My mom is so messed up..

I went over to see her the other day to find a kitten in a pet taxi. Turns out she had had her in there 24/7 for 2 weeks, i dont know how often she was being fed. My mom was going to drop her off at a kill shelter and the only thing that stopped her was the fact that she didnt want to pay the $50 fee!!

Apparently the shelter recommended keeping her in a pet taxi.. and posting on craigslist to try to get another owner.. My mom had her in there so much that the cat ended up peeing and pooping in there, and my mom left her in it until the kitten was forced to clean it all up herself.. There was no food or water in there either..

Needless to say I took her to clean her up, give her some damned freedom, and try to litter train her so that I could find her a forever home.

Now here’s the issue. She will not eat or drink. I got her about 10pm last night, and the whole time I’ve had her she’s pooped once, took maybe two licks of milk (I was trying to bribe her with anything I could at that point). SHe hasn’t peed, she hasn’t eaten, I’ve even tried treats..

How do I get her to eat?!!

Oh, I left out that she is 6 months old, if that means anything.

            Your mom did that?

Do you have a syringe?  Maybe you could syringe-feed her some water or pedialyte.  I don’t know much about kittens, but I read that cow’s milk can give them diarrhea.  If you have some tuna can-water maybe she would sip on that a little, but I don’t think the fish would be a good idea.  You could add in some more water to the juice so she would get more fluids.

I imagine she’s probably very traumatized and dehydrated at this point… is there any way you could take her to a vet?

I’m so sorry this happened!  Thank you for rescuing her from that horrible situation!  Please keep us posted on her progress!

I’ve read that pedialyte for infants is okay for cats too. Maybe I should try that?
And yeah, my mom isn’t the best person.. :-/

I’m so sorry. I’m just really glad you were able to step in. Did you say anything to your mom about this?

It might be worth researching to find a no kill shelter in your area. You can bring the kitty there where a vet will be on the premises to check her health and to give her fluids if she needs them immediately. They would care for her and put her up for adoption. I wouldn’t be surprised if she just has a bit of an infection from poor conditions. It was good of you to rescue her.

The kitten is doing MUCH better. I called my step-mom because she works at a vet’s office as an assistant, and she had me get her some baby food and sardines to try to feed her, as well as check the elasticity of her skin and the color of her gums. She said the kitten didn’t seem to be in any kind of dire condition based on what i told her. I got the stuff she said to get and the kitten ate it! And she drank some of the water that the sardines were in, I put that in her water bowl, and she drank that too. I’m so relieved.

Thanks for all the help and caring.

I’m so glad that she is okay! In the future there is something called Nutri-Cal or Nutri-Stat that is similar to Critical Care. I had to use it for my puppy when she was little because she would become hypoglycemic due to her size and high energy level. It basically just ads some sugar and helps stimulate the appetite. I think it’s $7-8 at your local petstore. It is a gel like paste and the animal will often lick it from your finger, if not then I typically just rub it on the roof of the mouth (watch the teeth!). Also, I think milk is culturally depicted the same for cats as carrots are for rabbits. Sure, they may love them but they aren’t really good for them. Tuna or fish in general is a much better idea! I hope you find her a good home! I know it can be so hard to do with cats. Are you going to spay her before you rehome her?

I’m so glad to see kitty is doing better. You have done a terrific job!
I was afraid upon reading the first few posts that the kitten was having kidney problems, but if she’s been seen by the vet and they find her in good shape, then that’s a relief!
Thank you so much for rescuing her! I hope she can be found a good home. I’ve always loved cats and they are tops on my list for companions (the bunnies are doing their level best to push them off that position though.) ^_^ Right now it’s an even tie!
If you decide to take a photo of her, I’d love to see it.

Oh my gosh! I’m so happy to hear the kitten is doing a little bit better. I agree that taking her to a shelter may be a good course of action so she can get some vet attention and they’ll hopefully be able to place her in a home.
