We have 2 bunnies. male- spayed and female. they are both 4 months old. We recently put a litter box in their cage (shared cage) they seem to prefer to lay in it as opposed to using it……

We have  the food one corner, water at the other and are thinking we need to entice them from dropping in the other corner by adding a bedding of some sorts.

I took urine and droppings and placed them in the litter box. The litter box does have a cage like shelf in it too.. i thought maybe i should remove this untl they get the hint.

        Any ideas??????

Hmmm   Well put a bunch of hay in their litterbox in a corner there.  Rabbits do like to sleep in the litterboxes sometimes.  Are they peeing on the towel thingy in the corner instead of the litterbox.

Can you put another litterbox in there.  Putting it in the corner they are using.

          Any one else?  Ideas?

I am new to this site, as well as bunnies. I did search around and have a couple of ideas now…

1- i did not put new hay in the litter box, but the litter box is where they were going in the past. I also did not leave a urine soaked paper towel in there, i just kinda wiped the box with their urine.

2- i did not actually set up a bed for them- would a cloth be ok??????

3- I see where most people did not place hay around the cage, rather kept it contained. i suppose that would be a good idea as well… is a cardboard box ok for this?? wont they eat it???

4- I think this site is amazing….. i am still reading. Lots of tips. My daughter (11yrs) is their primary handler/keeper. She is doing a great job. This weekend we are going to attempt nail clipping.

I use a cardboard box for hay. It’s a shoebox so it’s pretty small but holds plenty of hay for her. Since it’s small she can put it shere she likes to keep it and it alsmo makes a great chewy and toy. She’s chewed a fair amount of the edges but I’m guessing this box will last her 4-6 months before I need to replace it. The best part is, when she needs a new hay box I get an ecuse to go shoe shopping!

So last night we cleaned the cage. I took the dropping/urine on paper towel and added it to what was originally in the litterbox. There was some soiled hay with it too.

The box has a cage cover which i kept on. this keeps the bunnie from standing it in I guess. I then added just a small amount of fresh hay. We through in a ‘blanket’ which they immediately started rubbing on.

Woke up this am to find that they are still sleeping in the box and doing their duty in the cage.

Should i take out the soiled hay from the box and leave the cage cover off???

Do you have enough room to add a second box? With the existing box, perhaps removed the soiled hay and cage cover (grate?) and pop the blanket which they scented in there so they can have it as there sleeping spot. Then put the soiled hay, poop etc in another litter box. Perhaps one with fairly low sides to start off with.
