         Hi friends!

I seem to recall, back on one of my earlier questions regarding behavior and nibbling and things like that, someone mentioned that using a squirt bottle of water is a good way to deter bunnies from doing inappropriate behaviors.

        Is this true?

If so, where do I aim the water? Should squirting him on the back be sufficient?

        Thanks so much,

        Alexa

Well it can work because it diverts them from the digging to grooming themselves with the water. It’s worth trying it. Just squirt them anywhere because it’s water and it won’t hurt them.

But if it starts making her angry then it’s not a technique that will work.

I agree with Sarita, if the squirt bottle makes your bun angry or scared, I wouldn’t use it.

I usually start with just clapping and saying no. If that doesn’t work, I get closer, get louder, and will nudge Otto away from whatever he’s chewing. He’s actually very good and I rarely have to go the squirt bottle, but this is the point I use it. Honestly, he doesn’t seem to mind it that much, but I use it infrequently enough that it still gets a “what the heck?!” reaction and he stops what he’s doing.

I also find it helpful to cover up whatever he’s digging or chewing at. When he was digging in the corner of the room, I just put a grass mat down and let him dig at that for a while. And I find having tons of cardboard (a maze haven, boxes, etc) around helps because he much prefers to chew and dig on those than on my baseboards.

Some squirt bottles have a nozzle that you can twist for more of a misty spray than a stream of water. It’s more gentle and wider, so it’s startling but not as intense.

I guess I should have been more clear: it’s not just chewing and digging.
                Reese humps. A lot.
                I’ve posted about it before.
He’s getting fixed soon, but in the meantime, it’s uncontrollable to the point that I can’t even let him out of his cage without being able to store my legs somewhere safe.
I’ve tried stuffed animals, I’ve tried nudging. I’ve tried clapping. I’ve tried snapping. I’ve tried yelling.
                Nothing….works.
So…maybe a gentle spray of water.
                We’ll see…

If he’s humping you, you can wear long pants so your ankles don’t show (cover your feet if you can stand it).

Also, try a little bit of white vinegar. Maybe dampen a cloth or paper towel and rub it on. Not a lot, but the smell is repellent to bunnies.
