This year I planned ahead and collected some of the long-stem grass in my yard. Talk about getting eaten by mosquitoes — they love to hide in the bushier spots…

I washed the grass (can you bring in bugs into your home with hay??) and then strained it and dried it.

The truth is I was out of hay and the farm that supplies me is going to be a while before haying this year because it’s been so dry.

It must smell very fresh! What type of grass is it. I tried this by picking and drying kikuyu grass but it got snubbed. Be aware the protein levels may be higher than the cured grasses you may buy from feed stores   I have some orchard grass seed….you’ve inspired me to hop to it!

It’s Timothy, but there are some clover and dandelion in it, which makes it richer. I thought with all the bonding stress a little rich food might be okay.
The buns approve. They prefer this hay over eating the fresh grass it’s made from.

Petzy, I just have to say that the rabbit in your picture looks a bit like a model.

                      Very cute.

And I just have to try this for myself. Great idea, Thank you!

Very neat! It looks good even fresh – wonder if they would eat it that way.

They would and do eat it fresh (not wet) but I wonder if dried isn’t better for them. With other animals they say limit fresh grass consumption to avoid colics.

I think fresh would be fine as long as it does not cause problems with your particular rabbit. I have to wonder if perhaps the reason we offer hay is because it’s just easier to preserve and ship and store than fresh grass. I know wild rabbits eat the fresh grass – that’s basically what live on and I know rehabbers usually pick fresh grass from their yard to feed them.

and here I was worrying I was giving too much fresh grass. I guess, though, you have to switch over from hay to fresh gradually. I like to offer both. I think, they like variety best.

Bugsy ate grass as a baby but She & Buddy don’t seem interested in it outside now. I’ll have to try picking some. I know for sure that my yard has not been sprayed with anything.

I actually noticed something simular but with my dog. I often pick dandelion leave for the rabbits and he always wants some. But he never goes after it when they are still in the ground. I think maybe because they aren’t wild rabbits, perhaps she isn’t making the connection. Rabbits are strange creatures and like to keep you guessing.

Perhaps they just like you to do the “hard” work for them…

Thats what I do the grass here is St. Augustine and I put them some dandeloin in it too.

Looks like your bun is quite pleased with it.

The sun cured or dried plant matter gives the bun buns some dietry Vitamin D. There aren’t many foods they can get Vit D from, so yet another reason why hay is so important.

I give Mimzy fresh grass from my yard and dandelions. I tried giving it to Pip and Fiver, but Pip got poopy butt from the dandelions leaves and Fiver won’t touch the grass. He just sniffs it and looks at me like…”Where’s my lettuce?”

Can too much fresh grass give bunnies bloat? Does anyone know?

That’s so cool Petzy! How did you dry it?
My buns like to go out and eat grass, but as they were both dumped for unknown amounts of time they may have eaten some to survive. Actually, now that I think about it that might explain why Hubble ate the grass even when his teeth were bad! Unfortunately I have a gift for killing plants of any sort so I couldn’t grow my own hay for them.

I’m an unintentional plant-killer also. I didn’t grow my timothy. It grows around my house because there is some pasture land close by. So I collect it, daily to do a small batch at a time. I cut it by hand with shears and wash it in a huge rubbermaid tub right away, then strain it through a grid (you could use a bbq grid, oven rack etc.) and spread it out on my deck to dry it. I turn it twice a day. In hot dry weather it is dry after a week. I store it in a shed that is well-ventilated until the fall when mice could infest it. By then it is very well-dried. I store it in my basement in open bags until the nasty cold sets in. Then I move it back into the shed for the winter. I did a little bit last summer but not as organized as this year.
