So my garden is all planted, we put a fence so the wild buns wouldn’t feast on it.  I planted Little Gem Romaine, Huge Romaine, Parsley, Endive, Kale and some onions (for us).  We’re real gardeners huh!    I go to get all the weeds out including the tomato plants that the previous owners planted that are starting to grow back..ugh!  Some of the lettuce isn’t too bad but there are bugs (that I can’t see) that are eating the kale!  Can I still feed my buns lettuce with the little holes the bugs have eatten as long as I wash it well?  Is there anything I can do to prevent this (without posioning my buns)…I’m thinking no but I didn’t know if anyone had any ideas.  We’re thinking of making a garden in our basement too (during winter), I’ll have to research this also but didn’t know if anyone does this?

        Thanks!

You could plant some marigolds. They are suppose to have repelling power to some of the pesky bugs that eat gardens.
Plant chives is another idea. I read it repels aphids.
Another thing I read, make a garlic spray. By soaking a bunch of garlic cloves overnight and then squishing them up in water and strain the water into a spray bottle to spray the plants with. You could probably google some home remedy pesticides and find different ‘recipes’ for sprays.
If you want I can try to find the article I read that garlic spray info from.

Cool, I didn’t know marigolds did that.  I’ll have to try and find some.  I know the previous owners had this huge herb garden (1/2 the stuff I didn’t know what it was and we’d never use it), I kept the mint and spearmint, and  I had moved the chives in the garden since I wanted to replace the herb garden with a flower garden but the chives looked like they were dying so I thew them out…now I wish I had tried to save them a little better

Hmm that garlic spray sounds interesting!

I heard soapy water sprayed on them repels the bugs too.  Dont’ know how true that is but you coudl try it with garlic.   won’t hurt to try it.

eww. I just found, last night, 8 big ol’ gross caterpillars eating my Parsley! I picked them off but man, they really did some damage.
After googling for like ever, I found they were cuter worms. They are called that because they cut down stalks and ruin plants.
They are definitely the least attractive caterpillar I have ever seen. ugh.

Anyways, it might be a good idea for you to go check out the garden at night with a flashlight. Just to see what is coming out at night.

sprinkle dried blood(i know, gross!) around the plants, usually this keeps large animals away. i don’t know about bugs though.

I have a problem with slugs. So every few days I set out a few shallow bowls filled with beer. The slugs love it and then drown in it. It might be worth a try.

Oh and I have haven’t noticed a difference with expensive/cheap beer.

Who would have thought that slugs like to get drunk?!    I forgot all about slugs, I did see one on a piece of lettuce last week ew!  We will have to go out and get some.  Hey would wine work too?  We have 2 bottles of wine that were gifts and even though we don’t drink we tried them…didn’t care for it at all.

Salt works on slugs n snails too.  Dries them up.  My Mom used to use salt in her garden after seeing snail and slug trails. Worked too.

Yeah there are some ugly stinky caterpilars out there.  Also there is one I believe a big green one with spikes all over that makes your hang sting when you touch it.  Nice surprise when I finally discovered what was stinging me.
