Hi I am having difficulties training my boy bunny, Thistle, it is so much harder to catch him when he pees than it was to catch Fern! It is because he lifts his tail when he is feeling horny as well as when he is going to pee… I can’t tell the difference.

He is litterbox trained in his cage but if I let him out he pees. I have towels spread out on the floor over the rug to protect it a little from the pee. Do you think this is what is setting him off.

Also since he was only neutered about a week ago do you think his hormones could be factoring into the litter training issue? Fern’s pen is right next to him but I don’t know if that is a factor because he does not seem to be marking when he pees outside of his litter box, he just does a normal sized pee on one of the towels.

The towels might be a factor because when we took him to the vet’s office he peed on the towel they put on the ground for him (Our vets office lets the bunnies run around on the floor).

If the towels are a factor do you think that he will always pee on towels? Or do you think it is just a pre litter training thing that will go away after he is completely litter trained.

He really has improved in his litter training but this is a hump I can’t seem to get him over.

If you did not know already he is about a year old and I have had him for exactly a week.

Many soft surfaces can make a rabbit think it’s a good spot to pee. A towel is a favorite because it’s so absorbent as well as it can be dug at (rabbits like to pee where they can also dig). If you could put him on a bare surface for a while he might get used to always going into his cage/litter box for his potty needs. He might always like to pee on towels, but let’s give him more time because of the recent neuter. As hormones change in him now his urge for marking will decrease.

Its true, its true, Thistle does seem to dig then pee. Do you think having one of those hard outdoor rugs on the ground would make him pee (that is what is on the ground now). The outdoor rug is actually really good, it cannot be chewed very easily and if it needs a wash I take it outside and get it sprayed with the hose. It is not as easily dug as the towels, do you think he would pee on that too?

What kind of rug is it? What material? My rabbits will dig and poop on coconut fibre shoemats.

Hmm it looks like some kind of synthetic material but it is hard to tell, it is woven so tightly. It says it is mold free, if that helps, lol.

Why don’t you give it a go and try it like that since you can hose it clean.

You could try a vinyl tablecloth like those picnic ones or a tarpaulin. Do you put his litter box out of the cage when he’s out or just leave cage door open? I would guess also that a week post neuter plus being in new environment would factor into it too.

I had used a tarp as a surface when I first got Lint. That worked.

I have a litter box in his cage and out of his cage, Yea I bet him being recently neutered and in a new environment factors in but I am just being an impatient bunny mom, I hate bunnies being non litter trained, it is really annoying. but life goes on.

I have some linoleum in my basement, I might use that if taking the towels away doesn’t work.

I think the linoleum will help a lot. In order to litter train my bunnies I would just keep them on linoleum with a litterbox. Then, any time they peed I would wipe it up with vinegar, and then throw any stray poops into the litterbox. Usually after about a week they would figure out that the floor was supposed to stay clean and that the litterbox was for the poops

Like everyone else said, he has several factors working against him… he’s new, there’s a pretty gal the next pen over, newly neutered… The soft towels may be encouraging his peeing. Keep us posted on how everything goes and what works for him.

Ok, Bringing this up again. Thistle is doing very well with his litter training but he keeps peeing in this one spot, it is kind of close to his litter box but not right next to it.

He actually has only peed in it twice but I don’t want it to become a habit. It is the only other spot he pees in.

It could be because it is close to Fern and he could be marking, but even so, I want to stop this habit.

I cleaned the spot with vinegar so I don’t think that he smelt the pee from the first time and peed on it again.

What do you think I should do to stop this?

Ok ok, he peed again on a different part, but it was still on the cardboard that I had put down. So I took the cardboard out hoping that the cardboard was what was triggering him to pee.

Do you think he is acting this way because he is so close to a female bunny?
