I know that sometimes we get questions on here about shedding and what is “normal”, so I thought I’d post a picture of what is “normal” for my bun.

I can always tell when Pepper is blowing her coat because she starts to look tufty all over. She is usually black/white and shiny, but as the coat dies off it gets duller and greyer.  She sheds out in patches like the ones in this picture.  I can gently tug on the hairs and they come right out, leaving “velvet” behind – the very short new hair starting to grow in.  Sometimes when I pluck I actually can see naked pink skin around the edges of the velvet patches – which squicks me out a bit but the loose hair only comes off when it’s ready to and the skin isn’t irritated or bleeding or anything – just freaky-looking.

Pepper also gets moody and grumpy when she is about to start or is in the middle of a huge shed.  I joke that she gets PMS – PreMoulting Syndrome.  I don’t know whether it’s the hormones that cause the shed that make her moodier than usual, if she’s itchy or slightly uncomfy with the old hair, or if she just knows she looks silly, but she’s definitely more irritable, will try to nip more often, and will sulk under chairs rather than doing her fuzzy-speed-bump impression in the middle of the hallway.

So, if your bun looks like this, don’t panic.  It may be “normal” for them.

thanks, wendyzski – tha’t an excellent description of shedding. I love the pix with the bit of pink showing.

I wonder if bunnies are vain, and won’t be seen having a Bad Fur Day?

Must be fun at your place at the moment!

Actually, since we’re talking shedding, may as well ask my question here…Rumball has hard little lumps or something right down at skin level on his cheeks. I think it is dry skin. I have seen when I first got him, that he would shed tufts or plugs out from his cheeks that are joined at the end by old skin I think. So these lumps will come out when he’s ready to shed them? I’m wondering if I should just be leaving them alone.

Pepper gets those too.   I work them out with my fingers – she usually likes it, so I think they are itchy.

Just be careful – buns also have thickened skin sometimes at the base of their whiskers, so before you start pulling make sure it’s not attached to something important.   I read about someone who thought she was being helpful and dug out a whisker-root and ended up with an abcess!

I found that those plugs at the bottom just almost fell out in my hand when Spockie was ready to shed them. No really plucking involved. They are tempting to pull on though.

Well he doesn’t currently have the migrating plugs but I do think I’ll see some soon as he’s shedding elsewhere on his bunny self. It is tempting to work on them….

That is EXACTLY what Max looks like right now. Tufts of fur sticking out everywhere… I’ve been brushing him everyday, as well as taking a lint roller to him a couple other times thru out the day… TONS of fur.
