Hi, just looking to find out what the most of you like to feed your bunnies.  I am trying to figure out how much pellets and how much veggies to give my rabbit a day to keep him from overproducing cecals and or having runny poos.   His digestive system gets a little more tricky with age.

Just give me your individual feeding schedules…and especially what veggies you recommend most.

        Thanks!

I feed unlimited Timothy hay, about 1/4 cup of Timothy complete pellets & around 2 cups of chopped greens (1 c. dandelion, 1 c. Parsley topped with 1 bok choy leaf, 3 mini cucumber slices and 1-3 mint leaves) I usually have cilantro in the salad but the market was out >.<

I feed less than 1 tablespoon of Oxbow pellets in the AM to my bunnies. They munch on hay all day. Then in the evening, they get approx. 2 cups of a “salad” consisting of romaine lettuce, dandelion leaves, basil, Italian parsley (flat leafed) and cilantro. They produce nice round poops without any digestive upset. Sometimes you have to experiment with different veggies. One of my bunnies hates curly parsley. He picks it out of his dish. I don’t feed kale or bok choy at all. It causes tummy problems in my bunnies.

My rabbit gets about 1/3 of a cup of mixed Kaytee Timothy and Oxbow 15/23 a day (accidentally bought the alfalfa oxbow pellets…) then about 1 & 1/4 to 1 & 3/4 cups of mixed veggies per day (sometimes carrot or radish tops, parsley, green leaf lettuce, kale, small amounts of celery and occasionally other veggies). He gets to munch on orchard hay during the mid-day and night My rabbit has hardly ever had digestive problems with this diet, and he’s a slightly sensitive rabbit.

The Coco gets a little over a tablespoon of Oxbow at about 10 p.m. ( and believe me, I know if I am late). The rest of the day she gets a bunch of flat leaf parsley, a bunch of mint, a bunch of dill ( on sale in our market right now) and about a 1/3rd of a head of romaine – cilantro also frequently appears and the other ones I switch in and out are Spinach, bok choy, watercress, chicory, dandelion, and very occasionally a little bit of kale. I rip that up into a big container and she gets half for the morning ( 7 a.m and be prompt!) and half at night ( about 5 p.m.)

She gets unlimited hay – Brome and Orchard are her preferred, although she shocked the heck out of me and ate her way through a handful of timothy the other day like it was the best thing she’s ever had.

We’re lucky and have really, really great ethnic and cheap markets ( 99 cents for a massive bunch of mint) so she gets a lot of variety. She has the very limited pellets, as she has had some over production of cecals with eating too many pellets…and as she is a free roam bun, I got tired of smeary rabbit poop on my sheets EVERY DAY.

I read you were having this problem in your other thread too. So the test you had done didn’t show anything in his poop? Certain brands of pellets ccan even cause this. From what I’ve read, it best to get them on just hay until the runny poop ceases (or cecal production normalises) then reintroduce other foods. Personally, I’d reintroduce veggies first, then once he’s tolerating some simple veg + hay, keep that up as regular diet, then test pellets. Quantity and brand.

My own routine is 1Tablespoon pellet each in morning (alfalfa based as tim based is not readily available here). Hay thru out the day. Another tablespoon pellets at 6pm then 2-3 cups veggies at 8pm. Often a few more later at night. Veggies generally are brussel sprout, curly endive, romaine, carrot tops.

My buns have been on the same diet for well over a year (since before we adopted Max) and neither have had any problems.

They get approx 3-4 cups of veggies in the morning to share. It’s always the same formula: 1 or 2 lettuces (varies week to week: green-leaf, red-leaf, romaine, endive, escarole), 1 “green” (mustard, collard, dandelion), 1 herb (flat or curly parsley, or cilantro).

Oxbow Orchard hay all day and night. I replenish this, at a minimum, once a day. I don’t wait until the hay bin is empty, I put a fresh handful in and mix it around to make the old hay “new again”.

They share a 1/2 cup of Oxbow Bunny Basics T in the evening. They don’t eat it all in one sitting. From what I can tell, they munch on that over about 3 or 4 hours. I am torn between reducing the pellets and leaving them as they are. My husband says to leave them as is b/c they do really enjoy them, but I know they could do well with less and I don’t know that they’d really miss a little bit.

                      hello zoolady!
both of my rabbits are young, so this may not help
in the morning (they prefer early- around 5-6, but if I’m not working its closer to 9. and yes, they get mad at me):
both get 1/8 cup of Mazuri rabbit pellets, 2 large leaves of romaine lettuce, 1 leaf of collard greens, and a bit of herb (like parsley or basil).
in the evening (around 6 pm): same, except every other day they get 1 one inch piece of fruit to share or 1/8 cup of shredded carrots.

I don’t vary my veggies very much because one of my buns is a ridiculously picky eater.

and of course, they always have unlimited access to hay, such as timothy or orchard grass.

hope it helps! and good luck!

I give my 2 Mini Lops- Cotton and Schroeder that weigh about 5.5 lbs-

1-2 Tablespoons of Oxbow Timothy pellets in the am

in the afternoon they get approx 2 cups of veggies- usually romaine is the “base” of their salad with 2-3 other greens or veggies added- dandelion, parsley, cilantro, fennel, brocolli, broccoflower, collard greens, etc-  whatever looks freshest at the grocery store.

at bedtime they get another 1-2 Tablespoons of Oxbow Timothy pellets

And they get treats throughout the day- most every day but not always- Craisins, applewood sticks, dehydrated carrots or fruit (strawberries, papaya, blueberries, apples, etc that I dry myself, APD bunny cookies (I break each cookie into 2-3 pieces so the serving is smaller), papaya tablets, oats.

And they are free fed timothy hay- and they also get “treat hay”- premium hay that I get from the BinkyBunny store- it renews their interest in hay- and gives them variety from their baled hay I get from a farm.

Since the bunny pen is by the sliding glass doors to our fenced in yard we got in the habit of giving the pellets in the am and pm at the dogs first and last time outside for the day.  The bunnies know and fully expect their pellets now.
