Hi Everyone!  BunFest 2009 is back!  If you live in the southern Ontario area (or just feel like taking the trip!), you are all invited to BunFest 2009!  We had tons of fun last year and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever!  Come bun, come all!

          I WANT TO GO!

But it is a three hour drive from my house! Maybe I can convince my mom…

*If we leave at eight we would arrive at eleven and we could leave at four and get back at seven*

          PERFECT lol.

Anyone think a three hour car trip is too long for a bun?

Moonlight, it depends on the bun’s personality. Some don’t care at all, others hate the car so much it makes their owners wonder if they will live until the destination is reached! Most fall in between. If your bunny doesn’t like going to the vet and/or being carried then I would suggest maybe going without your bunny.

Moonlight, we should carpool! I’d like to go too. I don’t have a bunny but… maybe after BunFest I will!

aw, that looks like so much fun!  Too bad I am so far away!  Unless your bunny is used to traveling long distances I would not take your bunny with you- it is not worth the stress and disruption to feeding and elimination schedule.  Plus that will free you up to do other things after traveling so far- going shopping, eating at a restaurant that you don’t have in your area, etc.  You are more likely to convince your parents to go if you can do other fun family activities also.

I know that I have seen events or fundraisers in Chicago (2 1/2 hours away) and near Detroit (3 1/2 hours) and I have not considered taking my bunnies.  I don’t think they would be happy and I would not want them to be stressed for no reason except my own vanity of wanting to show them off and enjoy them with other rabbit lovers.  If it was closer- I would consider it.  But my husband would not be very happy about driving HOURS to go to something that I want to do (rabbit related) and he does not even get to go out to eat or anything fun that he wants to do.  You can’t leave the bunnies in the car- and you can’t sneak them into a restaurant.

Anyone who goes should wear a tag on them that says BINKY BUNNY so that we can recognize each other lol.

Funny you should mention that! We will have nametags at the door where you can let others know if you belong to another rabbit community (like binkybunny) so you can all find each other more easily….

And yes it’s probably not best you bring a rabbit from such a long distance, but if you humans are up for the trip, please do come pay us a visit! Last year we actually had a lady and her rabbit come from Halifax! They flew on a plane and made a vacation out of it!

We had a BunFest camping trip last week in Upstate NY. Pepper and I drove in 800 miles to attend, and she was a trouper!  Like me she likes BEING other places but not co much with the GETTING there.   I fastened a NIC pen to the seatbelt arrangements so she had her carrier, litterbox and water available while we were traveling.  I made sure that the car was nice and cool, and even covered part of the pen with a sheet when it looked a bit sunny and warm.  I also switched the fader on the audio system entirely to the front so that it wasn’t too noisy back there.  The first night we drove as far as Rochester NY, where we spent the night in a Microtel, she slept on my bed and ate about half of the HBO guide!

While we were camping, she spent days in a pen  – each bun or pair had their own – and she loved being fussed over by all the visitors.  At night she stayed with me in a NIC cage in my tent.  During a huge thunderstorm I was singing to her so she woudn’t be scared, and she FLOPPED!  I’ve only ever seen her flop once before in the 3 years I had her!

There were some pokings and scufflings through the pens – I had put a double layer of pen between her and the other buns for a reason!  But one of the other people changed that, and his doe went after Pepper through the bars.  While he was scolding his bun, Pepper made it up and over her 36″ X-pen and headed straight for her.  She may not have started things but she sure as hell was going to finish them!  He got his boot between them and yelled for help (I was at the grocery store) and they were separated with no injuries.

Heading back, when we stopped, I took her in her carrier into the rest stops with me so she could stay cool.  One smoothie place even gave me a bit of frozen banana for her!  I had to pen her at the Indiana motel where we spent the night because the wallpaper was peeling and she was starting in on some serious chewing.  Of course, now that she knows she can get out of that pen I had to cover it with a sheet and clothespins to actually keep her in there.

She didn’t eat much while we were actually traveling and even with a syringe she didnt’ want water – but once she had a chance to run around the hotel room like a crazy thing she would settle and in the morning she’d be stuffing her face with hay.  When we got home she disappeared under the bed for a few hours but by the nect day everything was back to normal.

Now she’s an exceptionally confident and adventurous bun, and I know that not everybun could handle the stress, but don’t automatically discount the idea.

                                Wendyzski-

That is so awesome that Pepper traveled with you and did well.  Pepper sounds like such a unique and awesome bunny from this story and other stories you have told about her!

It probably would be easier to travel with a bunny as a travel companion than my husband sometimes   .  I am more attentive and catering towards the pets and it is often more annoying to explain everything to him than to actually take care of the critters.

Here are MY pics from BunFest…

Everybunny set up.  Pepper’s pen is on the right but she’s hanging out in her carrier – you can see her stripey-blanket.  All of these pics were taken on Sunday after some serious overnight rain, so everyone put down things to keep their buns off the wet ground.  They all had a blast digdigdigging in the soft sand and mostly ignored the blankies.

Ling (Californian) and Milton (white) in the foreground and Gramps (white lop – deaf and blind), his Crusty Bear(for health reasons Gramps can’t be neutered) and his girlfriend Cookie in the background.

A better shot of Gramps, CrustyBear, and Cookie

You can tell I thought Gramps and CB were adorable.

Camille and The Phooka – a 12 lb French Lop.

Cam and The Phooka go walkies

                                  Hammock snuggles

Pepper in the foreground (with her pen covered) and that’s the mean Miss Ivy in the background.

                                  Another shot of Miss Ivy

Mr. Pepper (with Ling in the next pen).  Mr. Pepper and Miss Ivy travel with Rich in a camper called the BunFest Express II

Jimmy (grey lop) and Hershey.  Jimmy looks like someone left The Phooka in a dryer too long.

                                  – see!

Jimmy , Hershey, Gramps (and CrustyBear) and Cookie, and Ling and Milton all live with Ronie who is a vet tech in Allentown PA.

Eurydice and Mr. Smoky Stewart live in Brooklyn.  Here is a vid that their humans took at BunFest

Also here are Ronie’s pics – I can’t figure out how to post them here

aww…. those pics are so adorable!  Gramps with his Crusty Bear is so endearing- how can your heart not melt for that sweet guy- blind, deaf but has a cute girlfriend Cookie and a reliable stuffed bear companion.

All the buns are cute- but Mr Peppers light gray speckles really caught my eye.  How nice it must have been to see so many rabbits that are so obviously loved and cherished- and all in one area!

I’m used to my Pepper-girl, whose markings are all in “boldface” so to speak.  Mr. Pepper looks like he was done with a fine watercolor wash.  Also, I’m used to my loppy girl but Mr. Pepper has such tiny twitchy uppy ears with a delicate black border around them – I found them fascinating.

And Gramps is awesome.  He will sit on your lap for an hour to be pet, and I found his “licky-spot” to get groomed in return.  He’s somewhere between 9 and 14 – the vet isn’t too sure – but he’s certainly got himself a happy retirement.
