The pet store has been out of Oxbow and I couldn’t wait any longer and just settled for the Kaytee timothy pellets. I thought I heard that the rainbow one might be better, but it doesn’t look like her food and I want as little change as possible. I’m just going to order her Oxbow online so I know that I have it and don’t have to worry about the store not being able to stock her favorite. She hasn’t eaten nearly as much as she usually does, but she did eat more hay than usual today. Of course, after acting out and dumping her hay box and refusing her veggies. I didn’t just switch her food, I mixed them together. Is there anything else I can do while we wait for her good stuff to come in the mail? She’s kinda pissy at me, and I don’t really blame her.

I’m not sure. They are picky little creatures. The Oxbow is very high quality and the Kaytee must taste very different to her. I would just make sure she always has plenty of hay and watch that she doesn’t get an upset tummy from the switch.

I feed the rainbow pellets to my rabbit with dental issues and he does love them. I bought them because they were extruded into a different form than the regular pellets which I though might help grind his teeth down more. It’s possible as well that these are more filling than the oxbow pellets…Pepe actually prefers these unfortunately over the regular pellets.

New stupid question… I was thinking of just buying the 50 pound bag of food since it’s a great savings. She’s eating about 5 pounds a month so it will last me about 10 months. At what age do I stop giving her baby bunny food and start giving her regular food? I don’t want to end up with 25 pounds of baby bunny food wasted and I won’t be saving any money that way either.

You don’t have to feed her alfalfa (15/23) pellets. You could feed timothy pellets. She can get some extra nutrition from a handful of alfalfa hay each day in addition to her timothy hay.

also, you really want to keep the pellets as fresh as possible- only buying about 6 weeks in advance. i’ve read that a couple of times in different books, so i think its legit. i would say buying ten months in advance will make the pellets stale.

I think you can wrap up and freeze bulk pellets for maybe 6 months?

I store mine in an airtight container for about 6 weeks, and they seem to do fine, the bunnies will eat them up near the bottom of the bun just as much as when they are first out of the bag. I’m glad you could at the least find a timothy based pellet, I think that is the best alternative you have at the moment. Is she eating anything at all?

Oh yeah, she’s eating a TON of hay now. Which is a stress reliever because I never felt like she was eating enough. She’s only snubbing veggies and her pellets, although she did eat some pellets while I was at work today. She was eating about a cup or more of pellets a day, when she’s all grown up and we reduce her pellets a 5 pound bag will last more like 10 weeks instead about 4. Freezing pellets sounds like a great idea, thanks!
