Yesterday we decided to try to clean up Archie and Gracie’s feet (plus Gracie’s tail since she had poo on her).  We got a large mop bucket, pet shampoo and a towel.  We did it in the bathroom since it was pretty small and they wouldn’t run off.  Archie was first; I got him and had the bucket filled an inch or two with luke warm water.  My husband, Brett, put him in the water and before I got the shampoo on a towel Archie freaked out and jumped out…well we forgot to close the door shut and he ran out behind the couch, wet feet and belly.  Had to pull the couch out and get him into the hall so I could get him.  Second try…we put him in the water again and he jumped out and kicked the bucket over, water spilling everywhere!!    Brett went to get a mop as I watched Archie…he either got so scared or he had to really go because he peed on the wet tile floor!    Blocking the other rooms and leaving him in the hallway, we got the bathroom cleaned up.  Ok THIRD try; we put the bucket in the shower.  I held him, his belly was all wet, poor thing!  I was also getting all wet, pants were soaked; I should have worn my bathing suit!   Got him all cleaned and washed off, towel dried and try to use a blow dryer as much as we could.  He went out to the hall, flicking his feet getting us more wet and went to town cleaning himself.

Ugh!  So he was done and now we had to do Gracie.  She was a lot calmer and was pretty much in a trance when we washed her up.  By this time I smell like wet rabbit, my pants are soaked, my shirt is almost soaked

I remember when I actually gave our first rabbit, Mickey a yearly bath; like full bath, except his head (I know now that you’re not suppose to do that).  He did very well and just sat in the water.

So anyone that plans on washing their rabbits feet or tail off…be warned, you will get wet and the rest of the day they will turn their backs to you

Thanks for the giggle. I’ve had to wash my 2 dwarf lops poopy butts but, they were much more cooperative. I used the bathroom sink.
I have found with animals that aren’t thrilled with baths, such as cats, the easiest way is to get into the bath tub with them wearing jeans & hold them on your lap. they don’t like the slippery tub or their legs dangling in water. They feel much more secure on your lap. The jeans make you non slippery & protect your legs from claws.

Haha you’re welcome Yeah it took us awhile to figure out the right way and easiest way to do it! I ended up holding both of them by my chest while Brett scrubbed their feet. Oh and I forgot to mention that for Gracie I was holding her but hadn’t gotten into the tub (we have a tub/shower) and I didn’t want to try to get in it and trip so I just leaned her over the tub and then we got the shower head and changed the setting and rinsed off her feet….and my pants
I’ll have to try jeans next time! Hopefully we won’t have a next time though

Well now that’s something I never thought of…wearing my jeans to bathe the cat. Hm. My two housecats are not TOO bad with baths, but my Griffy gets kind of panicked int he shower. He doesn’t even like ME going in there and will wail until I come out or try to open the shower curtain and screech at me. Crazy cat.
I hold Fiver and my daughter does the deed with a small bowl of soapy water, one of clean water and some washcloths and paper towels. He doesn’t like it, but as long as I keep giving noserubs, we can get his feet and bum clean pretty well with this technique. I usually give a treat (like an APD cookie) with Rescue Remedy on it to help calm him a few minutes before we begin. It really helps!
Mimzy is NOT bathing friendly at all. I would have a time with him I’m sure.
Pip..meh…all is a day’s work for the beauty queen/blueblood of the household. ^_^ She just loves being held, she doesn’t much care what it is you’re doing…except for nail trims of course. Once you try to get her back in her night pen is where the trouble starts. 0_o I’ve got the scars on my face, arms and chest to prove it.

Hmm.  When I tried to wash the urine off Laith and his poopy butt too  I used the sink.  Laith seemed to know I was trying to clean him up so he didnt’ protest much.   He was a pretty docile little fellow too.  Very smart. I must say.

Ok well,   Putting salve on Cottons lip is sort of like giving your buns a bath.  I got 1 scratch mark per medicine time. I put it 2x a day now.  I have gotten better at it though. At first he would get away from me. Now I hold him close to me sit on the couch bring up my knees set Cotton on my legs put my knees back down with Cotton on them.  Hold Cottons head and pet and soothe him.  Then out comes the salve.  He quit kicking as much.  Until the last 2 days  he would kick and I would have to stop he would try to get a way whew.

I make sure I have a shirt on fully covering my arms and chest to the neck.

I dont’ know which I prefer.   Being soaking wet or full of flying fur and a scratch here n there.  I dont’ get scratched now though.  I learn quick.

Oh wow that was funny! Kind of sounds like one of my ferrets he will fight with everything in him when he hears the bath water come on and I only do it like once a year so not like it’s going to kill him lol

Haven’t had a need to try washing Addie or Benj yet, but did need to plenty of times with Trixie. I guess we had it lucky with her. Most of the time we’d just lay her on her back, cradled in our arms. With one hand on her chest and the other under her bottom, we’d just run her tushie under the water.

We’ve also put her in the tub a couple of times. We’d start with no water, close the drain, put her in the “shallow” end of the tub, and turn the water on just slowly filling the tub a couple inches. She didn’t seem to mind that too much either. The slow water gave her a few minutes to get acclaimated. After that she’d just sit there. It was funny watching her because after the water filled the tub enough to hit her front paws, she’d go in to that cleaning mode where she’d rapidly shake her paws, clean them, put them back down in the water, then start over.

I had to wash Max’s feet the day we adopted him. He was allowed to play outside with his friends and he had brown, muddy feet. My experience wasn’t as entertaining as yours tho! He tolerated it pretty well. It took a few months for his feet to lighten, but now they are pretty, pristine white, and I’ve never had to bathe his feet again. What kind of litter do you use?

I think Archie’s paws are still a bit yellowish but I’m not going to try to bath him anytime soon   He’s a fiesty one.  When we go on car rides and I open the cage to pet him, he’ll sit up and look all around and try to jump out.  He’s a daredevil   I was afraid with Gracie because she has a bit of a nervous bladder   She never peed but when I was holding her, she kept pooping it was pretty funny!  As long as I was holding her, she kept pooping   That sounds like a good idea Mr. Bill!  I might have to try that next time with slowly running the water.

We have a big laundry sink in the basement but it’s off the ground and I was way to scared to try to hold them and hope they didn’t jump out of my arms on the cement.

We use a wood pellet…last one we got (since Tractor Supply switches every so often) was called Nature’s Choice but today we had to buy some more and bought four 40 lb bags of Equine Pine.  I liked that better since the pellets are a bit smaller and I think it smells more like pine because I’ve noticed if I’m on the computer by their litter I can smell their poo and urine more with Nature’s Choice.  I also put shredded paper we get from my father-in-law from his work on top of that because we have the grid in their litter.  And yup we tried to take it out but as soon as we did they tried to dig in it.  The paper really helps with the grid though, you really can’t see it and it helps their feet.

We use Yesterday’s News and also throw some shreaded newspaper over top of it. We get the 30lb bag from the cat section at Petsmart.

@ skibunny… are those pellets from TS safe for just plain litterbox use? I mean without a wire bottom? We have a TS fairly close but I’ve never thought about checking there. I’m alwasy on the lookout for litter that’s more bang-4-the-buck, but I don’t want anything that’d be bad if they chewed on it.

There was a different post (can’t remember what it was under but  it was awhile ago) that a few people said they use the wood pellets.  I actually started using wood stove pellets but since it’s not winter I think they’re harder to fine and equine pine is the next best thing.  I’ve only caught Parsnip chowing down on it and posted about it and people said it was ok as long and she didn’t eat a lot of it and was ok.  A big 40lb bag of equine pine is usually about $6.50 but it was on sale at TS for $5.49 today!  We bought 4 bags of it, so I think we’re set for a bit.    A bag usually lasts us maybe 2 weeks?  I liked Yesterday’s News but it was getting to much for us (esp. with two).

What is it we’re not suppose to use for litter?

I would like to find something cheaper, seeing how we have 2 buns… and fostering a third tomorrow.

Mainly clumping type litters and soft wood shavings such as pine or cedar. The pellet types are considered safe as the processing deals with the toxic substances. You can get pelleted pine and aspen.

                                What this about a 3rd bunny?…

OMG you’re fostering Vincent??!!  When I dropped off Parsnip I saw him, he is absolutely adorable!  I asked to hold him…big mistake, I fell in love with the little guy!  I had Brett hold him and I’m like “can we keep him?!”  You must post pics, he is the cutest bun!  If only we had more room

Yea, I’m picking him up at 10. Haven’t seen any pics of him. We were going to foster Midnight, but I believe he’s now being adopted Saturday.

                                    Parsnip got adopted?

Oh he is very cute, he’s a little tiny lop earred bunny, white and black, almost fits in both your hands.    You might be tempted to keep the little guy hehe!

We dropped Parsnip off last weekend to get spayed.  She got spayed Tuesday and Jen had to take her back to the vet Wednesday because she had pulled out all but one of her staples whille they were at work and now she has a little cone on.  Poor thing, I knew she’d probably try that haha!  We get her back next weekend.
