My three year old male rabbit had what I assumed to be Intermittant Soft Stool (ISS) but upon closer examination of his leavings, it appears he is leaving his cecotrophs around. I’ve brought him to the vet and they have checked his stools for bacteria/parasites and gave him a few days of stool hardener, but after the treatment stopped, his symptoms returned. (Now at the time I brought him to the vet, I didn’t realize it was cecotrophs that were being left behind)
Except for a persistant parasite infestation which is taking both revolution and advantage to get under control, he is perfectly healthy and his behaviour is normal.
Is it possible to get a large quantity of the same stool hardener from a people pharmacy (the vet charged ten dollars for a two day supply :/) because I am thinking that regular doses of this medication may be the only way to stop the runny poos/cecotrophs.
Any help/experiences with this problem appreciated!
