My husband and I will be away next weekend for a family function. We are not sure what to do with our bunny and what’s best for her!

We have a cat so we’re definitely separating them. Usually, when we’re not home, our kitty goes outside because he’s an indoor/outdoor kitty. We’d let him out when we leave for work and he’ll come back in when we get home in the afternoon. However, when we are away, we’ve always kept him inside so that he’s not out at night.

Anyway, it’s been working for the bunny because when the cat is inside, we’re at home to monitor him and Chloe (our bunny). Now that we’re going to be away, what’s the best thing to do? We’re thinking of putting bunny in our master bathroom (that’s ventilated and has stone floor so it’s pretty cool) and open the door to our bedroom so that it has even more circulation. Dante (our cat) will not have access to this space because our master bedroom door will be closed. My main concern is heat. It’s been getting pretty hot here (up to 105) degrees. Our house stays cool due to insulation and it only gets to 85 degrees inside. BUT, I’m really, really worry about Chloe. My sister will check up on her, but is that enough? Should we try to find her a pet hotel for now? We can’t bring her with us because it’s really far and we’re driving so I’d hate for her to be in the car for that long. What should we do?

With the heat I would try to find somewhere that could take her. So that she can be kept cool. Your vet maybe?

If your sister will come and check up, she should be prepared to take your bunny somewhere if the heat spikes unexpectedly. 85 is pretty hot, and any hotter might cause your bunny some stress.

How long is the drive? I successfully took Otto on a 5 hour car trip for a weekend away, though it wasn’t too hot out yet.

Do you have any local rabbit rescues? Often they do some type of boarding, and so whatever you pay supports the rescue, and also ensures that your bunny is in good hands while you are gone.

I agree, with temperatures rising I would also find another alternative. You’ve given some good suggestions so far. Let us know what you end up doing.

Thanks everyone! We decided to bring Chloe over to my parents who will babysit her. They’re very excited and will be home on the weekend to check up on her.
