I have a two and half year old rabbit. He is a really health bunny. Eats pellets, hay, and fresh veggies. For the past few months he has been having a brownish discharge. When if first started happening I took him to two different vets. Both said he was a very health and could not tell me what it was. I stopped worrying about it, but he keeps staining the carpet. Does anyone know what this could be or how to stop it?

The discharge is a brown watery substance. He is litter trained, pees and poops in his box. His stools are normal. His diet/appetite are fine. His behaviors are normal. He looks and acts perfectly normal. But he leaves these little drops of discharge behind. I tried to get a sample for the vet, but the discharge is too minimal. So I can’t get a good sample. The discharge happens often, but not all the time. Any ideas as to what this could be?

          Welcome Chupito!

Is it the same color as his urine? (urine can alot of different colors, from yellow to bright orange/brown. If this is just a small spot of urine, he could just be marking, otherwise, if he is leaving urine dribble behind he could have a urinary tract infection. The fact that the vets said he was perfectly healthy without being able to have urinalysis done makes me wonder why they would say that. I mean he could be healthy EXCEPT for a UTI or something, and so I that’s baffling.

It is not normal for rabbits just leave droplets of urine behind unless they are “intended’ marking spots or there is a medical reason for it.

So when you say the discharge happens often, but not all the time, could you be more specific, and does he normally do it the same locations and if so where?

            Thanks BinkyBunny!

His urine is yellow color. He urinates in his litter box. The discharge is only brown. I don’t find yellow droplets being left behind. The vets said nothing about it a possible UTI.

What I mean by often, but not all the time is that is that he doesn’t always left droplets behind. He doesn’t do it in the same locations. It doesn’t seem intentional. He does leave more droplets in the corner of his cage, but that’s only because he sleeps in the corners. There are little drops all over his cage. When I let him out sometime I will see droplets and sometimes I don’t.

hmmm. That is definitely not normal. I mean both Rucy (RIP) and Vivian would leave a little spot of urine – but it is definitely intentional and it is the same color as their urine.

You said you took your bunny to two different vets so how incredibly frustrating. What did they do exactly to check him out and give him a clean bill of health?

Also are the spots rather opaque still even though it is brown? or is is more like watery poo?

I am also going to check with one of our leaders who is a vet tech and see if she has some answers about this.

Yeah, I have no idea what to do. The first vet I took Chupito to was an emergency vet. She did a basic check up, she checked this anus and urethra area. But she admitted not knowing much about bunnies. She stated that she couldn’t find anything wrong with him and she suggested another vet that knows about rabbits. I took him to the second vet who did a much more thorough examination. She checked thorough exam his anus and urethra area. They took a stool sample to analysis or run some tests. Nothing came out of the tests. She said everything was fine.

Its not watery poo. At first I thought it may be diarrhea. But both vets said he showed no signs of diarrhea. I would say is more an opaque light brown.

                Thanks for all your help!

                  Welcome!
It might be an idea your vet does a urine test also. Though UTI aren’t always picked up by urinalysis – so maybe a culture too? I think that’s what they can do (????)
Though Chupito’s urine is yellow, it can turn brownish after it is exposed to the air. Do you notice the droplets right away or discover the brown spots after? To me it sounds like urine dribbling, possibly UTI or other bladder issues – but only the vet will be able establish that.

Any idea where the drainage is from?  urethra, anal?  Have you checked the scent glands to make sure those are clean and healthy?

Maybe talk to your vet about keeping the rabbit there for observation to see if they can detect the discharge?  Have set up in a cage with white lining (blankets, towel, etc) and frequent checks?  Have they checked a urine sample?

Is this a neutered male?  IF so that rules out any uterine problems obviously.

                      Thanks everyone.

Chupito is a neutered male. The vet checked the glands and said they were clean and healthy.

The vet said they needed a wet sample to analyze but I can’t get a wet one. It’s little drops so they dry up very quickly. The vet said there was no need to have him stay for observations. They told me not to worry, because they couldn’t find anything. They said bring him back if his appreciate, behaviors, or appearance changes. The droplets are more annoying than anything. I have to keep scrubbing the carpet in his cage. His had this problem for a few months and he appears perfectly happy.

Do you notice that he sits in his box alot? Also, most of the time they should be able to express his bladder and then do a urinalysis. (if it in fact is from his urine)

As far as carpet goes, try a 50/50 white vinegar/water mix. That gets up urine very well.

No, Chupito doesn’t sit in his box.

Thanks for the cleaning tip. Will try it.
