is not affecting him adversely. But yeah, I reckon it’s most likely just a reaction to the temperature. I know all I want to do is sleep all day too! ~_~ zzzzzz…..
This has been a really hot July…not normal for us up here!
