        Hi all,

My rabbit is having a reoccuring problem with his fur. Three weeks ago, I noticed a gash on his side and upon further inspection, it appears that his fur layer had split apart there. I saw a red layer of tissue that was underneath his fur. I doctored the wound and currently the wound has closed and looks like fur will grow back soon.

Today, I noticed a similar tear on the top of his back. This is really starting to freak me out. I don’t know how he’s hurting himself or what on. It doesn’t appear that he notices the wounds and there’s no blood. I monitor him while he’s out of his cage and I don’t know what he could do inside his cage.

Is this a common problem for rabbit fur to tear open? Is there anything I should be doing to treat this and is there anything I can do to prevent it?

        Thanks for any help

Honestly, I would seek the advice of a vet, this sounds not normal to me.

That is not normal at all! You should schedule an appt with a vet that sees bunnies!

I know it’s a holiday, but check with your vet to see if she has any coverage this weekend – maybe you won’t need to wait until Monday. Also, if you have to wait for an appointment, call and ask to be called back so you can describe it to your vet and possibly get advice to treat it until you can bring your bunny in. I am concerned about infection, plus whatever is causing it.

Please, has he seen a vet yet? How is he doing?

Your rabbit needs to be seen by a vet experienced with rabbits. If you don’t have a rabbit vet, I think the next best thing would be to seek out a regular vet who would be willing to see your rabbit. I am not sure what you mean by “doctoring the wound”. This sounds serious and possibly life-threatening. Please don’t hesitate.

It sounds very serious to me, and not usual for a bunny to have wounds like that. Does he possible have a really sharp toenail that he is cutting himself with? And are you sure there isn’t anything anywhere on the cage that could be causing that? If you have one of those cages built with zip-ties sometimes the ends where you snip off the extra can be really sharp. I’ve cut myself on those a few times.
