Hey yall. I took Max to vet last week because he was scratching his ears a lot. She did a skin scraping and said he had no mites or anyting weird. He was just having a little bit of dry skin. Well, this week he’s losing some hair on his back! Its been gradually getting bigger but there’s not redness or anything. His undercoat is still there but his top coat seems to be disappearing. What the heck is going on?!

Max is blowing his coat, I would think. It is that time of year that bunnies begin to shed more. I think BinkyBunny said two to three times per year they really lose fur?
Time to get out the grooming implements! ^_^ My mini-rex loses the whole lot right down his spine and goes down to velvet. He’s already done this twice this season.

Your Max is so cute.  I just love his little face.    Also when a bun is blowing his coat he may feel itchier too.

When I brush them I brush opposite of how the hair grows.  This loosens up more hair.  Then brush with the hair.  Makes them feel less itchy too.

Bunnie appears to be shedding a lot as well. I haven’t found patches of missing fur or anything just the bars and bottom of her cage are covered with really fluffy fur.

What kind of brush do you guys recommend?

I like my Furminator grooming tool.

Thank goodness!! I was soo worried. It has been 110 degrees outside. I’ll keep the air on extra cool.
And the furminator is the BOMB but its supppper expensive (40-60 dollars) but a nice substitute is the superpet brush in the small animal section of petstores.

As far as combs go – my favorite is the hairbuster comb, and though I like the furminator, there are many of us that have experienced its “over-grooming” power. You can groom and groom and actually take off more hair than is supposed to come out, and neither you nor the bunny even notice until you begin to notice many thin spots (that are not related to just molting). So be careful with the furminator.

Except for the ear-scratching thing, my rabbit has the exact same problem. His rear is constantly shedding for about a year now. I have brought him to the vet multiple times and on several occasions they couldn’t find any parasites, but after I insisted they take fur samples from the balding area, sure enough they found them. (If you bring him to the vet, insist they take samples from the affected area as well) Still, I have been giving my rabbit regular doses of both revolution and advantage and he is still balding. I hear that if a rabbit has had a serious enough parasite problem, the balding can stay even when the parasites are gone.

The medication that worked the best in my many trips to the vet was an injection of an anti-parasite drug called ‘Ivermectin’–it cleared up his balding fur in a couple of weeks–I would recommend that. The reason I stopped using it was because I had to bring him to the vet once a week to get this injection and it started to become very costly and time consuming. I switched to the drops figuring I’d have the same results but so far I havn’t. The injections are only about ten dollars per visit–not bad, but I didn’t have a car to go back and forth to the vet. :/

thanks zoolady- my vet did test his hair, so i’m pretty sure hes just blowing his coat. i love my vet- i hear horrible stories of un-attentive vets.

That sounds like you have a really good vet. My buns get patches like that when they are shedding too, usually after they get the spiky butt look with all the loose furs coming out!
