Ever since I lost Penny I have said how much happier Cotton and Schroeder seem and that I have no plans for getting a 3rd bunny.  We were in Chicago on Mon and Tue and as part of our vacation we always “shop” for our pets- and there are a lot of dog/cat boutiques and bakeries in  Chicago.  While we were driving from one dog boutique to our hotel we passed a pet store- not a chain- so I thought what the heck- why not stop.  I strongly disapprove of pet stores that sell puppies and of course there were puppies in the window- but we went in anyway.  And I saw one of the cutest bunnies ever!  It was of course greatly overpriced like everything else in the store- rabbits were $60, gerbils were $23 and Robo hamsters were $60 for example.  Anyway it was a “designer breed” of bunny- it was a Velveteen Lop- which must be a rex or mix rex bred with an English Lop- it was white and black- had velvetly fur, curly whiskers and the longest ears I have ever seen in person (I have never seen an English Lop in person).  I have to admit I was a little enthralled by it- and since we were out of town I did pet it.  I took a few pics with my husbands phone- and I will have to download those tomorrow to the computer when he is home.  I forgot my phone in the car- and it was not worth going to get it or asking to use a regular camera and getting that out of the car.

But later that night and especially the next morning I kept thinking about this bunny.  But I don’t want a young unaltered bunny, I don’t want to buy from a petstore like that and I actually don’t want a 3rd bunny.  I could not get the bunny out of my head- so I called the petstore and asked if it was a boy or girl- knowing if it was a girl then I certainly did not even want to consider further because Cotton disliked Penny who was a spayed female and seems to tolerate Schroeder much better.  Even though pet stores usually don’t know a male from a female- I called- was put on hold- and then they told me it was a female.  So I was finally able to relax and realize that this bunny was not meant to be.  I am not even sure how old it is because I did not ask sex or age when we were there since I am so anti- selling live puppies in a pet store- I figured they might not know the truth anyway.

But now that I have seen an English lop mix- I think that when I am ready for another bunny- years and years from now since Cotton and Schroeder better live a long, long time- I will certainly look for a rescue bunny with such long silky ears!  Cotton has such a round, fat, square head- and this Velveteen bunny had a narrow, long head- very majestic looking.  Cotton looks like a “bulldog” and the Veleveteen Lop looked like a “greyhound”.  Amazing to see and feel the difference in breed- they are almost exact opposites!

But Tue morning when I was thinking about this bunny I thought- “Binky Bunny needs an Emergency Hotline for bunny owners to call have be “talked down” from any rash decisions!”  LOL.

I will post pics in the next day or so when I get them downloaded from hubbys phone- it is horrible that they kept bunnies and guinea pigs together in the same pen (another good reason I did not buy from them!)

That would have been hard to resist, velveteen and long ears down… but there will be one for you in the future.

I just looked up Velveteen Lop on Yahoo and to my surprise it is in the workings to becoming an actual breed!  I assumed it was a petstore “name” to increase sales like “teddy bear hamster”, etc.  They are a cross of Mini Rex and English Lop- then further refined by further breeding.

Oh, Katnip. A bunny with fur like Spockie’s, markings like Sammy’s and cute ears. Sigh.
What’s the number of that hotline again?

I have a friend who has one of these lops. The breed has been around for quite a while.

Aw! It’s a perfect cross between Maxie and Meadow!

I think the hotline is a great idea! I posted this in another thread: I called the vet office where I got Meadow spayed 1.5 years ago to ask the neuter/spay cost for a local BB member… the cost has gone up 100 DOLLARS in less than TWO YEARS! I paid $185 total for Meadow’s spay. They are charging $220 for a neuter, $280 for a spay! I didn’t even ask if that included pain meds, I was in such shock at the price increase, I just thanked her, wished her a good day, and hung up.

So my new mantra if I ever become tempted by a young, unaltered bunny is:

                        “220 neuter… 280 spay… 220 neuter… 280 spay… 220 neuter… 280 spay…”

                        *shudder!*

I think all rabbits are super adorable so I pretty much have to talk myself out of every available rabbit. ”Get a new rabbit or keep the boyfriend, hmmmm, the new bunny probably won’t help pay the bills….

I have to admit my husband was not at all enthused about me petting the bunny and fawning over it at the petstore- he was ready to leave and I was enthralled by the lops beauty and sweetness- she stretched her neck out when I petted her, obviously enjoying it.

The next day he was even less thrilled when I wanted to call to see if it was a boy or girl- but he called info to the number for me.  Even though the day before I had about a dozen reasons why even though the bunny was awesome I would not really buy it.  So while he was not at all for it- he could have been persuaded.  It was a weird feeling- I just had to make sure this wasn’t a bunny that was meant to be mine.  Plus not to mention I adopted Schroeder, whom I adore, for $30 from the Humane Society already neutered- and this bunny was $60 before neuter/spay and would have needed a health exam and fecal check ASAP from being in a pet store housed with guinea pigs too (Too many sources of animals for possible health issues).  And then when you add insurance on top of that— Cotton and Schroeder are insured- how could I not insure a new bunny?   ::Big Sigh::  I know I made the right decision to not get her.

I knew when I saw Cotton that it was meant to be- I knew when I saw Schroeder that it was meant to be, same with Penny- so hesitating on this one should have told me it was her looks I was hung up on- as I did not like her background very much, pet store, $60, living with guinea pigs, unspeutered, etc.

Oh well, now I can picture my next dream bunny- with long floppy ears- and I think color pointed/shaded would be nice- seal brown like the siamese cats.

Of course, maybe once you get Cotton and Schroeder together full-time… ;o)

LOOK AT THOSE EARS!! It’s like she has 6 legs   She looks like such a big sweetie.

That cost was one of the stepping stones for us adopting our foster, Vin Diesel. The vet we used wanted $250 to spay our Trixie (we didn’t know the cancer risks when we first adopted, she developed cancer and we had her spayed, but it was too late by then ). But I figured I’d call around for a new vet now that we have Addie and Benjie, and now Vin. The new vet I found wants $100 to neuter Vin. I was really surprised.

Beka, the price includes everything – but the pain meds aren’t for Max, they’re for you. (She’s in shock, get the metacam!)

I really do think we need a hotline. I have forbidden myself to go into petstore ‘cept to get supplies so i don’t end up with yet another rabbit.

My buns vet charges 300   WHA  socks blowing off feet hair sticking up.

Yes I agree that 280 spay 220 neuter mantra will definitely work.     I know another vet for 100.   My friend knows one for 47.00   I think it is the humane society 1 hour from here.  Without hubby bringing me would be a long bus trip.  No new bunnies no new bunnies.
