I’m new to bunny slavedom and have come across a few questions.  I built Pickle and Penelope a NIC cube condo and tried to litter train them straight away, a litter box for each of the three floors. They’ve done well, only refusing to use them when I don’t replenish their hay in a timely manner. All fine and good. My only issue is, being a neat freak, that when they jump out of the litter box it gets stuck to their feet and carried all across the cage, which means vacuuming the areas in and around their cage daily.

As for solutions, I’m not sure whether I need to build something to prevent spilling or change the type of litter I’m using. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

        -Elizabeth, Penelope, and Pickle

What kind of litter do you use? I use Yesterday’s News and none of it gets stuck to Otto’s fur … though he does occasionally kick a few poos out of the box which is unavoidable I guess.

Kaytee brand Soft-Sorbent is the litter I use, suggested by Petsmart in the small animal section. They didn’t have a lot of variety. Should I look at a different store or different section?

i would recommend yesterday’s news or carefresh. the soft-sorbant is verrrrry sticky. i dont think the person who suggested it to you had much experience with litter…

Wood stove pellets are the best, get some in the winter because that is the only time they sell them.

There are many options for litter out there.

Yesterday’s News is a good one and it is available at Petsmart – look in the cat section though for the unscented one – bigger bag than the one in the small animal section and cheaper – they try to stick you with price with that small bag for small animals.

Also if you are willing to venture outside of the pet stores there are usually places that sell sawdust pelleted litters (actually like Feline Pine in the cat section) that are safe and much cheaper than what you find in the petstore. I use a brand called Lone Star Bedding, but I’m not sure if you can get this where you are located. I get a 35 pound bag for $6.00.

I’ve used that soft-sorbent stuff before.. I used it for bedding and it didn’t last very long..lol. Right now I’m using ExquisiCat Recycled Paper litter. I think It’s cheaper then Yesterday’s News but I’m not sure. It comes in pellet form and this litter is heavier then the soft-sorbent litter so it should be harder to stick to the bunnies feet or be flicked out of the litterbox. It also comes scented but idk if that would be okay for bunnies.

You could try switching to a covered litter box- hooded cat litter box or try adding a grate over the litter made from a bent NIC grid (I think KokaneeandKahlua did this) or cut one out of egg crate/light diffuser panel.

I agree, softsorbent seems amazing when you first start out, but Ive switched to the Carefresh and its a much better odor absorber and doesnt get all over the place as much! Its pretty inexpensive too and petco.com is having a huge sale online right now! I just got 2 things of it for the price of one almost!

Thanks for all of the ideas! I think a visit to the pet store is in order tonight. I’ll see if they have the recycled paper litters, something heavier would be a godsend. Sarita, you and I live relatively close if I’m not mistaken – I live in Euless, TX. I’ll definitely check into the Lone Star Bedding. Thanks again for all of the help!

Here’s where I get my Lone Star Bedding.

I believe they also carry them at some Tractor Supplies if you have those near you, you can check there as well.

That’s really the only thing I get for my rabbits at these places, but the Lone Star Bedding is well worth it.

We did a quick run to petsmart and I’ve switched out the litter to Yesterday’s News – none on the cage floor! The vacuum can be put back in the closet. >:]
