So my bunny, Chubs, refuses to hop one foot on to hard floor. This isn’t a problem, as it just means he stays out of the kitchen but I’m just curious whether this is a common fear that buns have. He doesn’t mind his cage after he shovels all the bedding to one corner, haha, but he so hates the kitchen floor that if I put him on a blanket in its center and he desperately wants off…he won’t do it. He’ll wait to be put back on the carpet. We find it entertaining but I just wondered how common this was!

If you go by my bunnies then I’d say it’s pretty common. I now have had two bunnies, different breeds, and neither one of them will ever set foot in my kitchen or bathroom off of the carpet. And they both have preferred the smooth plastic cage bottom. Samantha is still just a little teenager, but she won’t go near floors. I’ve seen pix of people with their bunnies climbing into the fridge, but you’d never see that with mine. Go figure.
Hi JNC! I love your bunny’s name, it’s awesome! And he’s super cute, too! I have one bunny and he is extremely curious so nothing stops him from going anywhere! He’s the only bunny I’ve ever been a slave to, and I’ve only been ‘serving’ him for about 2 months now, so I haven’t really got tons of experience here, but he is certainly more hesitant when he’s on my kitchen floor… Mostly because he has learned that he’ll slip and slide if he trys to go too fast…
my bun is that way too- max is scared of the slick floors because he tries to binky or bunny 500 and falls over. which is quite comical to me, but poor max gets his pride hurt and won’t step on it again.
I have 3 bunnies that really don’t like the tile flooring. I think they just don’t like slipping around. I have one that will step on it, but she usually runs around on it flicking her feet behind her like she is disapproving of it!
I thought Freya was find with hard floors. Even though I’ve always kept mats in the bathroom for her she’s constantly on the bathroom floor lounging around. She also loved to run back and forth when she was really little. Yesterday though I took her to the store with me to get her food. She was wanting out of the cart so I picked her up. Then she wanted down and started to struggle in her special way that says “I will NOT stop until you PUT ME DOWN!!!” So, I knelt down and when she saw the floor approaching hopped off me. Well, she was a bit shocked by the lacquered conrete floor and didn’t move a muscle from the splayed way she landed since she catupulted herself as far as her leash would let her shen she jumped. (We have a very short leash.) It was rather pathetic, also kinda funny, but I picked her back up and she was perfectly content to remain in my arms so she wouldn’t have to be on that horrid floor again. Maybe it’s only the bathroom floor she’s fond of. She was hanging out upstairs a bit a few days ago and didn’t go in the kitchen but she didn’t have a whole lot of time either and doesn’t know her veggies come from there.
Nova could care less, and Hubble just drags his back feet until he can find carpet. He’s better now that he literally lives on the same stuff, but he still wants carpet instead. He doesn’t mind the tile as much because there are little grip spots frequently.
“Grip spots” might make a difference. We have a kind of textured tile in the bathroom and the buns will go in there to explore. In the kitchen/dining room, there is very smooth tile and they avoid it like the plague. Meadow used to go in the kitchen and dining room before Max arrived, but ever since I have rarely seen her in there. Currently, I trim nails in the dining room and when I’m done I put them down on the tile floor, they have no problem hopping back to their room (in fact they make a beeline for it) so I know they can do it, they just choose not to. I am sure this is one place where my bunny-proofing will someday fail. I will leave something in the kitchen/dining room that they can’t have and that’s the moment they’ll decide to explore in there.
aww, my bun LOVES slick flooring! she runs up and down it all the time. she slides and hit walls and just gets up and does it again. its so cute, and i dont feel bad laughing because she seems to like it.
I was pretty afraid that Otto wouldn’t like hard floors, which is a problem since our entire main level is hardwood floors except for an area rug in the living room (he’d have to cross hardwood floors to get to it). But he doesn’t have a problem with the wood floors at all and will hop around them all day (and get up to some pretty good speeds too). He hasn’t even tried to come into the living room yet, so I’m curious to see how he likes the carpet.
sgregory,
can we see a video of that, please? ![]()
lol, ill see what i can do! all i have is a camera in my laptop and i can never get good videos.
i want a video recorder sooo badly, becuase i feel like im missing all of this bunny cuteness!
i think the video might be a little too big..
k, it worked! its long and boring.. but its my attempt at trying to get her to slide.. whihc she never does.. but she runs and chases me! and at the end there’s a little bit of the kitten i rescued from my mom.. they’re already bonded! the kitten is amazing.
and so is the bunny, lol.
ohh, and sorry for all of the shots of me, i dont know how to edit the video. ![]()
Hahaha. I love the part where you run away and she chases. Hilarious. When I try that, Otto just stares at me like I’m looney (who am I kidding? he’s probably right)
Thats so cute.
Cotton gets on the lineoleum tiled floor. I had a few rugs out for him. Now that we got a big big rug he comes out to play more often. He likes his new rug. He can maneuver the bare floor but he much prefers a rug. Now maybe he will start bunny 500’s instead of circle spins.
That is so cute! I can’t believe she chases after you! Aww!
s, how long have you had her? she’s such a sweet heart!
That’s so funny sgregory! One of my bunnies learned how to do this at the last apartment I had, he would run on the carpet at super speed and then sit down as soon as he got to the kitchen tile, and slide right into the dishwasher. I was never lucky enough to get it on camera ![]()
My rabbit is cool with linoleum. He doesn’t run at high speeds or binkie on it though.
It’s so funny when he gets scared and tries to take off when he’s on the linoleum!
hahaha.. he just kinda runs in place like a cartoon for a couple seconds before he actually gets going.
That video was pretty cute sgregory. I run around with my bunny like that. Sometimes he chases me but other times I
just ended feeling stupid when he doesn’t. That kitty cat is soo cute!
lol, thanks everyone!
i’ve had her for about 3 months now. i just started building her a huge three level NIC cage! im so excited. XD
I loved the video sgregory! You’re dealing with bunny people here… we could watch a 20 minute video of a bun breathing and be in heaven! It was perfect! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that she chases you! That’s so adorable. If I run, my buns just there and say amongst themselves, “Thank goodness, I never thought she’d leave!” LMAO!
That is such a nice-looking cat. Very calm and gets along with the bunny?! Are you still going to try to rehome her?
Yea the video was really cute! I love that your bunny chased you! Also it is funny near the end when you give her some greens, and she finishes them then she looks at you for more, you show her your hands as if to say “no more bunny.”
So cute.
The kitten is pretty cute too.
That video is cute! We have hardwood floors and laminate in the dining room and kitchen. First time Archie came home he ran into the dining room from the living room (it’s all open) at full speed and slid across the floor and I think he hit the wall a bit. After that he still runs pretty fast but he makes sure he doesn’t slide as much, he has more control. And Gracie only runs at full speed when she runs circles in the living room.
I love that your bun chases you, that’s so cool! Sometimes Archie will come to me when I call his name or whistle, but they both chase me when I have food for them…well Archie does at least, Gracie sometimes will stop to look around; I swear she has ADD sometimes ![]()
OMG! sgregory, I absolutlely loved this video. Just perfect. No editing or fancy stuff needed. Just the way it was was so charming. How your bunny follows you around…AWE!!!! And I love how the kitty comes into the video and can’t figure out what the big deal is about the cilantro (or whatever), then walks near the camera and stretches and looks straight at the camera like “what’s the big deal here?”. The whole thing- beginning to end. So charming!
