I feel your pain.  It’s the current thorn in my side too!  I didn’t use to have a problem as my single bun didn’t really eat hay.  Now I have 2 and they both eat it (though I think Jersey just pretends) and I have a mess everywhere.   I’m still trying to find the best solution.

Another options are give him timothy hay cubes instead of loose hay or try a big litter box and hay down one end.  I’m think I’m going to get something big – like a baby bath.  Goodluck!

The best solution I have found for my two buns is a one dollar Walmart CD storage box… I clip it to the xpen and it sits at an angle inside of one of the medium-sized cat litterboxes. If they pull hay out, it settles in the litterbox. They can only reach the hay when they are IN the box, so this eliminates pooping outside of it. It keeps the hay clean and it holds enough for them for about a day and a half… I refill it every evening to be sure they always have it available.

It looks small b/c Max is all scrunched down, but both of my buns can fit in the litterbox at the same time and munch on hay.  The other box is used as well, but not as much as the hay box!

The box is secured at an angle with a loose ziptie and a dogclip around the xpen bar… I can just unclip to fill it up and I don’t have to cut the ziptie (ever…)  Obviously the container is half empty when I took the pic, but I fill it up to the tippy top every evening.
