› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Another Bunny… *Now with pictures*
So I was looking at the petsmart to get petfood and… there was a beautiful gray bunny that was neutered. Before you say NO PETSTORES the pet store sells the rabbits from lollypop (a shelter).
I have been thinking about another bunny for a while…. My mom does not say no because she saw that I take good care of Fern.
So.. refresh me of the pros and cons of getting another bunny, the only thing my mom is worried about is the extra cost, what are the extra costs of getting a second?
I just saw that bunny and he was perfect, I even petted him and he was nice, I would have to introduce him and Fern before getting him of course. Our shelter is small so most of the bunies there are females and I know a female plus a female is harder to bond, and I did want a male to see the difference between the two. He is only a year old and was given up due to the owners allergies.
So… what do you think??? I can’t seem to get him out of my mind!
Ok – so I’m not going to be overly helpful here….just want to say “YAY!!!”
Well just double the cost of the one you have already and that will be about it on having 2. With mine a 10 lb bag of food lasts over a month.
Awe send pics I hope it works out. It is so exciting getting another bunny.
Since in another post you said that you would be off to college in a couple of years, and you were worried about what to do about your bunny: The options being so far being that your mom would take care of him or you could get an apartment.
I guess there are several things to factor in besides the costs of course. On one hand if you are going to be living away at college/campus apartment for a few years, then it would really be up to your mom if she wants to take care of two and spend the money on two, because you will be very busy.
Also, if you try to get an apartment – it will can be hard enough to sell them on ONE bunny, especially when you are young. No matter how responsible you really are, renting an apartment when you are young can be challenging because the landlord knows you are not going to be there for that long, and then add petssss (plural) into the mix, that can make getting a lease even more difficult. I would actually start looking at apartments now JUST to see what their rules are and how strict they are. That way, you know what you are dealing with for the future.
On the other other hand, if you do have to leave your bunny with your mom and you think your bunny may get less attention, but your mom is up for taking on the care of both of them, then they can keep each other company.
Hard decisions!
BB brings up a great point. I think this is something that your mom will have to be on board with also. The biggest “pro” to having two is that they have each other for company… It’s been said that two are less destructive b/c they can entertain each other (of course, this in not always the case.) When you’re already buying food, litter, greens and hay for one, it may not be too much of a jump to buying these items for two. The biggest thing would be vet care. He’s already neutered (YAY!) so that is taken care of, but just like with Fern, you’ll need some kind of emergency fund.
Back to the college thing (and I have not read your other thread yet), I think it’s great that your mom is willing to care for Fern for you. And you still have a couple years to prepare for this. You might want to consider moving Fern (and her buddy, if that happens) to a “family location” like the living room, den, family room… Your whole family will be able to interact with the bunny(ies) and there will be fewer changes when college rolls around. It will also be important that your mom is aware of the health aspect of bunny care. You know what constitutes an emergency and you’re very knowledgeable about bunnies, but that won’t do any good if you’re away. She will need to know when to act and why it’s vital that emergency situations are treated as such.
Yes, thank you all.
I think an emergency fund is a good idea! Do you think putting 20 dollars in there a month would be good enough? I get an allowance monthly (I don’t have a cell phone so I get an allowance, yay, who needs a cell phone anyway?)
I think I will convince my mom to take me back there so I can see how Fern fares with him. I will bring a long sleeved t shirt and gloves just in case.
I am so excited I really have been looking at getting another bun for a while. IF i get him I will be sure to post pics (that’s a big IF).
20 dollars a month is good! Remember… it’s a “just in case” fund… so even if it does not cover the entire emergency bill should a situation arise, it should help take the burden off a little bit… I’m very excited for you. Let us know how everything goes! ;o)
Ok so I called the people and lolly pop does not allow bunny dating…. What do you think the chances of a spayed female and a neutered male getting along fine? They said they do not allow refunds if it does not work out and I really can’t keep him if it doesn’t. Soooo do you think I should give it a try?
I would not if you can not do any bunny dating and even if there was, that is not a guarantee so if you cannot keep him if it doesn’t I would not take a chance.
Hmmm…. I am still not sure, I understand there is a risk, but I did hear somewhere that any bunny can get along with another it just may be hard in some situations. I am not disregarding your warning Sarita, I am just thinking of Maryann (is that her name) bonding. It was a nightmare but it worked didn’t it?
Fern and the other bunny do not seem so uppity and I am kinda really wanting to get that bunny. Fern would probably really appreciate a friend.
I might just might take that chance, the adoption fee is only 40 dollars its not like it would cost my life savings. And odds are I could make it work. Summer vacation is coming and I will have a lot of time to bond them. I kind of want to convince the people to let our bunnies meet but I don’t want to be rude or annoying.
Oh some more things that factor into the mush is do you think a shelter rabbit could carry any disease? Also how bad can wounds be from bonding? Can they be fatal? Ive heard that you should keep them away from each other for two weeks prior to bonding to ensure that one is not diseased.
Reputable rescues vet-check their animals before adoption. You should ask them what exactly that entails. Is there a reason they do not allow bunny-dating, is it a firm policy, or are they not aware of the benefits? Bonding wounds can be very bad, the sessions will require your undivided attention. I bonded a male to a female and I did not do dating. I wouldn’t recommend it. I lucked out with my two and they bonded in only 3 weeks. But believe me, when we started out, they were bad. At a certain point I was almost convinced they’d never bond. With a lot of time and patience, you *should* be able to bond any two buns, theoretically, but it can possibly take months from start to finish. A lot of people throw in the towel before that. How long are you willing to keep them separately for?
To tell you the truth I am getting him, they did not allow meetings because they were afraid that your bunny might have a disease. I will have lots and lots of time over the summer to bond them, to be precise I have 2 months and a bit.
I went back to see him and he was so sweet and cute that I couldn’t resist, I booked him. I asked the lady and she said he had a clean bill of health when he was last checked up on. He was actually only neutered on Friday so I have to give him (2 weeks??) to recuperate even though he was looking fine. I have to get his stitches removed on Friday but it will be free (cause of the free check up thing you get with adopting a bunny).
Despite you guys warnings I am getting him (sorry, bad me *slap*) I am going to litter train him in Fern’s small commercial cage and eventually move him to a pen.
Wish me luck! But remember I am saving 2 bunnies!
I am excited for you. I know it’s very hard not to go for it once you get your heart set on something. When do we get to see pics?! You have to wait two weeks to bring him home? I hope everything works out well with him! Are you going to be able to keep him separately then until they bond?
Ooh yay a new bunny! I hope things go well with him and Fern! Cant wait for pictures!
No, no I have to keep him separate from Fern for two weeks because he was just neutered.
Yup he is home (my dad does not know yet hehe) I will post pics when he finds out because he is the only one that knows how to upload pics, also since he is a dwarf (or a dwarf mix) do you think if he had malocclusion the vets at the shelter would have discovered that he did? (I am just a worried mom thinking of all that could go wrong).
Yes he will be able to be separate from fern until they are bonded.
He is so cute and I can’t wait to show you him!
Now for a name…. any suggestions?
We thought of willow but then my mom started calling him willy and… willy is not really an appropriate name (I would probably start calling him that too in time)
Sooo what do you think?
Also what do you think of the name Tansy? or Cinder (he is grey)
Congratulations! I wasn’t able to do bunny dating here either and took a chance. You seem a committed type person who’ll manage this. Best of luck with the bonding when you start. I think it’s fortunate you have to wait 2 weeks. It will give each bunny a chance to become accustomed to the other near by.
I like Cinder (because I had daydream last evening of calling a grey bunny Cinda…bizarre!).
Yea his name is officially Cinder now! I did the stunt double thing (put Fern’s hair on a stuffed toy) he was very interested in it and was sniffing it (I’m not sure what that means)
I have yet to introduce his smell to Fern, I wonder how that will go. So far he is doing well, is there anything special I have to look for after a neuter (since he just had his)
Hmm anything else I can do to introduce the idea of another bunny to each other?
You can pet one, right down to the skin, then pet the other, transferring the scent. Can they see one another? When I feed mine pre-bonding, I did it so that they faced each other thru the pen because I read that eating was a social activity for rabbits. I really love grey rabbits – hence my daydreaming. Hope telling your Dad about the newbie goes well…..just so we can see pictures sooner – lol.
Well at the moment they are in separate rooms so they can’t see each other. I have to wait till Mr. Cinder is litter trained to put him in a pen next to Fern (well actually I will have to split Fern’s pen because it takes up the whole room).
I also have a question is it normal for a rabbit to have small poop after a neuter?
He is doing great and inhaled the lettuce I gave him. I can’t wait till I can put him in a pen (The cage he is in now is way too small, but until he is litter trained then that’s all he gets)
I am not sure if he or Fern is bigger, I think they are about the same size but Fern looks bigger because of all her fluff.
Pictures will likely be up this evening, My dad found out and he just laughed. Now I just have to wait till he gets home for him to upload the pictures.
I can’t wait till the first introduction between him and Fern!
Hi guys I am back and now with Pictures!
I was wondering what type of bunny he is, do you think you could help me out with that?
Enjoy!
Gosh, he is a beautiful bunny if I might say so myself.
Yea as I said, his cage is kind of small….
Wait did I ever post Pictures of Fern’s box condo? I don’t recall… Oh well here they are while I am posting I might as well post pictures of it too.
I have some pics of my room modified (without fish tank).
And I have one of the grate over Fern’s litter box from a while ago (if anyone was wondering what it looked like).
Those a some cute critters. Awesome bunny room sset up.
Moonlight, he is beautiful! *sigh* I just love that colouring. I thought he was going to be a lop because I read lollypop at the start og your thread and got “lop” into my head! How old is he? His cage doesn’t look too bad given his size. His colouring reminds me of Lightchicks Robbie. He might be a grey agouti (chincilla agouti?) colouring – you can see the fawn under the grey. Does he have different colours all along the hair shaft? No idea about breed….
Edit to add: Thanks for posting all the pics. I’ve been collecting boxes to do something similar to Ferns box condo – now I have more of a clue how to go about it! Only thing is I know it’ll get peed on
Hey Moonlight, what rabbit is that? Did they call him Squirrel?
I posted this pic of Squirrel last week or so:
I meet all the Lollypop Bunnies and thought the squirrely one was so cute and sweet! They get the best rabbits in there… I want them all =(
Look at this lovely bun I missed out on from lollypop, just because I was tons more indecisive than you are =/
So props to you on actually going with your gut! This was more than a month ago and I’m still upset about missing out =(
Thanks guys, no his name was not Squirrel it was Purdo.
He is about a year old and the reason for him being in lollypop was because of allergies.
Don’t worry sibly, I was indecisive but I was so worried that someone would buy him that I zoomed back there the next day and got him. I kept thinking of all that could go wrong and making myself worried but I am very glad I pushed my worries away and got him.
The only thing I am worried about now is malocclusion because I heard that dwarf bunnies get it sometimes (although I am really not sure what he is). Do you think the shelter vet would have noted that he had malocclusion if he did?
His first vet appointment is on Saturday, he will get his stitches out and get a checkup, do you know if the free appointment slip you get when you adopt a bunny will cover the stitch removal?
By the way, the litter training isn’t going so hot, I might need a couple more tips on litter training.
Thanks!
P.S. Its too bad that his eyes always came out red in the pictures, he actually has beautiful eyes, they are kind of grey and black.
Ok Ok now I have just put the barrier across Fern’s room (she was not happy with the less space) and I am about to put Cinder’s cage in there so they can get used to each others presence (even if Cinder is not allowed in the pen at all times since he is not litter trained).
Do you think its a good or bad Idea that I put two litter boxes in Cinder’s cage, he sleeps/grooms/sits in one and he peed in the other once but he also peed in the rest of the cage so….
Ohhh Purdo. I didn’t meet Purdo. I’m sure the vet slip will cover stitch removal. It seems ridiculous that it wouldn’t… it’s not an expensive thing and it’s very necessary =) Their vet would have noticed a malocclusion if it was present… just ask when you get the stitches removed to be sure, since Lollypop does see a lot of animals.
Yes I will ask that, and I have another question about having 2 bunnies, do people with two bunnies have a litter box big enough to fit both bunnies in or do you have 2 litter boxes or do you just have one normal sized one. I was wondering if I should buy a bigger litter box when they are bonded or if I should keep the litter box Fern has now.
Congrats on the new bunny! As for the litter box issue – I have one box that’s big enough for both of my bunnies now that they’re bonded. That way they both fit in it and can eat at the same time (my setup is such that they have to be IN the box to eat their hay to promote their litter habits). You could also probably choose to have 2 smaller boxes, but I didn’t want to mess with cleaning two different boxes. But I’d suggest you for sure have options so that they don’t have to fight over one small box or there might be more accidents outside the box. Good luck!
I have another question, how long after a neuter does it take for a bunny’s hormones to die down. I have a feeling he might be marking because of hormones.
P.S. Right now my room smells of pee and vinigar, eww.
Ugh my room always smelled of vinegar with my rabbit… because I put it on the bars to stop him from chewing… it’ll take at least a few weeks for him to hormonally adjust.
What a cute little bunny! I really hope that the bonding goes well And I like that box condo a lot!
He is probably marking excessively right now just because of all the different smells in your house, so its hard to tell right now whether it is a litter training issue or a territorial marking issue. I see that he had that little corner box, so getting him another one is probably a good idea because sometimes they like to hang out in their litterbox. It also helped me a lot to put hay in my bunny’s litterboxes. For some reason that helped encourage them to poop in there, I guess because it was so convenient!
Yea the litter box was a little small (it was what we had in the basement) now he has a bigger one.
He still keeps peeing out of it and in it. I think it is because I am trying to teach him that hay has nothing to do with pee and I put the hay box away from his litter box (I am doing this because Fern does not associate hay with the bathroom and she has a separate hay box she likes to jump in and munch on. She never pees or poos in it and I want to train him so he will not either, I hope its possible.)
As far as one or two boxes for two bunnies it really is up to them – if they are big sharers or not. Jack can sometimes be bossy with his box. He’ll share on occasion, but I have two just because he’s moody about his box.
Also, note that if you are just seeing territorial poops, not the piles or the pee, that will be normal marking while he gets adjusted. You may even find Fern doing territorial marking until they are bonded.
Oh, and yes, it is normal for poops to be smaller after surgery.
Keep us updated! oh, and CONGRATS!!!
Yesterday I let Mr. Bunny (I think his name is now changed to Thistle, But it might change again) out of his cage into his pen area and he was Crazy about Fern! Pacing back and forth (I think it is hormonal).
And then I went and said hi to Fern in her section and then went back to say hi to him. Well I apparently smelt like a Female bunny because he started humping my knees when I went back to his cage. He would sniff and rub my knee and then hump it!!
I tried to get him to stop by clapping and saying no but it only worked sometimes. It was actually really funny, he would circle me a couple times and then would try to hump one of my knees (I was sitting cross legged). When he humped my leg he would start licking it then nibble it and seeing as I have no fur to protect from the nibbling it hurt, not a lot but I would screech to let him know (my mom probably thought I was dying).
Also if he did not get off my knee when I clapped and if he managed to hump my leg for a while then my leg would end up a little wet *eww*. Now I don’t know if it was pee or sperm or what have you, my theory was that he still has a little sperm even after he was neutered (I am sure that he is neutered because I got papers saying he was).
After a while of trying to train him not to hump I shooed him back into his cage. He was not happy about this and I heard a couple bangs when I went downstairs. Well apparently while I was gone he either broke one of his nails or the quick somehow got cut open.
There was blood on his litter box and some on his cage floor and some on the bars of his cage that he always puts his paws up on to be let out. It was not a lot of blood but I almost had a heart attack because I thought it was from his neuter wound. Luckily it was only a bleeding nail.
Now my question is should I do something about it? It really was not that serious and I am going to the vet on Saturday anyway and I could have a vet look at it then. It does not seem to bother him at all, he just cleaned it a bit more than normal.
P.S. I would have tried to clean it but he does not like having his paws touched (I have to get him used to it bit by bit) but he seemed to have the cleaning part covered and it seemed to have stopped bleeding now.
